Sea of Thieves | Magic & Mysticism

  • Ahoy, mateys!

The world of Sea of Thieves is fantastical and mystifying with legendary Sea Monsters lurking in the depths of the ocean, and the vengeful Undead, past pirates of fame and fortune guarding their treasure. Magic has a great presence in Sea of Thieves, and the Order of Souls seem to have the greatest connection and understanding of it. If they're able to use this magic themselves, why not the players?

My suggestion would be to give players magically enchanted items they would use to assist them in their exploration and even in combat. Making them a pre-stocked, permanent item instead of a purchasable consumable would be a great way to keep players equal on the playing field. Here are a few item suggestions and possible magical properties I though of, as well as some enemy AI ideas.

    Permanent Items

    Skull Pendant

An enchanted necklace or charm that allows the user to temporarily repel the Undead (Skeletons), whether it be single cast or channeled.

    Ring of Phantasms

An enchanted ring that allows the user to summon phantom copies of themselves to distract the enemy. These phantom copies would deal no damage, and be mainly used against enemy AI. Perfect for countering those firearm wielding Skeletons.

    Witch's Vial

A potion which once consumed would fully heal the user as well as increase their base health for a short duration, but would keep the user from eating Bananas (healing foods) for an extended period of time.

Skull Flare: Placeholder name, but its use would be that of a modern flare gun. The user fires a projectile into the air which bursts into a very pirate-y skull of a variety of colors depending on the intent of the signal. Red for enemy players or AI, yellow for loot, green to retreat, etc. Might not even be some magical thing, but a regular tool.

    Legendary Items

Tome of the Undying: A book of spells and incantations with an ethereal glow which whispers to the wielder seductive temptations. Upon use, the book would light ablaze with a blue-green flame as it withers away, and those whispers would turn to screams as a harsh voice commands a horde of Phantom Skeletons to rise and fight for you. The Tome of the Undying can be sold to an Order of Souls vendor.

Voice of Zeus: A horn decorated with gold and silver which upon use the horn would shatter into a thousand pieces, and the skies would darken as a thunderous storm gathered to smite your enemies with divine lightning. The Voice of Zeus can be sold to a Gold Hoarder vendor.

Trident of Poseidon: (read @RattlyFob 's post below, a far better idea) An ancient artifact humming with divine properties that points the wielder to untold treasure, and as it nears its truest point of direction the pitch of the hum increases. When the player reaches their destination the Trident will glow brilliantly. Players will dive deep below to find a strange monument guarded by sharks and Merpeople. Upon defeating the enemies, you'd insert the Trident into the monument, and the earth will shake revealing a trove of treasure worth more than the Trident itself. The Trident of Poseidon can be sold to a Gold Hoarder vendor.

Necronomicon: An ancient book with an indecipherable language and mysterious symbols riddled about on every other page. Once used, the book would lift itself into the sky by an unknown force, and a cosmic portal would appear, shadowy and deep like an endless void, and from it a horrifying, monstrous beast would enter into the world. Its roar would shake the earth and the skies would part revealing the infinite space. This would be a Legendary boss you'd slay, and upon its defeat you'd receive an item far more valuable than the Necronomicon itself which can be sold to an Order Of Souls vendor for a godly amount of gold. The Necronomicon can be sold to an Order of Souls vendor.

    Enemy AI

Captain Ravenheart: An enigma whom players may encounter at night during their explorations with an increased chance to spawn the more players you slay or ships you sink. This Legendary Boss will have unique mechanics like teleporting a short distance, summoning Withering Wisps, and switching between ranged and close combat.

Leviathan: A new Sea Monster which traps ships in a maelstrom until defeated. Thank you @NicolasNaatz for the idea.

Undead Animals: Think a flock of skeletal seagulls that awaken with Skeletons or a skeletal shark.

Withering Wisp: A phantom skull which explodes when within proximity of a player dealing a small amount of damage as well as damage over time.

There would have to be rules and limitations for them. I'd suggest enchanted items have a limited use, and depending on the effect, would be single use or multiple. Where ammunition can be gathered from Ammo Boxes to reload your firearms, enchanted items would have a usage bar that can be recharged by visiting an Order of Souls vendor.

Thanks to @nenikakamen for giving me the thought. Just a few items I could think of to introduce usable magic while keeping it balanced and grounded. I'll be updating this list often.

What do you think? Let's discuss!

  • I like the idea of artifacts/relics you can find and have posted about them a few times.
My thinking is that for a system like this to work it needs:

    • Equal opportunity - everyone can find these things just lying around like any other treasure
    • Despawning - lose relics like any other loot when your crew is done for the day
    • Consumables - no permanent power for a crew, even within just one session
    • Valuable - in addition to being consumable, be able to vendor the artifacts for a hefty fee/rep bonus; creates some player agency in whether to use the power for PvP orreap rewards of selling it to a faction (also gives you something to do with them if you make it to the end of a session without using them)
  • I like the thought you have put into this, I'm not sure this rpg style of magic would work particularly well in this world but your definitely onto something with the idea of enchanted items.
    I thought of something similar.

