More "Community Focused" Loots

  • I have always enjoyed hunting commendations in Sea of Thieves, but one specific type has always stood out to me: The Humble Gift/Generous Gift commendations. These require you to "give" loot to other crews, which forces players out of their shells to negotiate, trade, or bribe their way into a peaceful interaction.

Currently, these "forced social" interactions are too rare. I believe the game would benefit from a new item designed specifically to encourage parley and diplomacy.

    I'm suggesting: The Merchant Petition
This would be a new type of treasure (similar to a Logbook or a Merchant Manifest).

Base Value: Very low (e.g., 500 Gold).

The Mechanic: The item has several "Signature Slots." To increase it's value, a member of a different crew must interact with the item (while it's in your hand, or on the ground) to "Sign" it. The more people sign the Petition, the more it's value increases, but the more it would also be worth to steal it !

The item’s worth increases exponentially with every signature from a unique player. A Petition carrying 5 or 6 signatures would yield a massive payout of Gold and Reputation, turning a fully manned Galleon into a high-stakes objective -approaching them offers the biggest reward, but carries the greatest risk of being attacked and sunk.

    Proposed Commendations
To encourage players to engage with this mechanic, I also suggest to add attached commendations:

The Pen is Mightier: Sell a Petition with at least 3 signatures from different players.
Aggressive Negotiations: Sell a Petition that was originally started by another crew (stolen).
Diplomatic Immunity: Sell a "Full" Petition (6 signatures maybe ?).
International Relations: Sign a Petition carried by a crew flying the Reaper’s Mark.

I'm convinced this kind of loot would add a lot of fun and surprise to PvP encounters.
Unlike standard loot, you can't just grind this alone. It pushes players to use their speaking trumpets, text chat, and emotes. It creates "organic" moments where you have to decide: "Do I trust this crew enough to let them board and sign my paper, or is this a trap?"

Edit: I do think the merchant faction badly needs a bit of love, maybe this could be part of it ?

  • Like the gifts before. They be done within first week and those who came later will be back to square one.

    Nobody wanting to do them.

  • @burnbacon Well, I came "after", and it was a blast to go after crews to give them stuff.

Most people are plaisantly surprise when a ship coming their way isn't just two swabies wanting to fight for no reason.

  • @arias1101

I was able to do them years ago simply by going around killing island captains and digging up their loot. If I couldn't find another crew to sell my gift for me, I'd leave it at reapers. It was a slow process, but I got it done. Imagine my surprise when I opened a mega-stash ashen garrison to see 5 of them there. So, while not common to see, it's still possible to do. To increase your chances of another player selling it for you (if you leave it at Reapers), I'd suggest leaving a high-value treasure item next to it, to thank the person selling it for you. Doing that made it much more successful for me.

  • @europa4033 It was fun for us to do it by simply going to talk to people, I wish there were more things like these.
