Re-downloading game after every update after launch?

  • From what I heard in the past they were unsure if they were going to get into the game launch the ability to get updates to the people with out re-downloading the whole game for every update. My friend and I were wondering if they are going to get this in for launch. slow downloads and data caps are a pain but it is all we got where we are from.

I found where i seen the post about the re-downloading.
also never really uses forums so i am not uses to all the tips and tricks of them.

Pre-ordered content should not be able to be downloaded until a week prior to launch which at that point more information I am sure will come as to which to have.

But keep in mind that the game could be updated after it was downloaded and we still do not know if Rare let the game be updated with patches or completely.

Will your intention be for us to always download the full game for every update to the game or will we actually get to a point after release to only download the patch data?

Yes, it is our intention where you only need to download the changed data. That's quite a complex problem to solve though so it's taking us a while to get it right. Again I can't promise this for launch but we'll get it in as soon as we can as I know it can be difficult for those with download caps or slower speed connections.

Having to re-download the game every single time theres and update sounds really weird to me, dont think that would be the case? Dont quote me on it though, but ive never seen any other game do that ever.

Not the best comparison, but Star Citizen did that until recently.

I'd be surprised though if they didn't have some kind of delta patcher. That's what most games do and only update the files that change.

  • This was one question i was hoping would be picked to get answered in the live show and the AMA.

I have unlimited data use, and a max d/l speed of 5Mbits. Generally downloads around 1-2Mbits since its shared and being used by others in the house. Its wifi and the only option where i live. It takes near 20 hours to download the game everytime. If i only need to update 1-2 Gigs every update id be happy.

This is what I would expect. I've never heard of another game requiring a full reinstall for every update. The updater basically just checks the new build vs the old build for differences, and replaces those files.

  • @alymon that's because they were using Cry Engine. Most games only download incremental patches, hopefully this one does the same.

  • would love to know this info to know if it is even worth it to downloading this download that came out from the pre-ordering of the game or not until they have it in the game.
