War flag vs. Peace Flag regarding PVP

  • So I searched far and wide and found a locked post regarding flags So here are my thoughts on maybe how to alleviate the stress some people appear to have and the potential to lose long earned treasure because of the PVP aspect. While I myself am OK with it as is myself, I think this might add a bit of extra depth to the PVP element of the game and I have no problem with running an extra pulley if something like this was implemented.

Implement a flag system. Raise a second flag to symbolize the ship is ready for war. The flag could be on a pulley system to allow a single player to raise and lower it. Timed raise of about 15-20 seconds to keep people from sneaking in and just randomly trolling people but to give ships/crews a chance to run or defend. But if you get caught off guard you can defend yourself even if your flag is lowered and thus canons could be enabled so long as a ship ready for battle is within canon range or some distance and has a canon ball land near you. Obviously its just a thought and would need to be looked at in depth. But flags in the days of legit piracy were at times flown to drive fear into other ships personnel and signify that ship was ready for battle.

I picture a player in the nest watching for ships and rocks. All the sudden one is on the horizon with flags raised. The bell is rung and stations are taken or course is changed. A battle is either had or not.

On the other side, I picture a ship sailing ready for battle searching with flags raised. They encounter a ship and give chase. Pirate stuff ensues and either they sink the ship, get sunk, or the game of cat and mouse ensues and are either lost or move on.

Similarly, both ships come across each other in peaceful flag mode. Neither can shoot canons but ship A starts to raise the flag. It's not instant because one person can raise or lower and the flag must be raised in order to enable the canons. Ship B wants nothing of it, raises anchor and takes off or fights to defend itself.

A kraken attack enables everything and so on...

Just a few situations that could arise. Of course, other pirates boarding ships would be different all together.

Anyways, this was just my thought on making the game possibly even better for all. While maintaining the potential for epic ship battles and chases between everyone still.

  • this would be abused and pvp players would say they are peaceful

  • I concur that this system would be heavily abused. I personally do not see a need to make a flag system seeing as how we are all pirates technically and don’t exactly follow the rules. Flags are a great idea, however I do not think flags should be capable of activating or deactivating weapons, if players wish to acknowledge other crews flag signals or disregard them is all part of this awesome pirate experience.

I would however like to see a flag customizer for the ship flags to give crews some more creativity with their own banners.

  • Real pirates did often use false flags to get up close to spanish galleons and immediately changed it once they got close, and it'd be a nice addition to the game.

I think two flags would be enough, one customizable and one white (peace) flag.

When the white flag is raised, canons can't be used, but its a perfectly okay strategy to use it like real pirates did. Likewise it'd feel safer to pass a ship in the hope that they wouldn't change flag, but you'd have to pay attention if they did

  • Hell yes, my buddy and I were talking about this idea earlier. It would be super fun to run up different kinds of flags to communicate with other ships at a longer distance than shouting.

    Examples:
The Jolly Roger: We're pirates, out for blood, taking no prisoners.

White Flag: We surrender, let's negotiate a peace treaty.

Yellow Flag: Don't mess with us, we won't mess with you

Green Flag: We're a party boat, come play music and chill

Custom Flags: More ship customization options. There are so many versions of the Jolly Roger to choose from:

Of course players could run up flags disingenuously, and honestly that adds to the fun. What if your ship is super beat up, and you put up the white flag to draw them in, but then unload all your cannons when they don't expect it? What if you're 2 people running a Galleon, so you run up the Jolly Roger in the hopes that people won't mess with you? You're still communicating over long distances with other ships. I'd love to be able to spot a distant ship, pull out my telescope, sight their flag, and have fun guessing at it's intentions. This is a super cool idea with a ton of potential for emergent gameplay.

  • @immortalcoag The way I see it, player interaction is important to the equation that is SoT. Essentially, doing this would allow players to take the player interaction they may get and cut it in half. That is to say, no more battles, but you might make friends. Also, what is discouraging players from raising the PC flag when they have a truck load of loot? It takes away a sense of danger and urgency to sailing around with a massive haul of booty. Perhaps, instead of the flags directly altering the game mechanics, they can be used to communicate. For example, a sloop is looking for another ship to team up with. Whether this is for music and grog, or for alliance in war, it doesn't matter. Another ship sees the peace flag and may negotiate a deal where they work together. Maybe they'll trade. Maybe they'll become friends.
Conversely, you could have the War flag up to tell players that you're looking for a fight, filtering out any cowardly crews. The only problem I see with my suggestion is people could put up the peace flag and trick other crews into a suprise attack. Either way, you have an interesting idea, but it needs tweaks.

  • I agree that flags should not affect the gameplay of the ship, like disabling the canons. That would break the fiction and not be as fun. I wouldn't callusing disingenuous flags "abuse", it's just something you'd have to realize when reading flags.

  • Great discussion guys/gals. Yes my idea would need some tweaking. I was just thinking that in order for it to not be abused that canons would need disabled unless the flag is raised. And if someone sees the flag being raised they can choose to run or stay or get caught off guard. Obviously it is a game and not a true simulation. This entire thought came from toxic Facebook communities regarding PVP. I personally enjoy the battles and chases. Anyways, I am just popping in here before reporting possible bugs or even a hack I saw last night. I enjoy the game very much. Just want everyone else to also!
