I was NOT notified that you changed the game I purchased

  • So far there have been two updates to the game. I have not received any notification about these updates or what changes were made in these updates. I don't know if this is on purpose or an oversight but having purchased a game I expect to be notified if you are making changes to the game and what those changes are. This should be done clearly within the game itself. Other Microsoft games (i.e. Halo) have an announcement screen that is accessible from the title screen that offers notification about upcoming updates and details about changes to the game after updates have taken place. I should not have to go outside of the game to receive information about changes that you are making to the game. Please provide information about planned updates/server outages and provide information about what was changed after updates have been performed. Please do this within the game.

  • @little-squash Oddly enough, you can find those patch notes on this very forum.
    https://www.seaofthieves.com/forum/topic/48245/patch-notes-discussion-1-0-2/2

  • @xjosh31
I know they are on this forum. My point is that they should be provided in game. Many people don't know to come to the forum and they shouldn't be required to. If a change is being made to something I purchased, I should be notified. The easiest way to do this is "in game" notification.

  • If you can’t be bothered to follow them on twitter or view the website once in awhile, visit the subreddit...I mean there’s lots of ways to get info. There’s a lot more pressing matters, and already avenues to get this information.

  • @little-squash No other game, to my knowledge, does this.

Even Call of Duty, one of the biggest marketed games out there, has a forum or sunreddit for their patch notes AND upcoming patch notes. Don't get upset at Rare for your lazy doings.

Give them your phone number so they can call you personally.

  • Everything is on the forum but I see what you mean. Nobody knows what's going on cause nobody knows where to look. So they come on here and complain about various issues not knowing they have been dealt with or are going to be dealt with. I keep having to link developer updates to people who get mad about silence from the developers.

  • So basically, OP, you're asking RARE to enable access to the patchnotes in-game - a feature that only two other game's I've played offer.

Don't get mad at RARE when clearly you haven't bothered to do any research yourself. A quick, 60 second or less google search would have found it, and yet you're upset.

  • @kawaii-dumpling
As I said in my original post. Halo 5, another Microsoft game, does this.

  • @little-squash

Well, thats what 343 Industries does, not Rare.

Microsoft has nothing to do with that.

  • @little-squash really halo 5 is like hey we did something that may alter your game experience, they dont go in depth with any changes, and they also let you know of special event playlists, nothing else.
If you have time to post a forum about this, you have time to grab your phone, pull up google, and type in "SoT patch notes"
    That simple

  • Seems like an odd thing to whine about.

  • It'd be nice to have a patch notes/updates pop up in game. This is more of a convenience thing and nothing that needs to be "fixed" in the game.

  • @little-squash Dude, it would be absurd to think that they WOULDN’T update their game, which means simple common sense conclusions could be drawn (they will change the game you purchase after you purchase it).

As far as what medium they will use to notify people of updates, I would say you are entitled to know what they change but they are under no obligation to spoon feed it straight to your screen so you do not have to type in a website.

Besides, this is cross-platform, so 1/2 the players are already sitting at a computer to look it up anyways.

I’m open to consider most criticism, but have zero tolerance for you being lazy. [mod edited]

  • @blam320
Actually, I have done a lot of research and if you go through my posts (which isn't really necessary), you will see that I am often answering questions on this forum for people who haven't taken the time to go and search/read. The concern is more about the number of people I talk to in game who have no idea what is going on. They don't know that they have to go to this website. It is also very confusing as things get posted in different location. Basically it is disorganized. So you end up with things like numerous posts on the forum wondering why the game isn't working when they have the servers down for maintenance. This is the kind of information that should be announced in the game itself. There should be a news/announcements screen accessible from the home screen where all players can be made aware of things like planned server shutdowns. Also they don't need to put complete patch-notes but a summary of major changes that would be noticeable to players would be helpful.

  • @little-squash rare isn't part of Microsoft first off. Secondly I have seen about 2 games that give you patch notes and then one that gives you the link to check it out yourself. Every other game that i have played you have to find the patch notes through either social media or their web page. Thirdly they don't have to notify you of any changes, there isn't any agreement stating that they have to provide the patch notes in game. If you want to find the patch notes just Google it, or go onto their Twitter or Facebook. And lastly they keep their players more informed than any other game I have ever seen. Ever since launch they have been notifying people of all sorts of problems or outages. If you don't keep up with their postings that is your fault not theirs.

  • @famousmarrow239
Yes. Obviously they are going to update this game. This game is designed such that updates are going to be a big part of the game. That is part of the reason why I think it is so important for them to make information about updates as easily accessible as possible. It's not about me being lazy. It's about making the game more accessible, which is what I think a game company would want.

  • @ladyszechuan
    Who owns Rare?

I assume you know that 343 Industries and Rare are owned by Microsoft.

  • I agree that the start up screen should have Twitter type updates. Other than in the game Rare does an excellent job informing us on Twitter and Sea of Thieves website.

  • Rocket League has a good example of this. I hope it would be an easy fix because I would much rather the kraken be revamped and more ship Customization.

