Does anyone had the trouble to catch the ladder when you have chest/barrel near it? Or ringing the bell instead. When we want to talk with NPCs we have two button options R and F. Is there an option to change ladder button for R?

You can look forward and walk backwards of the crows nest where the ladder is. Hit the "use" button and your character will grab the ladder on the way down.
The placement of the barrels helps as the above poster said. In the case of having a lot of barrels and they get in the way my suggestion works well.
