I am 100% convinced: The Cap’n is James Hook
Ever since the last Orb stream, I've been digging deep into the lore of Sea of Thieves, Pirates of the Caribbean, and even Peter Pan. From Books, Tall Tales, Podcasts, Wikis, and Movies. And I've compiled as much evidence as I could find. I can now confidently say that the mysterious "Cap’n" of Sea of Thieves is James T. Hook or Captain Hook. While this is still speculation, it's built on a long consistent chain of lore that connects these worlds in ways that when laid out, feel far too intentional to dismiss or chalk up as a coincidence.
I also want to add a disclaimer before I present everything, I’m not the first person to suggest Captain Hook could appear in Sea of Thieves, but I do have some evidence here I’ve yet to see anyone talk about in their own Hook theories.
A shared canon makes this possible
Because Pirates of the Caribbean is canon in Sea of Thieves (thanks to the Disney crossover "A Pirate’s Life") we already know any character(s) from POTC can/do exist in Sea of Thieves. Jack Sparrow, Barbossa, Davy Jones, Calypso, Black Dog Briar, etc. are all proof of that. Whether or not they’ve appeared on screen or in game. On top of that, Mike Chapman has said on a podcast that the Sea of Thieves does in fact exist in our world, near the Bermuda Triangle. Also recently confirmed during the orb stream when we were given some coordinates [18.767303 N, -64.803130 W] This means people can enter and leave the Sea of Thieves, without breaking lore. It's just a matter of how they do so that is the question. That point becomes important later.
Black Dog Briar and Pendragon, are searching for "The Cap’n"
As I am writing this, we now know from the orb stream that Black Dog Briar is actively working with Sir Arthur Pendragon in the Sea of the Damned to locate the Cap’n. We also know that Black Dog Briar was the first mate to Hector Barbossa aboard The Wicked Wеnch, the same ship that would later become the Black Pearl, before being set ablaze and sunk by Cutler Beckett’s East India Trading Company after Jack Sparrow refused to transport slaves "People aren't cargo, mate" and was then branded a pirate. They are seemingly searching aboard a manifested version of the Wicked Wеnch, formed from Briar’s own memories in the Sea of the Damned. This is where this theory stops being abstract and starts becoming very specific. This next evidence is what really shocked me and I have yet to see anyone mention this…
James Hook is ALREADY canon in the POTC universe
In “The Price of Freedom” (a 2011 prequel novel detailing Jack Sparrow’s early years), a pirate named "James" is discussed by Captain Teague, (Jack Sparrows father and keeper of the Pirate Code) and Don Rafael, a Spanish Pirate Lord of the Caribbean. This "James" character: Mysteriously disappears for several years, then returns missing his left hand, replaced by a hook, does not appear to have aged a day, and developed a fear and hatred of children. At first glance, this seems like a fun nod to the character since both properties are owned by Disney, who we already know is actively working with Rare. But I did some more digging, and it turns out the author, Ann C. Crispin, explicitly confirmed that this “James” is the same James Hook from Peter Pan. This officially ties POTC Hook and Peter Pan Hook into the same person. That means Captain Hook is already part of the same lore Sea of Thieves is drawing from when it comes to Pirates of the Caribbean, and can be woven into Sea of Thieves with stories like Flameheart, Ramsey, the GMU, or the Dark Brethren.
How Hook Reached Neverland (and Disappeared)
So, how can the same Captain Hook be in both the regular world of Pirates of the Caribbean, yet also appear in Neverland? The answer comes from "The Pirate Fairy" (Disney). In this film, we see a younger James Hook manipulating a fairy named Zarina into giving him pixie dust so he can sail freely. After betraying her, they fight, and Zarina ultimately takes the dust back, removing his ship’s ability to fly. Hook becomes stranded just off Neverland’s shores, where he is eventually rescued by Mr. Smee aboard Hook’s ship. If this timeline holds, then by the time of the 1953 Peter Pan film, Hook has been trapped in Neverland for several years, probably decades, locked in constant conflict with Peter Pan and the Lost Boys. And at some point having his hand cut off and fed to the crocodile, cementing his fear of children. I know this is a movie made for kids, but it’s entirely possible that at some point he would have come across pixie dust that would have aided him in his journey to Neverland, either the Golden Key or something similar.
