If you first ally other ships and see which one has free crew place you can ask them if a friend can join. When they finished playing your friend owns the boat and invites more friends.. its possible just takes time and making allies to get extra boats -.-

Perhaps Rare should release another game called “Sea of Holding Hands with Friends” and remove alliances from this game altogether. Then, people who want to play a pirate game can play Sea of Thieves and people who want to play a co-op boat campaign can play Sea of Holding Hands with Friends.

So first of all the best chance to get multiple ships in the same lobby would be to have everyone who wants to play all get a gallon or brigantine and start the adventure at the same time and when everyone gets in they should put their reaper flag up and then the ppl in the group look for the ship. I've done this and it's worked a couple times but it's definitely still a long shot. If it doesn't work then a couple ppl at a time leave the game and try again. It doesn't work all the time though. Secondly I feel griefers dont generally have a lot of friends to play with so the people who do this probably won't grief to much. Good luck to anyone who tries this, its still a pain in the but to pull off.
