Few more cool "eye candy" feature ideas.

  • Hi again you all!

I hoarded my ideas for new features that I'd like to see and this is what I came up with this time...

    • Global God Rays
Few games have this system of light shafts implemented and even fewer I know of but some games, instead of showing the light shafts only while you're looking directly at the sun and therefore being directly linked to your position, have them everywhere like in real life and visible from all sides, not just directly "up front".
That may seem like a small detail, but it makes for a huge difference. It means you get to see light comming through a small hole at the top of a completely dark cave, even if you cant see the hole itself. This can be seen in Minecraft Shader mods and also S.T.A.L.K.E.R games and it looks really great IMO. Coolest thing about this in SoT would be the sun shafts coming from little holes between the clouds. Which isn't possible in the other games because clouds are not an actual 3d thingy... So yea.
    • Tree, Grass, Seaweed physics
I'd also like to see additional vegetation physics. Trees moving in the wind just like in the Witcher 3, Grass (or something similar to reed?) similar to the one in TheHunter, and Seaweed reacting to the player just like in Abzu.

    • Mass (flocking/swarm) AI for birds and fish
This is pretty much something only Abzu does so far (at least to my knowledge) and it really looks beautiful. One Valve employee made a similar thing for "bat" swarm in the air and there are similar demo features to be found online.
    • Smoke, fire sparks, mass particle physics (physx like)
As seen in many games before (usually Nvidia Physx) this can look really nice and add another level to the already beautiful graphics of SoT. I did talk about this in my previous posts but still think i should recap it here too. Anyway... smoke that reacts to the wind (Dark Void / Crysis 3), fire sparks (Warframe), wood pieces falling off when ship gets hit or different "magic" effects (Borderlands 2). All that and more would be very appreciated by people like me.

    • Completely pitch black caves
Not many things can get the heart beating while gaming as not being able to see what's happening around you. Sadly not many games feature "complete" darkness (unless they are horror games). I think SoT could however profit of this feature, especially by making the streams much funnier.

Now one lastt thing I'd like to say is that for all the special physics, god rays and such effects, I'd like to see a on/off button. So all the weaker machines could still run the game properly.
That's it for now, so what do you think? Unnecessary, cool or both? Also I'd really like to hear from someone in business how hardware demanding are these things. Especially global god rays and volumetric smoke effects (As I really like them but see them very rarely in other games). Cya all later!

  • @retto-elbaroda great ideas, I hope all are added

  • @dark-shadow9056 Thank you and... I posted so many already that even if one of them was added, I'd be the happiest pie rat on the high seas!

  • @retto-elbaroda

I really like the idea of "Completely pitch black caves" would add a new level to exploring and give another use for the lantern. I could see some good shock and aww monuments.

  • @rgbknights definitely

  • @rgbknights Exactly. Some of my best gaming memories come from pitch black areas. Gothic 3 with one small dark cave, the tunnel to the Pripyat in Stalker COP or the underground elevator in HL2 EP1... Even Minecraft... Pls add!

  • @retto-elbaroda I know that feeling, mate :D

  • A lot of this can already be seen in the game's trailers (or if you have played the Alpha as a Founder), from light filtering through the atmosphere (god rays) both above and under water, to foliage reacting to players as they run through it, to weather and wind reacting to particles and surfaces (they confirmed that rain will seep through your ship to the lower decks in one of the videos), to much more.

And more is added and layered with almost every build.

  • @jcmdeadpool One day... Maybe! :D

  • @knightx13 I sure have seen and played the alpha and know what you're referring to.
But there are some mild differences (I believe?) in what I'm posting about here.
The god rays I believe work similarly as in Crysis 1 I believe, where you can pretty much only notice them while looking directly (or nearly directly) into the sun and an object covers part of it. Only then they appear. If I am mistaken here, and just wasn't able to notice them properly from the side (which is possible as there isn't as much "density" to be seen), I'd like to have them a little more noticeable.
Foliage reacting to the players and win is amazing. At least the players/skeletons part. The wind moves the trees slightly but again, I think it could be much more of bending (that's also why I pointed out Witcher 3, since the game does it incredibly well), like it tends to be IRL in strong winds. And the grass is on the list simply because it stays down in a very realistic matter in TheHunter. Water physics is amazing and I love it. I am kinda a sucker for all these pretty (and not really game changing) details so I just have some hopes to see them at their best in my fave game. I do hope Rare will read on some of these posts as I really would love to see it added.
Anyway, yes, lots of it is already in, but that only gives me more of a hope that maybe a slight change could actually make it into the game. Especially if they make so much difference in the end.

  • BTW. One more thing I forgot to add. It's amazing but pretty much impossible I guess :D. Still... Would be amazing.
