I was playing the scale test this weekend and wondering whether chests despawn or not, and if they do, how long do they have to be there on land or in the water?
Do chests despawn?
@hailthejelybean Yes they do, they despawn a lot quicker in the water than they do on land though. On land, it can be up to an hour and in water 20 minutes or so as they sink to the bottom and wait for there for a short while before totally despawning.

I wondered that too because I wanna start a community wide chest search so I can hide chests on an island and put clues on reddit or the forum
problem with this is the only people who would have any chance at finding it would have to be on one of the few other ships that are on your game server at any given time
@Saltyzar Yeah, There is a limited amount of players in a server so I doubt that would be possible because most of the players that see your reddit post won't be on your server.
@djporks69 I realize that so that's what makes it extra special. First you gotta solve the riddle for the correct island and then you gotta find the spot on the island and you gotta be on the lucky server :p
And thinking of 20 chests in total on 1 spot
@bookoftheblade yeah but that's what makes it special :p do you go find it and take the risk of not being on the correct server or just gonna ignore it and miss out on a 20+ chest reward

While the idea is amusing, the odds are really, really, really low. There have been 332 000 players during the closed beta, for more than 2 000 000 hours on the sea, so, that makes an average of 6 hours per player, over the course of 48 hours, so we can estimate roughly 50 000 players at the same time at any given moment (and there will be much more on the open beta, and even more at release), if there is 24 players per server (well, 23 without yourself, assuming you'll do that alone), that means each player will have 0.046% chance to be on the same server as you. My math may be a bit off but you get the gist.

I don't know exactly but surely not enough to my taste. I don't know why they sink so quickly, i hope they will make it stay much longer, i can see how that could be so ressource expensive for the server that they have to make them disappear so quick.