1953 Peter Pan - "A Pirates Life" Song
After Peter takes Wendy and her brothers flying, it cuts to an establishing shot of Neverland, with a sea shanty being sung by The Cap'n's Crew aboard the Jolly Roger. The crew even has a sketch of the Cap’n on a door and throws daggers at it. The song is also coincidentally also named "A Pirates Life" and has some interesting lyrics: “Ooh! A pirate's life is a wonderful life They never bury your bones For when it’s all over, a jolly sea rover Drops in on his friend, Davy Jones Ooh! His very good friend, Davy Jones” This is a dead giveaway that there is some kind of relationship between Captain Hook and Davy Jones. And it makes sense if they knew each other or met during the First Brethren Court, when Jones was still human and just betrayed by the sea goddess Calypso. And worked with the Brethren, binding her into the mortal form of Tia Dalma using nine Pieces of Eight, allowing the Pirate Lords to control the seas. We know they both were alive during this time to witness the first Court, and James Hook at this point was already an established pirate, so it makes sense he would at least be present there.
Hook’s Movements, World Travel, & The Golden Key
In the early 17th century, James made at least one voyage across the Indian Ocean, during which his crew recovered a half-dead sailor from the water. Before dying, the man claimed his ship had been destroyed by a pirate vessel flying the red flag of no quarter. After this encounter, James sailed to Portugal, where he later met Don Rafael in Oporto. While dining in a tavern, James told the story to Don Rafael, who would later repeat to the pirate lords at Shipwreck Cove to the Brethren Court.
After these events, James sailed off on further ventures, and once again disappeared from the known world. And while it's not specifically stated, he most likely went back to Neverland. He is not confined to Neverland either. He is able to move freely between realms. We know this from the movie Return to Neverland (2002), where Captain Hook is shown physically traveling from Neverland to London to kidnap Jane Darling, Wendy’s daughter, and brings her back to use as bait for Peter Pan. This is a literal, on screen example of Hook moving freely between worlds or realms. This directly shows once again that Hook can vanish from the Pirates of the Caribbean world after being present at Shipwreck Cove during the First Court, spend years in Neverland, Encounter Don Rafael and Captain Teague many years later, all without aging a day, and later re-enter the wider world whether in London, Portugal, or even the Sea of Thieves, without violating any established lore.
But how does he do this? Well at this point, it’s entirely possible that Hook already possessed, or later acquired, the Golden Key described in A Pirate’s Life Tall Tales in Sea of Thieves: “The greatest fortune a pirate could hope for. A key to countless seas.” It’s unknown where or when the Golden Key was made, but it somehow came into the Cap'n's possession. And using it, he reached the Pirates of the Caribbean world, found the resurrected Davy Jones after the events of POTC 5, stole his heart, and left Jones to guard the Key within a newly built fortress. And in Peter Pan lore, pixie dust allows inter-world travel. It’s how Peter is able to reach London from Neverland and how the Jolly Roger gets coated in gold and can fly. The EXACT same way the Black Pearl turned gold to exit the Sea of Thieves at the end of the Pirates Life Tall Tales. It’s entirely plausible that the Golden Key is powered by pixie dust or is even a trapped pixie/fairy.
Sea of Thieves in Game Evidence
During the Dark Brethren Tall Tale, we see a meeting room for the Dark Brethren. Wanda, Duke, Davy Jones, and the Gold Hoarder are all present, and an empty chair sits at the head of the table. This chair is unlike all the others, it has deep scratches in the left armrest, the same place a hook would be digging in if it were on the Cap'n's left hand... On the table in the same room, we see dual cigar burn marks on the map. So whoever was smoking prefers to use a double cigar holder. The same one used by Captain Hook in both the Disney movies, and in other Hook media. He was also the original captain of the Burning Blade, when it was called "The Golden Blade". Flameheart heard about this ship of his, and joined the crew. However, after joining his crew for a time, Flameheart eventually mutinied against the Cap'n and marooned him on an unknown island where the Cap'n would construct a camp inside a cave several hundreds of feet deep. And in the novel "Tales from the Sea of Thieves" the crew of the Silver Blade had a cursed chest they were bringing to an old woman. When their ship sank, they swam to the nearest island which happened to be the same island where the Cap'n had constructed his camp. After the crew arrived on the island, the crew found his cursed golden chalice full of unending, drinkable water; drinking from which turned Flameheart Jr. and his crew into skeletons. His motivation for doing this is unknown. Because he also turned himself into a skeleton lord for some unknown reason.
Captain James Hook as a villain
He currently fits The Cap'n better than any other known character. I don’t think we are going to get exactly Disney’s captain hook, but rather an amalgamation between multiple Captain Hook varients from various media. His personality is manipulative, vengeful, calculating, and operating from the shadows. Yet he is also a little silly, which fits the Sea of Thieves charm the game has. (At least the Disney Hook does) This all fits the story far better than your typical video game villain could. And if done right, could be one of gaming's best crossover events ever.
Let me know what you all think, and if there is anything that contradicts or challenges this theory, I'd love for us all to go through what we can find to see if this is what will likely play out when the Cap'n gets introduced!
