Jump Spamming in game

  • For all of those that got to test SoT so far. I am looking at opinions on the jump spamming issue both pros and cons. I know for my self I have been on both sides in PVP and it can get very frustrating.

Many games online now incorporate a Jump Cool Down system in order to level the playing field for every one. Is this something they should incorporate into the game for combat or not?

"Yarrrr! there be ony two ranks of leader amongst us pirates! Captain and if your really notorious then it’s Cap’n!"

  • No, mobility makes things fun and can increase the skill cap. I also hope they don't touch the sword dash mechanic and how far you can fall without dying.

If they add crouching, however, I would not be against a timer system that would prevent dolphin spamming in combat.

  • @clarkalii I dont believe spamming would increase the skill cap, what would is new mechanics that have been properly tested

  • @canadianmuscle3

Could always add a stamina bar.

Fast swimming, running, and jumping would deplete it and it would fill again in 'x' seconds of slower movement.

  • @canadianmuscle3 I jumped over a cannonball in mid-air once while it was coming at me. I was freaking proud of myself! Of course the next one killed me, but whatever. In my mind I had already won for the day.

I honestly didn't have a problem for, or against it. Sometimes a player would jump and I would end up with a body-shot instead of a head-shot. Or sometimes a player would jump and my Blunderbuss would hit centermass and become a 1-shot.

I do not think of Sea of Thieves as a competitive shooter, nor is the gun mechanics so serious or accurate that it really even matters. A basic stamina system would work pretty nicely, but I don't know if its something overly important or not. At least its not in my mind.

  • @classic-buffalo

Mobility in general increases the skill cap in FPS games because the player can perform more creative moves and make it more difficult for the person shooting at him. That's partly why arena shooters like Quake and UT are lauded.

If there is a jump timer in this game, mid to close range combat will be way too easy for PC players, especially because the guns are all hit scan with the exception of the sniper rifle (And boring... especially battles on the top deck of a ship). It is also incredibly easy to no scope in SoT because the bullet goes to the middle of the screen regardless.

Spamming crouch also increases the skill cap, but it is an uninteresting mechanic and a less telegraphed move (it's too fast), in my opinion. At least with jumping, you can move around but be vulnerable while in the air (telegraphed move). H1Z1 is a good example of crouch spamming gone wild. They've patched it since.

  • Maybe adding a nerf to jump that decrease the acuracy of weapon should be fine :)

  • @clarkalii No weapons are hitscan

  • I come to the conclusion that every pvp game needs a stamina bar, otherwise everybody will just jump around to dodge the attacks.

I think in matters of cross play a nerf of the jump skill would also make sense, otherwise PC gamer have a huge advantage on dodging.

  • I can take it or leave it. This is not a major issue, for me. Mostly because all of my combat experience was taken with a grain of salt in severity.

I would win some, I would lose some. The fight mechanics in SoT just made most victories hilarious.

    Why is this needed?
It's like removing officer pieces in chess to "level the playing field" because low level players cannot use them to their full potential.

    Aim better?
As @clarkalii pointed out, mobility is key for most FPS games to give it some learning curve.

  • Why don't we just complain about every little minute detail that makes us believe we're not being out-played, but exploited against or cheated somehow due to unfair use of an in-game function?

I feel like a large portion of this forum won't be happy till they force Rare to make this a text based adventure, or a point and click exploration game.

Hey, monkey island was one of my favorites.. I don't mind playing some more if it comes to that. 0:)

  • @kgmshylian

I also like Monkey Island, but if I want more Monkey Island, I'll wait for a new Monkey Island game or replay the old ones.

  • @face-0-o It was a joke to lighten up the mood.. meh will take myself out instead.

  • I think they need to make jumping a bit more realistic I mean your able to jump from your ship to another when that ship is 20 feet away which not even the top athletes in the world can do.

  • @otawa-noob make jumping realistic? What about the rest of the game? The whole idea of the game is to be tongue in cheek...

Ah, is that the case for the pistol and blunderbuss? I could hardly tell in medium and close quarter combat, so I don't think it matters that much when talking about jumping around in CQC / MQC. The velocity is fast enough. Good to know, though.

  • Noooo, this will ruin the game for me if they add a cool down to jumping.

I used the jump a lot when I was out exploring. It just gives me that much more freedom in the game.

  • @canadianmuscle3 In my experience, if a pirate is close enough to shoot you with his gun, you already done goofed. I don't see the FPS close combat to be that centrally focused in the overall game, so it would mostly just seem like a punishment to people who are out voyaging or just jumping around the deck of the ship.

  • @lenny2k3
Well, we can discuss now if jumping around is intended by game developers in order to give the player more mobility or not. But I think I don't like your discussion attitude so I say good day Sir.

Yep, this would work and make the constant jumping less attractive ! The jump-o**y is not a realistic behaviour and just gives a bad picture. If there is a little malus, like a delay in walking after the jump, would help to end this ugly rubberball nonsense.
