So I decided to do a small study thing on peg legs and hooks for hands... and I came up with a few things that should be very well considered.
-
Both have long straps.
Of course, we all think these hooks and legs are strapped or nailed onto the stump, right? Well.... no. Doing some research, and turns out that the straps used for the hook goes up the arm and usually to the other shoulder. the Leg straps goes up the leg and maybe to your hips. Also, they use padding or cotton to soften said cups for ease of comfort.

The stumps of arms and legs would usually be painful.
From what I have read, the amputations performed left the stumps in a way that would be nothing more than unbearable and painful for the rest of their lives. Especially the leg, putting all your weight on it. I theorize it's due to the amputations not folding the flesh and connecting the proper blood veins properly. Sure, the cotton padding was in place but didn't help ease the pain. Not a very good way to sail... -
Rotating the hook as a hand.
this one is more interesting for me, because I wondered how the hook was rotated around the hand as if it were a hand. But... looking at the very first photo on this, you can see that there very well could be a sleeve under the main contraption that went on the forearm, and the hook is able to swivel without doing much to impede on the main device holding it in. That is more believable than most pirate hook fantasy pirate thingies out there. -
If the hook is advanced enough, maybe it could help with defending.
(Around 6:20)
The hook, if properly attached, the stump properly made to where it won't hurt, and the hook could swivel, it could be very effective with parrying or even disarming other attackers. The hook could easily hook around the blade of the opponents sword, and either catch it or use your sword to disarm them. (Mainly rapier and dagger techniques with sword and hook. maybe lol)
This is mainly both fun fact, and hoping Rare sees this and maybe adds a way for straps to be shown holding the hook in place, like under a jacket or legwear.