  • @little-squash Most online games only publish patch notes on their website or forums. As a matter of fact, I can't recall one game that gives you the patch notes in game.

Not to set fires, not everyone uses social media...

  • Almost every program you open these days has an "available update" notification. Its not hard to get on board with that trend.
Two or three lines of coding was all it required for VB6 before the turn of the new millennium, so today it would be a mouse-click option for programmers.

I had to hear of the updates by word of mouth. Then I had to read (again by the community) that you had to uninstall before installing the updated version.
The Microsoft store offered no information what so ever. Except "you own this game". Pfft
Tell me something I don't know, like how to upgrade it.

Now I'm reading that there have been two upgrades?

  • @little-squash Yes, but it is 100% their choice as to whether they want to release in-game updates on notes, whether they're owned by Microsoft or not.

God I love me some armchair devs who've never written a line of code pretending like they know how "easy" it is to add things into games.

1: Most games don't have "an update is now available" function. Apps do. The only games that usually have alerts to updates are typically MMOs, and those alerts come on a dedicated game launcher program. But SoT doesn't have a dedicated game launcher like ESO/Warframe/WoW/etc, so it doesn't have those elements added in. No game I've ever played that launched from a standard .exe and lacked a pre-game launcher has ever had "Update now available". (We'll come back to this down the post)

2: It takes a LOT of code to add in ANY feature. It also requires going through all the previous code to ensure your code is in the right section. There's also always a chance of even the most arbitrary of code to cause hiccups to the rest of the game. That's the fun of coding. So even if they add it in, it will go through quality testing, which will take time, to ensure it didn't accidentally break anything. It isn't a quick "15 seconds done!".

3: No game company owes anyone "Updates available" notes in-game. Hell, they don't even owe you patch notes on a forum or website. It is done out of courtesy of the player, not obligation. Maybe if you all tried asking nicely and being respectful instead of jumping on forums, shouting petulantly "GIVE ME MY THINGS" people would see gamers as less of an immature breed of people. All you are doing here is hurting the chances of stuff getting seen or taken seriously, and adding to the reputation of gamers being petulant and immature. No one wants to hear someone pitch a fit and whine.

As many have already pointed out, Rare has posted patch notes all over. There are countless resources online that you can refer to. Attributing the lack of an in-game resource to "laziness" is ignorance and entitlement. It's also showing how lazy the lot of you are that navigating to a website to get info is too hard. Made ironic by the fact you had time to navigate here to complain and insult the devs about it.

And unless you've ever coded a game. An actual game, don't presume to know what is needed to add anything into a game. This wasn't made in GameMaker Studio. It was made in Unreal. Unreal doesn't have drag and drop design features like GMS does. There is no "push a button and p**f a new feature". That doesn't exist. Even the drag and drop design of GMS requires some knowledge of coding to make each piece work right. Because you're literally dragging code blocks around and have to know the order to place them, what attributes they need, and how they might affect previously placed blocks.

If you really think coding is that easy, surely you could produce the very thing you want of Rare and sell it to them, no? If not, ask nicely and show some respect.

Resources you have to learn about patch updates:

    • Google
    • Twitter
    • This forum

Use them. Be respectful. Don't be lazy and then project on the devs.

Frankly, I think Sea of Thieves would benefit from a dedicated launcher like standard MMOs have. There's a way to bring that up:

    "Hey Rare,

I enjoy your game but I sometimes miss out on when you've updated the game. I think it'd really help the experience if SoT had a dedicated launcher much like other MMOs have, where you could display news and links to patch notes.

    Thanks!"

See? Not so hard to do.

Have a nice day and smooth sailing!

  • I don't think it's a big deal. The way ESO does it is in your face and annoying. But I could understand why people want it. Why not just stick it in the main menu as an option.

  • OP this is unrelated and please don't be mad...but do you have this haircut by any chance?

  • @little-squash just because Microsoft bought rare doesn't mean they have control. Your link explains that they bought it so they could make Microsoft exclusive games, doesnt mean they have control of their content or what they do with said content. Also you missed the point that there are very few games that actually give you in game patch notes. Every other game i have played on either xbox or playstation i have had to look the notes up with a new update. Also like I stated if you follow hem via social media you are kept up to date on everything, between downed servers to patch notes.

I think your right it would be a great small edition to the game that all players would get a on screen notification and could access the patch notes right from the menu. This would get the word out faster to new players and old. Great idea! maybe a little harsh on the execution though ;), but none the less great idea!

Clearly you did not do any research. By that I mean you didn't bother to take the time to actually look up what it was you were searching for online. It's not that difficult to do a google search, even from the Xbox. And anyone who isn't aware that patchnotes are on the official website, I know exactly what to say, but for the sake of decency I shall keep that to myself.

You fully expect it huh? Funny... it never announced that all updates performed would include notification to you.

Games get updates, some you'll like some you won't. It is what it is.

  • a sort of psa bulletin board in the main menu has been suggested a couple of times. i expect it to be implemented with one the coming patches in the future after the performance and glitches have been ironed out. maybe the big content patch after 3 month post release. it makes sense, rare is very close to the community and shows great interest in communicating.
