Microtransactions appeared in Microsoft Store

  • microtransactions
    Copied from reddit.

We all know that microtransactions are in every game nowadays.
In SoT the only reward you can have are cosmetics. According to this i hope the cosmetics from MTX wouldn't be the same as you can buy for IN-Game currency.
We need to see which one pirate is an experienced one and which one is just rich.

  • Bump. Because this one is important.

  • (Copy paste from other transaction thread)
On their podcasts they have talked about updating the game post launch and that wouldn't happen if there weren't micro-transactions involved so really we have always known. I'm confident they will be cosmetic only, but the problem with that is all progression in-game from what I've seen is cosmetic so it would seem like your paying for progression.

Still though it isn't impossible to have micro-transactions in a game like this and have it seem fair, if they balance it right with perhaps not having store exclusive skins and being able to actually earn them in-game as-well as not being able to just pay for hard to get stuff it will be fine. Can always just wait till release or pick up the $10 game pass if you have doubts though.

I'll also point out you can already buy outfits in the game with real world money, IE: the ferryman outfit for the controller and a blunderbuss from buying a hard-drive.

  • Here we go...

  • @subzarr as i said if there will be Premium $$$ suits which will looks like a golden boy vs voyages sets f.e. kraken set i can live with microtransactions. The problem appears when you can buy kraken set for $$

  • @avecrux I'm sure this will just be in game cosmetics and nothing more... nice spot though!

  • If microtransactions enable them to improve post-launch support then I am all for it. That is on the provision it doesn't go pay to win, which at the moment seems to be a safe bet.

  • If they're purely for cosmetic purposes then I won't have an issue. However I will also say that they shouldn't be there to replace totally unrealistic ways to unlock skins in game too. Such blatant money grabbing would just push players away.

*Flashbacks to EA's Star Wars character unlock system... (shudders)

  • @chocco91 @Porkin5 there will be purely cosmetics for sure.

  • @avecrux Hey. I don't think it's true that the only rewards are cosmetic. Even in the very limited closed beta we had the bluderbuss. I will be disappointed if the they introduce very little in the way of actual objects that influence gameplay, as is currently the state. To be honest most games I play I focus on the mechanics of the game over cosmetics. For example all of the digital card games I play/played I reduce cosmetic rewards into in-game currency to better afford actual cards.

Cosmetics are great, buy I see them as the icing on the cake. Really not sure they can motivate me alone, or as the core gameplay purchase.

  • @ark-851225141 devs said there will be only cosmetics to buy. Blunderbuss is the only one item where you have some advantage with purchase but you can buy it after 1hr of playing.

  • @avecrux Wow. That sounds ridiculous to me. So we can't buy new gear (weapons, tools) or upgrade anything? We must also start the game with everything, other than the blunderbuss(?), including all the ships? This seems crazy.

  • @ark-851225141 ee? You bought something you don't know? Thats childish behaviour.

Devs said it many times there won't be any DMG/DEF upgrades. Only cosmetics. Just watch youtube.com/seaofthieves video about progression system.

  • @avecrux Huh? I haven't purchased the game. Just an insider. There certainly isn't enough released about the game for me to make a pre-order,

On this forum I have seen others mention items will be available, typically in reference to the video Becoming a Pirate Legend. After watching the video though there is no mention of other items/upgrades lol.

Mmm. Well, plenty to ponder for now. As it stands I will be getting the game pass and test the game out prior to purchase.

  • @ark-851225141 so what "founder" stands for?

  • @avecrux Participation in Alpha tests.

  • @avecrux Here is more information about the groups / badges:

    https://www.seaofthieves.com/forum/topic/25338/the-forum-user-groups

  • That's stupid, any game with a full price of 60-70€ should NOT have microtransactions.

If you want to add microtransactions the game should be free or with a maximum cost of 20€, this is ridiculous and it will surely affect negatively my buy or not decision.

  • @porkin5 Not even that, SoT focuses on cosmetics, there is no leveling just cosmetics, the ability to pay for them is equivalent to the ability to pay 20-40$ to start with a maxed out character in an MMO.

  • I realy hope Rare makes a statement about this.
I was SO HYPED for SoT. but after seeing this even my hype is going down.

  • To be honest I am a little worried now about this....you suggest it is only cosmetics but I have seen enough games who said the same and in the end there were still strong boni for buying them (example Black Deserts "cosmetic" costumes and pets.... :/ )
I dont mind microtransactions but from experience not many will buy them if there are really just cosmetics so they wont make enough money out of this.
So most likely there will be ingame "progression" boni that others may not have....hopefully they can balance it good enough so they wont be overpowered or unfair for not paying players :/

  • @wturok We need to wait and hop rare comes with a statement.
If you want and app/game and have the option of buying DLC in game it says microtransactions so it coud be just that.

lets hope for the best :)

  • @wturok This shouldn't come as a huge surprise considering a pre-order gets you some pretty decent cosmetics, although I would call that a MACRO-transaction lol.

  • I hope we're unable to buy the same items in the shops with micro transactions, or other hard earned cosmetics. Considering from what we know, cosmetics are the only 'upgrades' so it would be a huge blow to the game, in a negative way if they did include this. Micro transactions are fine by me, if they're separate from the items earned in game.
I would also hate to see purchasable Gold, that would be a little frustrating.

Also I think there are other posts focused on micro transactions somewhere on the forums, I just can't remember where.

