I Blame Microsoft

  • I know we all feel like our problems with Sea of Thieves might not have existed if RARE kept the game in development a while longer.

I feel like that might have been the case, if Microsoft hadn’t immediately started promoting it as their new flagship title for their game pass and the Xbox One X.

Get the distinct feeling that content was cut from the release, and the game was rushed to meet Microsoft’s demands and deadlines.

The game is fine. It hasn't even been a month since release. I expect a game like this to grow for many years.

  • @blam320 how much longer do you think they needed? I feel like I've been watching trailers for this game for 4 years now...

  • The game got stuck in dev hell, the intial game was even going to have vertical progression for ships but was scrapped for some reason.

The problem is that it didn't have enough content off the base to keep most casual players around. That and the intense grief fest from the original player respawn mechanic has sent plenty of players packing already. Most will probably never return.

  • do you people ever stop crying about the game?

  • the thing is no matter how many delays you would still get complaining because it seems so many ppl are expecting a different game.
you can blame Microsoft not because of the promotion but because Rare is a Microsoft studio.

  • @tempopr wont grow if the current players leave. they really need to implement some major fixes because this game is being marketed as an MMO and it barely meets that label. need xp, need factions, need pvp, need instances or dungeons or something else because i'm a week into playing this game and I'm pretty sure it will be traded in by this weekend because its just boring. oh cool i grind for hours to buy a fancy looking blunderbuss taht does....nothing....i can go kill skeletons or find treasures or find animals and....thats basically it? I know about strongholds and stuff and that was fun, probably what saved the game from being traded in right then and there but this game has no legs beyond that first week with the current content...

    Got a link?

  • They had four years to make this and it’s Microsoft’s fault for rushing them. If anything Microsoft got screwed on this deal as sea of thieves was supposed to be one of few Microsoft exclusives even has that is ultimately going to fail. Rare silence on everything is Microsoft’s fault to?

  • @rarestarfish386
    This.
    All on Rare.

Fairly certain most of that was spent on the water mechanics. Don't quote me on that. We know for certain that certain cosmetic content in the final beta was cut for launch.

And did you not check the news tab last week? They released a statement on what they are working on and what changes they are pushing this week. Not to mention the launch day update video that explained all of the bugs and glitches they were working on.

  • @uvg-reign http://gameaxis.com/interviews/interview-rares-sea-thieves/

  • People sure do love to blame Microsoft. Microsoft gave Rare free reign to create any title they wanted and didn’t interfere. They had a deadline from day one and they were going to miss it. MS even delayed it. What would Rare have done with another year? They could have easily of spent that time giving us an actual anchor and maybe move the ammo box further away from the weapon box. Let’s not get carried away here. What we have is four years of hard work and it’s not a whole lot.

Microsoft is a business. They could have let Rare make this game for another five years but that’s not feasible is it. Unless everyone thinks making games, paying salaries and keeping the lights on at Rare's fancy studio is free.

If anything maybe Microsoft were TOO lenient. Maybe if there was someone breathing down Rares neck and putting their foot down then we all might be playing a more complete game.

  • Do you want to know the worst aspect of all is? We have Skull and Bones coming later this year. And while Skull and Bones isn't the same sandbox type game that Sea of Thieves purports to be, it could very well kill off any remaining heat Sea of Thieves has. This game is desperate for more game. This game is desperate for another round of refinement. Everything feels so clunky and cheap.

No, what you need to understand is Rare only develop for Microsoft. just like EA Ubisoft and many other big companies that make games, they have studios under that make the game therefore if Microsoft (which supply rare with money) say "We need the game now" they can't say no. many games have been rush and I'm pretty sure that is one of them.

  • I blame Rare. 5 years in development on a ready engine. Some other companies can even write their own engine and a full game in that time. Or the team was extremely lazy, they had no idea what they were doing or some game design director was too picky and was sending everything back to the development and design teams too many times.

