All,
Now that we all have experienced selecting our pirate, It seems to me that the Character Randomizer is not generating as unique Pirates as promised. Exhibit A: https://twitter.com/GodsPhoenix4/status/965637738753150979

So the CPU generates random pirates using something like 20 different attributes.
I am really bad at math for pirates only need to count their treasure!
You'll get at least 400 different characters. Those 400 different characters then can be customize with what you find in the shop.
And since there is no stats on the cosmetics, we wont end up with everyone wearing the HAT THAT INSTAKILLS PEOPLE or something like that. Since it'll be down to pure fashion (pirates be stylish YAR!).
I believe that while there is in fact not an infinite number of pirates, making uniqueness possible, there are still little chance to come across your twin brother from another mother.
Please be sure that pirates like to exaggerate for deception is one of the many weapons pirates will use.
Might as well let people make the pirate they want; as soon as they have the gold, you'll just see loads of people in Black Dog gear, or all Admiral, or whatever. Players will find a way to look the same, so don't try and stop it.
Creating random characters with all this PgDn nonsense is madness. It just won't have had any effect after 2-3 months and everyone wears the 'best' or 'coolest' clothes.
@ironuzuka Well not exactly. Each of those 20 attributes can have an infinite number of different values. Plus we do not know what the ranges for said values are. It could be 0.00001 to 40 or 1 to 5, and each attribute could have a different range. Larger ranges will create many more unique looking pirates. You calculation was 20x20=400. This is assuming that each character is only created with two different attributes, and that the range is 1-20, only including integers. Assuming that each attribute has 20 possible integer values, we need to multiply 20 by itself 20 times. This means 20 to the 20th power or 20^20. This equals 1.048576x10^26, or about 104,857,600,000,000,000,000,000,000 different combinations. This number becomes bigger when the number of possible values also becomes bigger. Considering that it's called the "Infinite Pirate Generator" leads me to believe that non-integer values can also be used. That means that there are an infinite amount of possible values between 1 and 20, thus leading to infinite combinations. However this means a large amount of pirates will still look very similar, which is true from what I've seen.
Note that I'm not a mathematician either so I am might be wrong as well.
@godsphoenix13 I love the idea of being able to lock in a character each turn of generation, or multiples! It would help the players selection and really pinpoint what the player is looking for.
There is a super compendium post (#115) on the IPG Mega Thread detailing the community requests into workable systems. Locking characters is one of the main points. You should check it out.