  • The Black Dog set from preordering is probably a unique set that you can't get from in-game or microtransactions (hopefully anyhow, else it kinda takes away the point of it being a pre-order bonus).

I am expecting microtransactions to be items with a certain look.

I am expecting in-game items to be items that can only be acquired in-game (i.e. not from microtransactions at all) and that in-game items will include unique rewards based on achievements through gameplay (for example getting a pirate hat stylized to be a kraken as a reward for defeating the kraken).

I am also expecting that microtransaction items will be less unique than in-game items simply because of the fact that microtransaction items will be much more available and easy for players to buy and equip, whereas the in-game items (at least the more rare / expensive ones) would be seen less in the game due to being harder to get (requires more effort and time put into actual gameplay).

Those are my expectations at least.

I would be disappointed if I spent hours in the game and finally defeated a kraken, only to see some random I_R_Pirate_001 player rolling past me with 1 hour played and wearing the same kraken-hat that I got from spending 100 hours and losing against 20 krakens before I finally defeated the 21st one and won the hat.

  • Although I don't like micro-transactions, I'm trying to think for both sides of the story here; there are many people, mainly those working 9-5 jobs who have very little time to earn things through playtime and would much rather be able to purchase in-game items with real money so they could keep up with the crowd. There is a lot of stigma around "Pay to plays" and I share some of that stigma as well; in reality these people used micro-transactions to better their experience for the short time they were able to play... or they could be twelve year old kids with their mum's credit card. Either way it's their money and they can do what they want with it, if they want to ruin their experience by purchasing items rather than earning them, then by all means, it's not my business to tell others what they do with their money. I have trust in Rare to make a system which allows players to purchase cosmetics with real life money but nothing more! I draw the line at people gaining advantages through micro-transactions. I hope everyone reading this has a good day/night and catch you guys later.

  • I'm fine with micro-transactions if:

    • They'll only add cosmetic items and not "functional" ones
    • Said items could be also bought with in-game currency (ex: a 5 euro set could be obtained by MTs or by, let's say, 5,000 coins in-game).
    • MTs won't reward you with unique and rare items that normale players can obtain achieving certain goals or overcoming certain challenges.
  • I guess we all knew that micro transactions were there at the end. I'm fine with them as long they are just cosmetic (and they will be) and you ca distinguish them in game. I will be disappointed if players can by game gold with real money but i'm sure thats no the case. I'm sure they will also sell the chance to change your pirate aspect, and i'm absolutely fine with it :)

  • @ark-851225141 Your logic doesn't really make sense and I find you really hard to believe if I'm being honest.... You might be very disappointed at full release then because the devs have said several times that they want the game to be a level playing field......
Firstly. you are a founder and a insider yet you really don't know much about the game? You should be more informed than us insiders since you partook in the tech Alpha as you've mentioned.....
Secondly. You do realize that once you have the game pass you have full access to the game(/games) on the list of games of the game pass therefore you do not need to buy said game..... So like if game A is on the game pass you do not to buy game a but say Game isn't on the game pass you would need to buy said game B. Hopefully that makes sense to you...
Thirdly. You got the wrong video its in the progression podcast which you can find here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V9XZe5mpQWA&index=3&list=PL51podOC3ZN3s0tzt0YdyFRlbmxgaiGsM

I might have put the wrong podcast up above but nevertheless I really didn't want to search each podcast for it so if you truly want to find out the progression and learn things about the game you can watch them yourself here:

I totally agree with you. I would find it totally unfair if that one hat I never could get because it's only in the online shop.
But am I the only one how thinks that an cosmetic Items Shop doesn't makes sense for this Game?
Because the progress System is obviously driven by getting new cosmetics Items (and a few weapons)
    Something feels very wrong here...

I hope this too. Otherwise the Media will get crazy about this topic with click bait half information news what will damage Sea of Thieves reputation massively.
@khaleesibot lift the fog about this topic!

  • Even if micro-transaction's are "only cosmetic" it is a problem. Rare has said specificially that the way you look helps determine your progression and your legend. Therefore, I can purchase part of my progression, which ultimately reduces the value of in-game accomplishments greatly.

I can't believe I'm saying this, but I would much prefer a steady diet of DLC's as it fits better with the philosophy of this game (imo).

  • I agree with a pay to win problem, although the experienced player will just play better and have more fun than the guy who just pay for stuff.

Microtransactions is something that I personally don't care much, as long as they are just time savers, I'll be fine with it.

I imagine that we will see gold or a premium currency being selling so the one that pay real money will just be able to get some new clothes without putting to much effort in getting stuff done.

  • @xx-mirth-xx That's not "entirely" true. Your in-game look is important, true, but we already know there will be some kind of "commendations" in-game, which you can only obtain by playing and achieving goals. I bet these commendations will have a big role in the Progression System, so not everything is about "how you look".

  • @arcangelo87 While you're probably right my concern comes from how visible your legend is.

It's very obvious when I'm wearing the admiral outfit, or holding up the Order of Souls lantern - these show off that I've completed something in the game.

Unless my commendation is hanging over my head the entire game (which sounds awkward), it will be a chore to see another players progression. This is why the way you look is incredibly important in this game.

  • @xx-mirth-xx
Which is why commendations are, likely, one of the ways to earn titles. Titles have been mentioned to be one of the ways players can customize their character.
