Reduction in Kill on Sight mentality

  • It's been two weeks since someone has even chased me in game. I'm feeling like a corner has been turned. Ove this past weekend the only thing close to a battle I had was when some guy rode off with my ship. It appears he checked it for loot then sailed it back to the island I was on. At this point most people I see, wave, dance, play music as we sail by each other. Twice over the weekend I was at an outpost with multiple ships and everyone was nice and friendly. One more tip. If you can by some ship paint. It's easier to spot the people that are having fun if you see them out and they are being nice and you can tell them apart from others by their ship appearance.

I'm starting to enjoy the game more now. What are other people's thoughts right now on how the population is behaving?

  • That's good. Lots of unsuspecting victims. Might be time to saddle up once more.

  • My crew are humble folk, we only sink ships that are in the same sea as us.

LOL I still keep my spyglass out and don't trust until I see that they are trust worthy. So I'll be still be suspecting. So far in the past month I've lost a total of one chest to PvP. So you won't get loot from me.

  • I've noticed this and mentioned in another thread. It's been a while since we've been attacked or chased. I kind a like it but then again I miss the smell of danger on the horizon heh.

Well, I'll just have to wave, and dance, and act jolly for bit before blasting people in the face I guess.

  • @Zeffin I still have confrontations from time to time. For me, if I have any loot aboard and spot someone far off I am likely to stay away. If however someone sets sail directly for me, I typically prepare to attack. I feel like in a pirate game, to play "peacefully" you must give space. If someone wants to invade my area of piracy...I mean privacy.....they have become too aggressive for my taste.

  • I agree - there does seem to be a general calming of the seas, but I've still had a good share of purposeful action. I think there are maybe just fewer bloodthirsty players and therefore fewer itchy trigger fingers.

Just before logging off the other day I sat my pirate down at a campfire at the outpost and went to make a drink. When I came back a crew had spawned and were looking at me with suspicion, guns drawn, so I quickly used a non-threatening text emote and before long we were all dancing and drinking, before they headed off on their voyage and I logged off. But a couple of weeks ago I would have been dead before I got back to my Xbox and never even known what had happened...

  • @xxxrookxxx

If someone starts sailing towards me I assume they want a fight. I will sail away and try to avoid them. If I have loot aboard I will avoid all ships. If I don't have loot I will be friendly if someone is close by. If they attack I will immediately scuttle, and then try to board them and take out as many as I can.

    Zeffin

  • we usually mind our own business, unless you cross path, pass nearby or are at the island we need to go to aswell. ofc if you attack us we will sink your ship and kill you.

Don't scuttle right away! Put up a fight! I sail directly into the wind, jump off my ship and grab their ladder. I have taken down at least 5 Galleons solo now by climbing their crows nest right after boarding and jumping down with a barrel and running below. Once they are down there with me, I kiss my butt goodbye and take out myself, all of them, and add new "speed holes" to their ship to make it faster....at sinking....

    Arggg!

  • Just before logging out last night I sailed over to Wanderers Refuge to see what the sloop was doing. I approached slowly, pulled up alongside and hopped on board to say hello. There was no one there so I turned out all their deck lights (I'm an eco pirate) and left them my spare chicken coops.

At this point the pair of them returned to their ship, one carrying a chest and the other holding a gunpowder keg. The kegger dropped his powder and immediately shot it in some strange demonstration of his suicide ability. The chest carrier started swimming to his boat so I got back on my sloop and dropped a bit of sail. He then chased me for 5 minutes firing about a dozen cannon shots in my general direction.

Strange behavior as I could of sunk or ran their ship aground but chose not too. And they repay me by throwing their balls all over the place! So there are still some shoot on sight mentalists out there.

Nice story. I actually pulled into an outpost with another ship in it. I waved and danced and I got no response. So I jump on his ship and waved and dance. No response. I figured he was AFK. So I did a few runs with bananas and wood planks and loaded up his stores before I sailed off. To bad I could not leave him a note.

It's not me. I don't like PvP. Happy that you like that part. As Austin Powers would say It's not my bag baby! Honestly it's not mine!

  • I have applied how I act in real life in the game. If you fire on me I fire on you. If you are trying to board my boat or acting strange you die. Some people are really good people in this game but most are trolls.

  • @kungfustu72
Eco pirate...just when i think i have seen it all. Lol

  • @kungfustu72 sounds like they are just learning the game and you startled them so their instinct was to kill not be friends.

