Rethinking the 'Big Doubloon Reset'

  • PART ONE - Doubloons and Silver

    Today's announcement of the 'Big Doubloon Reset' has certainly ruffled the feathers of the Sea of Thieves community, myself included. Whilst yes, I do understand what Rare is trying to do here - that been returning Doubloons to their original purpose of been a limited time currency that's exchangeable for time limited cosmetics - I believe there's a much simpler and easier fix that allows people to retain their Doubloons whilst still having a limited-time event currency, that been introducing a new currency, Silver.

    In my mind, there's 2 ways Silver could be handled;

    1. Becoming the new limited-time event currency, leaving Doubloons untouched
    2. Doubloons are converted to Silver, meaning that Doubloons will still be tied to the Bilge Rats and their limited-time events AND reset to zero, but items like Ritual Skulls or Reapers Chests will award Silver instead of Doubloons, and items in the shop that cost Doubloons (say, the Aristocrat Set) will instead cost Silver to reflect the changes.

    The pricing of items related to Doubloons also needs to be rethought. Making returning Season Pass cosmetics cost 600 Doubloons each is unreasonable, or returning Pirate Legend items be 2000 Doubloons is beyond ridiculous, especially considering Doubloons are hard enough to come by on the Sea.

    PART TWO - Limited Time cosmetics

    In the 'Great Doubloon Reset' video, Drew mentions how certain time-limited cosmetics will be returning, such as the Bone Crusher ship-set. I believe the community needs better transparency about which year one/limited-time cosmetics will be returning for the Black Market. As someone who's not a fan of FOMO, I do understand the need for some cosmetics (like the Hungering Deep set) to stay time-limited, however other items (like the Forsaken Ashes set) should return, considering most of the other cosmetics related to the set, such as clothing, equipment, and some ship cosmetics are available. I do also think these returning items should have some commendations locking them, like completing Master Devil's Voyager for the Forsaken Ashes set (if it returns)

    Better still, a bigger focus should be made in releasing decent Outpost drops instead of re-releasing time limited cosmetics. I believe one of the main reasons the limited-time cosmetics are looked back on fondly is because of how simplistic yet pirate-y they looked. Take the Bone Crusher ship-set, its a perfect blend of simple yet pirate-y looking cosmetics, given that skulls are associated with pirates (and the event it was tied too was related to crushing the Skeleton Fleets), whilst still having that fantasy Sea of Thieves element sprinkled in with the Kraken skull figurehead. Given the amount of cosmetics only seen in promo material and leaked online, we shouldn't have this cosmetic drought, but here we are.

    PART 3 - Other thoughts

    A feedback thread or Google Form should be released so the community can give their thoughts on these potential changes. Whilst I do agree that we need a limited-time currency, resetting Doubloons is the wrong way to go around this.

    Potentially have the Seapost Vendors sell old Twitch Drop sets (like the Stalwart Sea-dog set, or the Eastern Winds Ruby sets) for a small chunk of Doubloons to give them a use, or have a limited amount of returning Twitch Drop cosmetics that you can buy from them every other day, incentivizing players to visit the Seaposts.

    If you don't want to change Doubloon pricing, then make it so you can purchase Doubloons for Gold, meaning players have a gold sink for cosmetics in the Outpost Shops (tbh, this is a controversial opinion)

    Rare, please do the right thing here, reconsider this potential Reset and listen to the community. Its not too late to change things.