A cursed treasure worth A LOT of gold that weakens the crew and changes the skin of the ship and anyone close to it to a ghostly aesthetic would work.

  • @sanssariph

Absolutely brilliant. Yes! One-time use artifacts and relics that can be found within the world or as an item-drop from certain bosses sounds amazing to me. I'd honestly be happy with any magic as the Order of Souls is my favorite faction, and I'd like to be spooky as well.

  • Oh, it's so cool if we could use magical items! This is actually pretty genius. :p Not sure what I think about the things you said though, but I love the suggestion! It at least sounds super fun. :)
Now I really hope that Rare will give us a little magic to use!

In my original thread a couple weeks ago I had some ideas like Skeleton Captains having a small chance to drop cursed/enchanted skulls - they'd sell for more than Villainous Skulls and give you a one-time use ability (like changing wind direction, AoE damage, summoning sharks or skeletons, etc) that "drains" the magic out of the skull and just turns it into a Foul Skull. My thinking was that the higher level skulls have these really cool runes and auras - what do they mean? What if for powerful enough skulls we could harness that power ourselves?

You could do similar stuff for Gold Hoarders - magic compass, enchanted goblet, etc. Once you use its power it breaks or loses its magic and sells for a lot less.

  • @sanssariph

    Fantastic ideas!

    @YaCantDutchThis

Yeah, I'm not sure about much of any of it either. Haha! Especially the Necronomicon text, or the Tome of the Undying. But I could just imagine that when you have it as your selected item it has this sort of ethereal glow with haunting whispers from the Underworld (similar to holding a Skull), and upon use the whispers become screams or a commanding voice as the tome lights ablaze in a fantastic blue-green flame and withers away! Agh!

That sounds super amazing though... I do agree with this one now! :p

I do want to say that I didn't mean that I don't like your ideas. Just not sure what to think of them. Mainly, not sure if they'd work in this game or if they'd be easily abusable. Like, people stacking up on a certain item. Which means that you shouldn't be able to have more than one of these items as a crew etc etc.
I guess I am just overthinking it, really. Heh.

  • @cmm-solo

    Another brilliant idea! Yahargh!

    @YaCantDutchThis

Ah, I understand, and I definitely agree. Gotta limit the use somehow. I'm sure if Rare were to ever implement anything like this, they'd figure it out!

  • @grandmythic7 Yeah, I'd expect them to figure it out. That's why I should just like all the suggestions without thinking too much, but I really am an overthinker. :p

Do love that Skull Pendant though, since all the freaking Legendary quests have skeletons swarming islands like crazy. XD

  • @yacantdutchthis

Absolutely! As well as the Ring of Phantasms, either would be a good counter to those pesky, gun wielding Skeletons.

  • Absolutely! As noted in my post earlier about magic (purchasable scrolls from the OoS), I’m fully on board for things like this. It fits in with the lore super well, and it adds another layer of fantasy for the players.

  • Also, decided to add my suggestion to this thread as well for more visibility :)

They could introduce purchasable spell scrolls (buy from the OoS). These would be one-time-use purchases that would cost about the same as a voyage (so that all player can have access to them). They would be governed by a stocking system (you can only buy x amount of scrolls each day, or you can only buy them when skull clouds are up, etc.)
    Possible spell scrolls:

    • Spells to be used in combat (i.e. fireball)
    • Spells to be used as utilities (i.e. walking light--a light that follows you around, would be helpful when fighting shadow skellies)
    • Spells to be used on your ship (i.e. temporary cloaking, useful for ambushing enemies--makes your ship harder to see--I'm thinking active camo from Halo)

These types of things would add HUGE variety to how people play the game, plus, magic is always fun.

PLUS, we shouldn't forget that there are roughly 5 empty slots in our equipment wheels (spell scrolls, relics, whistle (call friends or pets), keys to your personal vault, bombs, etc.)

So, I've made an updated list of this thread and put it into a mega thread titled Sea of Thieves | A Chest of Ideas, a culmination of my recent ideas, and I've gotta say.. It's just ridiculous and possibly too much! But don't worry, it's only the ideas of a mad fool! Hehe. And yes, this is a shameless attempt to get more views.

  • @GrandMythic7

If they were something we could just happen upon it would make exploring a much more rewarding experience.

Like going to the deepest reaches of a cave and finding an old straw doll with a pirate hat and its legs cut off. You could sell it to the Order for a good price or you could throw it at enemies to cause them to slow down significantly.

Maybe not that exact idea, but along those lines. Obviously they'd have to be one offs. Any kind of reusable power would be difficult to balance unless we could just buy it at the store, but then you'd get the die hard "NO PROGRESSION WHATSOEVER" fanboys crying about it.

  • I'm just gonna copy one of my previous posts here since it suits this topic and we seem to think alike at least to a certain extent.
"Tbh what i want the most is for special and very rare items to be added into the game that would let you "cast spells", like summoning a storm, being able to control the wind (just making your ship go as fast as possible for a few minutes, ignoring wind direction), creating a whirlpool, conjuring mist around your ship so you could be more sneaky, making sharks surround your ship to protect you from boarding players, summon sea creatures (maybe even the kraken) or even a ghost ship crew to aid you in a fight and stuff like that, i think it would make the game much more interesting, i honestly wouldn't be even mad if a player used that on me (assuming they would be indeed very rare) since it would create such unique and fun PVP experiences."