  • @hudson-rl what would Rare do with 1 extra year of development? Easy answer. 3 more sails icons and at least one ship texture. But seriously, something is very wrong with the team. They started to really work a year before release, the moment MS closed Lionhead for being lazy and making a c**p game.

Rare are owned by Microsoft and so MS has to take some responsibility for not managing there own studio. After all Rare is now a fully fledged part of Microsoft not just some studio they have a deal with.

  • @ragecagez While I disagree about SoT feeling clunky and cheap, SnB looks to be a game that will probably give some of the more vocal complainers what they want- a true dark and gritty pirate game with all the modern game fixings ( vertical progression, more refined character/vessel customization, deeper combat systems and more challenging, diverse enemy NPCs )- HOWEVER, I don't think I will have more fun in that world. I like the bright graphics and art-style of SoT. Hopefully by the time that comes out Rare will have added a bunch of stuff and maybe, just maybe, most of the griefers will migrate to SnB

You sure spend a lot of time on the forum instead of playing the game for someone that finds it so perfect.

  • @blam320

I feel like most of what should have been at release was held back for the micro-transaction store in 2 months time.

.... we'll just have to wait and see.

The game got stuck in dev hell, the intial game was even going to have vertical progression for ships but was scrapped for some reason.

Because those systems make it hard to play with friends and give advantage to people like myself that have been playing longer.

Rather than your own skill, it just becomes a numbers game and I'm sorry you and some others might want that but I do not.

SoT needs to remain a cosmetic only game, with horizontal progression.

I want to know that if a crew beat me, it was because our crew made a mistake, their crew capitalized on that and they were better than us.

You can't get that feeling if they had higher armor rating and your cannons had less dps stats.

Not necessarily, ever heard of something called matchmaking ?

Flash news : It's not even only useful in games with a vertical progression system, it's also useful in games where noobs have close to no chance to win against ranked players, like Mobas.

  • Met an IRL freind tonight, asked about it, told him stopped playing for numerous reasons, he agreed but replied "spent €70 so gonna get my moneys worth! ".

Thats exactly the only reason people are still playing and supporting, regardless of how many deniers there are 💰💰

  • I never read that article, wow:

Part of what we want to achieve is that if you think of what you can do in the game, you should be able to do it. So if two ships pull up alongside, and if you want to jump across them and take over the ship after getting rid of the other crew, you actually can.

We’re trying to find the right amount of loss though. You need to care about the ship, and when you lose it, there needs to be a way you can get your ship back to carry on playing. So if you lose your ship or die, there will be some loss but we’ll get you back into the game and get your ship back for you for you to carry on playing.

If your boat is stolen by another crew, it effectively becomes their boat. And you just get another version of your old boat. Like how your boat will become theirs and your identity is wiped from it. They get to keep a copy of your old boat and you get yours back.

I keep seeing the original ship's crew respawn on the boat. This ever get implemented?

  • @personalc0ffee you do know that you fight against the most random element in the world, the weather. Sometimes you win a battle because the waves/wind was in your favour and not because you were the better team.

Every game is a numbers game, how much health do you have, how far are you from a player, how much ammo do you have, what weapons are you using. Sidegrade would just change dynamics of that numbers game.

I think some aspects of the game could have different type of progression, like how you setup your ship.

Because that would be garbage and ruin the game, cutting this was the best decision they made

  • @xmadxworldx how do you know if you didn't test it?

  • @zynthetikk86 because the whole point of this game is to keep an even playing field throughout, anything that offers boosted stats ruins that unless it's available 100% to everyone from the very beginning. This game is not now, nor will it ever be about vertical progression

  • @xmadxworldx I agree that straight up vertical would not work if you don't use match making, but sidegrades would work since you wouldn't be stronger.

  • @zynthetikk86 I'm all for side grades, but anything vertical breaks the core of the game. I should be able to take six months off playing this game, come back, and be on the same playing field as everyone else (minus natural talent and being rusty with mechanics)
