Add hotkeys for items on PC

  • Rare, please add the ability to hotkey items to your number keys on the PC. I understand that this is a cross platform game but xbox players DO have the capacity to use a mouse and keyboard if they so wish.

Beyond that, a very recent MMO has shown that it is possible to tailor the gameplay experience to both controller and keyboard without depreciating the play experience for either by playing to their unique strengths. The game I am referencing is FF14. In that game, the creative use of toggles allows for controller users to be just as fast and efficient as keyboard players without lessening the experience of the keyboard player by removing or limiting action bars, hotkeys or macros.

What I would like to see is:

Once the item menu is brought up by holding Q, the player can then mouse over the desired item and press, 3, 4, 5, etc respectively to then bind that item to the desired key. This would greatly reduce frustration when swapping to bananas in combat, when changing between boards and buckets, heck, even if you wanted to bust out in a tune as your enemy drifts to the locker below.

I recognize you may have wished to find a happy medium between control input devices but what we have is a system that doesn't elevate the controller user's experience while depreciating the keyboard player's experience, especially when over-panning your mouse can lead to you being tabbed out of the game or your mouse going to an entirely different monitor all together should you have a multi-monitor set up.

  • The problem with hotkeys is that Sea of Thieves is a CONSOLE game at heart. The game is cross-play with PC and console players playing together. If a PC player can hot-swap between items in an instant, it's going to give them a significant advantage over console players in battle, and thus, would be pretty unfair.

  • This would be a big help for quickly finding that bucket or banana :)

  • Mouse and Keyboard isn't supported on the Xbox version yet. ..

Anyway, I think I read that the PC team wanted to add hotkey support. Think it may have been Ted Timmons PC Gamer talk.

I have not used the controller yet but I am assuming that you hold down a shoulder button to open the radial menu. If that is the case, you can just as easily keybind items on the controller as with the keyboard.

For example, lets say you hold LB to open the radial menu. You then select the item and while holding LB, press Y, B, or X (assuming A is the 'More' button). You then simply press LB+Y or LB+B or LB+X to quickly swap to the selected item. It would give absolutely no advantage while achieving a more fluid and enjoyable item selection.

Further more, the game is going to be inherently biased towards PC despite your claims that it is a console game at heart due to the fact that mouse and keyboard are simply the better option for an FPS game space. There are plenty of games in which a controller works far better, most fighters, racing games, action RPGS. Real world examples being Rocket League, Dark Souls series, For Honor, Nier Automata.

Beyond that, depreciating the play experience of over half your player base simply seems like bad game design. I gave the example of final fantasy 14 using a creative means of action bar swapping in order to achieve both fluid gameplay on console AND PC. It can be done, it should be done.

  • I'm not sure how it worked on a console, either, as I was playing on PC. But if it's like other games with a radial, there is no quick-swap button. You hold a button to bring up the radial, move the cursor over it, then press a button to activate it.

Also, your assumption that "over half" the player base is PC-based feels a bit biased. The console market is much larger than the PC market, and while the numbers vary game to game, I don't think SoT deviates from that much.

  • @surlystubbles if i'm not mistaken, microsoft has allowed Keyboard and mouse use on the xbox already, it is up to the developers to allow it or not.

and honestly, as an MMO, i'm surprised this isn't already a thing: 4k support, HDR, runs on potatoes, but no keybinds?

It is possible to do the same thing for the controller as well as I suggested in my earlier post as well. I just hope they add it into the game before it goes live. #unrealisticexpectations.
