Don't get me wrong. I like it, but it could be more.
I would like to have the ability to open the chests and find random objects inside and then sell those objects to one of the vendors, you could even find random clothing and other cosmetic items for you and your crew (that you could possibly sell for a little bit of gold if no one wanted them?). The better the chest, the better the loot inside. Essentially making chests more of a storage unit rather than the actual commodity itself.
(Kind of like the empty banana crates that you can find.)
This would also mean that you can switch objects out between your chests. That way if someone sneaks aboard your ship they might grab the Captain's Chest, instead of the Castaway's Chest, only to find that it's full of junk. Just another way to outsmart your fellow scallywags.
Plus, you could bargain with other crews by promising a share of your loot in exchange for some form of assistance.
I just think it would be much more rewarding to find a chest, open it, and then find out what kind of goodies are inside.
(Obviously I wouldn't expect this to be implemented any time soon, just a thought to consider down the road.)
