AI boss mechanic discussion

  • I wanted to make a post about this after the skeleton fort announcement.

I wanted to throw some ideas about skeleton bosses and how they can differ/add excitment to a pve experience.

What boss like effects would you like to see?
What bosses in previous games have you enjoyed facing and why?
What would you want AI bosses to be/look like?

    My ideas:

Ild love the AI bosses to have some sort of early mid and end battle mechanic which changes up the fight.
My biggest nightmare for this game would be just a buffed skeleton npc.
Would really like to see some cool mechanics.

    1. maybe some sort of shield at points in the fight and AI waves you need kill

    2. some sort of possession of a player where you have to defend yourself from your zombie crewmate.

    3. b***y traps, pits, secret passages you need to use/avoid

4)some sort of nuke you need to dodge at various points in the fight

    1. a multi part fort voyage where you need special items to defeat the boss

    2. special areas you need to learn to hit to defeat a boss

    3. certain rituals you need to learn to banish the boss.

  • It would be cool beans to see some of the features you mentioned, in different degrees. Would definitely make if feel more like a raid encounter. At least more from what we've been told so far.... But at the same time, it's hard to tell if Rare is avoiding a conflict model such as this. They may not want a typical vanilla raid boss type encounter.... If that's the case though, they're going to have to come up with something insane and awesome, in order to keep it from being more of the same type of boss fight from other AAA games.

  • @k7-issues I agree, but personally think Rare realizes that other players are the boss encounter. Don't get me wrong, if there were other bosses outside these forts, sure more mechanics would be great and welcomed. But remember when the forts become active, there is a giant sign saying "Come here scallywags and kill each other for our treasure, destroy each others boats before you can haul our loot away." Rare doesn't need to add mechanics, they added the fuse to make the mechanics, welcome to emergent content.

  • @zokraitz That goes in line with what I meant. Sorry if I wasn't clear lol

  • Yes, i'm really hoping for more "advanced" enemies. Not too advanced though. Just a sprinkle of something.

It's already confirmed that they're working on different types of skeletons though. And i'm sure this means they can have different perks, like past traits, skillsets or abilities at their disposal. While also having a different AI.

I was thinking to myself... What if some really really big and tough pirate got slain on the seas - then raised as a skeleton brute. That would be a formidable foe!

    Skeleton Brute:
Skeleton brutes are a special type of skeleton. They're larger both in height and mass, than the normal skeletons you encounter. Although they move about, very slowly - they are incredible strong and can easily lift and throw boulders aswell as explosive-barrels at players or ships.

When engaged in combat, Skeleton Brutes will try to hit or grab nearby pirates in melee range.

A melee hit deals about 60 damage and knocks the player several meters up in the air when struck.

A grab deals 15 damage per second until the grabbed pirate is dead or the brute is interrupted by other players.

The brute are slow and rotates even slower, so if the brute finds himself up against a crew of skilled and cunning pirates, that circles him so he can't get to melee or grab them, he can choose to stomp the ground dealing 30 damage to nearby pirates while knocking them back.

If no enemy players are in melee range, he will start to throw explosive-barrels. If no barrels are around to pick up, he will dig up a boulder from the ground and use that (just as we dig up chests, effect-wise)

Boulder Toss: Functions like a cannon ball. Just a boulder instead.
Explosive Barrel: Functions like an explosive-barrel.

Just a quick idea off of my head.
