This game looks like a lot of fun so I'm definitely going to try. One thing that stood out to me, though, after watching gameplay videos, is that PvP seems too flippant. Don't get me wrong. I want to see a lot of it ingame, but my concern is that the ghost ship death system allows players to come back to the fight too soon. I can't think of anything more lame than needing to kill the same crew over and over again in order to complete missions. Furthermore, if death penalties carry a little more weight, players will likely be more catious in their actions, adding depth to everyone's playstyle, even those who'd choose to avoid PvP combat as much as possible. Trust me, how this is handled is likely to make or break this game. I hope devs are listening.
Make PvP more meaningful.
@glad-komrad me and my friend spoke about this.
I do agree that it is slightly annoying that you jump on a ship, kill 2-3ppl but the last one is juking around just to buy time, then the rest of the crew is back up and ofc if you die, you're back at your ship and back at square one.
I think it would be cool if they did so if someone dies, they cant respawn unless a crew member revive them.1 player dies, someone in the team has to hold "interact" on that player for 10s or something and that opens up the respawn timer or something like that.
PvP needs to be more skilled based to begin with. It is purely a numbers game and somewhat luck. Slash and dash mostly.
In terms of the boat, it would be great if crew members could revive their fallen maties after a countdown. If you’re solo, it is timed and you’re released upon the countdown completing.
I hate to be a contrarian, but I wish I could down vote every comment except the "Make it Fun" comment on this thread lol
The system works and there is a lot of skill that goes into PvP right now, the only time there isn't it seems is when players who are unfamiliar with the mechanics or are new to the game are playing.... then it's like watching toddlers try to pull off WWE Moves. When 2 teams of experienced Crews come up against each other there are tactics and sailing techniques that are in place and set in motion that far out pace anything I've seen lately.... just saying.
@TheDeadJester First of all, you honestly sound a bit condescending with the toddler comment. Not everyone got a chance to test the game for a year plus. That does not make you a better player or give you the right critisize those novice to the game.
The PvP in the game is far from stellar at this point. It may be dialed in when it comes to sailing. However, hand-to-hand combat needs some changing. I believe that is what people are referring to in this post.
By the way, I am the CEO of early childhood centers. I make a good living working with toddlers.
The only change I can see them making to the death mechanics is that if you die multiple times consecutively that you stay on the ferry slightly longer each time. Any additional punishment might destroy something very important about SoT, it aims to be fun and lighthearted.
Not a game where if your crewmate dies, you're totally and utterly screwed. Because if that happens, the toxicity of the community will likely increase tenfold. This game should never become like Overwatch or CS;GO, where one death at the wrong time can make or break your chance at success. That'll only harm the community, in my eyes.
@glad-komrad do you even know the exact respawn time? What would be the perfect respawn time in your opinion?
@absorbedgecko90 i mean changing the respawn rate wouldnt make it a "hardcore pvp" game, the problem now imo is that theres literally no point in boarding.
You will have a higher chance to steal someones treasure if you sink them.
Boarding should be a big thing in a pirate game, but now the only reason to board another ship is to shoot down the person repairing the ship.I dont want em to make it a hardcore pvp game, keep it casual but atm the boarding "feature" is useless.
@toffeldjuret
I wouldn't say no point or useless. Keeping a crew from repairing their ship, taking their resources, and taking their treasure before the ship sinks are all very good reasons to board another ship. If they have a lot of treasure, sinking the ship might actually be a counter-productive move as the treasure will eventually sink if it floats in the water too long.Furthermore, in my experience, boarding is probably the most efficient way to ensure a ship will sink. You don't even need to waste cannonballs, just board their ship, kill the crew and steer it into a rock/island.
@toffeldjuret of course boarding should be rewarded, maybe there should be some sort of enter-bridges or a way to disable enemy cannons by boarding. But by just increasing the respawn time there wouldn't be more boarding, because the attacker can be killed also.

Would be nice to be able to disable cannons while on-board or cut the sails, or something of that nature to pay off the risk!
@absorbedgecko90 I have been timing the re spawn rate the last several times I've played and sometimes I think that it is a bit too long.
If you are playing solo or in a crew of 2 and come in contact with a crew of 4 it can be very hard to do anything if they get the upper hand due to pure numbers.
It would be interesting if the respawn rate was adjusted based on the size of your crew. For instance (these are just arbitrary numbers here), a crew of two has a respawn of 30 seconds, crew of 3 is 45, crew of 4 is 60. I wonder how that would change things?
It may provide a different approach to PvP depending on the person, their play style, and the crew.
Rare has mentioned on a few occasions that returning to the land of the living from the Ferry will require doing tasks for its Captain. They've also talked about being able to take control of another ship, stopping the owners from respawning on it. If these make it into the game it'll definitely change up how players treat death to some extent.
@daimyo-dorima That sounds so much better. I'm definitely thinking it'd be best if the defeated crew is tasked with something else, rather than incentified to immediately bind rush opponents that just got the best of them seconds ago.

I think the whole balance idea to the crew sizes is the speed of the ship but it also might be a good idea to add somewhat of a difference in respawn speed but I think a 30s difference between 2 and 4 crew members is too drastic if it was 30s for 2 40s for 3 and 4 that would still make a difference in either escaping or winning a fight

Being able to stop players from respawning on the ship would be good if all players were already defeated like maybe have them spawn in the water next to the ship and have to fight their way back on to save their treasure/ship
@booky06 You may very well be right. I just threw some numbers out there. The timers and exact numbers would probably have to be tested and balanced.
This might be a mute point depending on what Rare adds with the whole "doing tasks on the ferry in order to return to the living"
I’ve been reading Rare comments with great interest and I believe that those of us who have been looking for that one special game where you can sit down and know you are going to have fun is here. Even when you die, which is very unusual. I also believe that while you will add to all weapons, clothing, and some strange stuff, you will still have no major advantage over a new player...who, like you, just wants to have fun, meet great people, laugh out loud, and looks forward to the next time they play. ..without concern that some have been playing for months and have some great advantage.
This would not be that highly competitive game. But that, I believe, will put this in that AAA category of games. Highly unique, with a very large following.
I have no inside infomation to support the above. Perhaps it’s just a real desire on my part.
Hahaha If you pat yourself on the back any harder there you might need a sling.
Pointing out your a CEO and trying to knock me down and discount my opinion because of my experience in the game while taking my metaphor as a word for word literal comment is silly... especially for someone claiming to be a CEO.
What do I know though? I'm no CEO Hahahahahahahaha
@TheDeadJesterP It is not a claim but rather reality and a fact. I did not knockdown your experience. I respectfully disagreed with a sense of humor rather than being rude. I never attacked you personally.
I pointed out that I am a CEO since you took it upon yourself to talk down to those who are not veterans to the game with your toddler comment. I simply validated my knowledge over yours as you so did to others. It was just by chance that your unkind comment pertained to the industry I am a CEO in.
You got snide with others and it burnt you then and now. I actually got a great Christmas card from my staff thanking me for my leadership! Can we skip the part where you say, “ good for you.” It is good for my family and I.