  • I know I certainly pick my battles more appropriately lately. It's just not fun beating a solo into the ground and stealing his loot, and even duos we tend to try to play with a little more. Things like holding them hostage and demanding the high value loot they have, offering the rest of their chests back for the captains. No sense in driving some solo to quit for a seafarers chest or two. Galleons, on the other hand... especially if they have that pirate legend cosmetic set...

Of course, sometimes we just have to fight somebody, because ship combat is fun. But we definitely pick our battles, and how we approach them, a little differently just for the sake of better emergent gameplay.

You should really try sticking around to see how it plays out sometimes. I get so bummed when we chase a ship, realize it's a solo then they scuttle, because we usually plan on giving them whatever cheap chests we have. Sometimes we'll kill the solo before realizing he's alone, patch him up and... scuttle.

I'm sure these are rare situations, but it always bums me out.

  • I've fallen in love with this game, don't care about rep (high 20's) just screwing around with friend, doing forts, and destroying other crews. I can't wait for hungering deep

  • That's good to hear. Though, if too many active PvP-ers leave we might need incentives to PvP and raid ships for their loot.

Haha I have not been chased one time in this game, where the pursuing boat didn't want me dead. I don't think I will ever wait to see why a pirate ship is chasing me!

I mean, if they're going to catch you anyway, may as well see how it plays out, is my point. If they're going to sink you, well.... that'll be obvious. But scuttling immediately removes any chance for anything else to happen, really.

  • @xxxrookxxx If you have never been chase I question if you have played this game enough to even comment about it.

I'm similar. I'm 24/25/23 right now. Working on getting them all to 25, slowly but surely. Just enjoying the journey.

  • @zeffin Dude you have amazing luck. Ive tried to approach people peacefully multiple times, cannons raised, a text chat message saying i mean no harm but every time they attack on sight. I've been wanting to see more interactions like you're having. I miss when that used to happen back in the alpha and beta, and I have not seen that kind of behaviour at all since launch.

  • I wouldn't say I kill on sight but I usually kill ships/pirates that get too close. I've been burned before trying to be friendly. (My fault I know.) So I don't take chances anymore.

  • @doubledragun said in Reduction in Kill on Sight mentality:

@xxxrookxxx If you have never been chase I question if you have played this game enough to even comment about it.

I think you misread something somewhere, or else I didn't explain properly. Easy on picking a fight there @Doubledragun

@DrunkPunk138 I totally agree about scuttling. I have never scuttled, a good pirate goes down with their ship fighting. I will say not from chase, but at an outpost I was walking back to my ship to get another chest to turn in and there was a galleon aiming directly at me side by side with my ship and they were tossing cast away chests onto my boat! Thought that was pretty cool! I also ran into one at a ship wreck and posted about it somewhere on these forums, and it was a fun and refreshing interaction.

  • @xxxrookxxx you were boasting that you have never been chased. So I decided you have never completed a skull fort with a galleon or sloop coming to take it from you which is rare if you play the game a good bit.

  • @xxxrookxxx said in

Haha I have not been chased one time in this game (removed comma) where the pursuing boat didn't want me dead.

    @Doubledragun
I deleted the comma in my compound sentence for you.

  • @xxxrookxxx ah now its making more sense. My sincere apologies.

  • Wish I could say the same. Lately I've been getting attacked pretty much every time I come across another ship. Several of those have been griefers too that just love to wait for me to respawn so they can kill me again.

  • See Rook everyone misread it l**o ^

  • Though I can't change the minds of the 3 others I sometimes roll with, I usually say to leave sloops alone when on a galleon.

I've also started just Clap emoting when people pull up and sink my sloop with nothing but chicken and snake cages. I mean, you people could at least go take all my supplies before sinking it.

  • You know I've noticed this more, lately. I'll be honest though, if I know I can profit off a player a lot, I'll go after them.

    • I don't random kill
    • I don't kill merchants
    • I don't camp on islands (But I will chase them onto an island if I was previously chasing them beforehand.)

I'll either sneak on board, or recklessly get on board and quickly look around. If all checks out and they have loot worth 1000+ that isn't only animals, I'll hunt them down.

People say it's a Pirate game and killing on sight shouldn't be looked down upon but even Pirates had some sort of code during their golden age. Those who did kill just for the joy of it were considered Monsters.