  • @nicolasnaatz

I've been thinking about this whirlpool you've mentioned. What if that's how you encounter a new Sea Monster? Maybe a Leviathan that creates a maelstrom! Thank you for the idea.

  • Is anyone else sad that the trident is a dousing rod?... how about it summons a whirlpool under a target ship that locks it in place for a moment.

Large enough that you can't get a perfect shot in on the ship without being dragged in, and the ship stuck in the center is spun around.

  • @grandmythic7 LEVIATHAN! That would be sooo amazing! Since they are saying there will be a new NPC, I am so much hoping for this one to get in this game. And hoping it's a tad rarer but also harder than the Kraken.
I wish there would be a super hard to defeat encounter, but when you are able to get it down, you get a special chest that you can only get from that boss. Would be cool.

  • @rattlyfob

Dear God, yes. Forget about whatever I said. Good idea.

Hahaha xD i was expecting resistance and a need to defend my point but ok.

  • @yacantdutchthis

I'm just imagining that Leviathan's chest. Glorious.

  • @grandmythic7 YES! It would probably look so cool since the chest designs in this game are pretty dope, and I bet that Leviathan would look amazing too. If they were to add him.

Would also be cool to get like a 'King of sharks' chest or something if they'd ever were to add a Megalodon.

  • @grandmythic7 said in Sea of Thieves | Magic & Mysticism:

    @yacantdutchthis

:o how about magic instruments that do goofy stuff

The pied pipers flute: play this and chicken will follow you, stop and they peck you doing very little damage but make a comedic sight.

The chum drum: playing this drum calls (insert arbitrary number) of sharks to the waters near your ship

The seagulls sitar: this instrument summons a flock of seagulls that make it seem like you are over a ship wreck.

  • @RattlyFob

I'm open to criticism. This thread was started with a few ideas to get players within the community to join in on helping shape the future of this game with their own creative opinions and suggestions, which has been going along quite well I'd say.

  • @grandmythic7

Ahoy there, I really like some of the ideas you've posted there, in fact we were chatting about much the same thing while sailing the other day.

There's already a precedent from history with magical charms and talismans which sailors and pirates used to use - wind knots, coins set under the mainmast, charms to avert storms, female figureheads, horseshoes etc

We also know there's a potion shop and some artwork for the potion seller NPC, so charms and other items might also be sold there. Plus in the book, Bel already owns a set of earrings which allow for meeting the merfolk.

Definitely rare, expensive and one use but they could be a lot of fun!

  • @rattlyfob

I believe Rare has mentioned adding drums. And I do like your idea. The name itself.. 'Chum Drum'. Pirates beware attempting to climb aboard me ship!

Going to powder keg a ship
    "Do you hear drums?"
    "Huh"
    surrounded by sharks
    "What brings you here"

  • @rattlyfob

All I see and hear is some searat playing Jumanji's call on the Chum Drum with arms flailing around like a lunatic. Thank you.

    YES!! hahaha

  • @katttruewalker

Thank you, Katt. A much appreciated reply! And thank you for reminding me, I've got to read that book!

  • Small update to the list. More coming soon.

  • @grandmythic7 I feel like some magic in the game could be good, but not too much. I do wonder if they will ever bring the idea of Gods into it though? Even if it's not something which is seen, to have a maelstrom which is actually SUMMONED by a thunder strike like in PotC, i.e. Calypso goddess, or others.. poseidon making something happen etc... would be kinda cool.

I don't like the idea of too many magic items which do strange things (i.e. your permanent items suggestion).... but some kind of item which can direct players to a location, Poseidons temple, or Atlantis etc is a really nice idea! Find the item, then use it to locate something.

I also love the idea of skeleton pets, I'm sure they will come in the future, perhaps as a halloween update or something...

Leviathan - I really feel conflicted about the idea of monsters being able to summon maelstroms. I think maelstroms should be unrelated to bosses and should be a cool spontaneous event PERHAPS linked to the idea of a God but that's all. The Leviathan as a boss sounds cool and perhaps it could make very small whirlpools to spin your ship, but not a whole maelstrom in my opinion.

Undead animals - how about this, you have an island which is literally a treacherous skull place, loooads of bones everywhere, deathly quiet sea... you know there is loot there, but also tons of skeletons... perhaps it's their 'homeland'.. or their source.. and on the island all manner of wildlife is present as skeletons... birds which somehow still fly... pigs... chickens, but skeletons of all of them... that could be interesting :P

  • So, I've been looking at more of the concept art for this game, and I've noticed some pipes. Pipes! I'd really like to see those added soon. Maybe more than just a static cosmetic item and more of an interactive item, like the tankard. I mean, what is smoking a pipe to getting drunk and murdering other crews? I'd love to see them sometime soon.
