Feedback about the Hourglass rewards + 1 Hourglass feature

  • This post might be me venting a little, sorry.

Currently, the leveling experience in this gamemode feels too grindy. To give some background: I (+ some friends) spent some 30 hours in Hourglass these past few months (Counting PVP mode on) while leveling up just about 30 levels. I am Flameheart faction level 46, my friend is 56.
At current rate it seems in order to reach lvl 100 we need to spenf around 100 hours in-game. Consider also, that this is the time spent only on Hourglass. There's also hundreds of achievements to do, other companies to level up etc. Personally, that feels like too much time demanded by one gamemode.

Here's the kicker: I do not care about curses! Don't wanna be a skeleton or a ghost. The only reason I am doing hourglass is to get access to Flameheart's lair - this is what this topic is about.
It feels really unfair to have to reach level 100 in HG in order to access new game areas.

Therefore, my suggestion is simple: it would ne nice of Rare could lower the level-cap required for players to access Flameheart's lair and Pirate Legends hideout respectfully. For example: make the accessible at HG lvl 75, without changing anything else.

Also, the main problem with the gamemode is that matches can take... any amount of time. It's funny that if you actually meet a crew as skilled as yours you might fight for an hour until supplies end. It's the equal skill-level that would stop you from sinking each other. Needless to say there's ZERO fun in sinking after too prolonged a fight.

Therefore, It'd be great to add a timer to the Hourglass with score winner at the end is the opponent didn't sink. For example: 20 minutes - more than enough to execute all kinds of strategies. It might even be not that hard to implement if the team still has Arena code - that gamemode already had the timer figured out. As for that scoring system - might be possible to rewards players for different actions taken during a fight, that can be decided by Rare.

    That's about it.

The methods proposed above might be doable without spending too many of Rare's resources. I highlighted my 2 main suggestions, sorry if this post is not as polished

    Good day and stuff

Key word here. And until something else is introduced that requires those cures or something. Doubt the most requested curses will become easier.

    Guess: Maybe it’s next anniversary…

  • @burnbacon Well as I pointed out in the text: (Didn't highlight it though)
I just wanna visit new locations, don't even want the curses. Makes the grind feel worse :c

P.S. I mean that Lvl-wall is why Flameheart just sits at Reaper's now. He has a whole lair to himself yet many players will never see it. Rare really shot themselves in the foor there story-wise

It's not unfair, the only use of the place is exclusively the curse, everything else has no practical function.

But, I'm not against being able to open places through PVE companies, it doesn't make much sense that a level 100 in PVP is considered worthy of accessing these places, but a level 500 in Athena or Reaper is not. I mean, in the plot, fighting isn't the only way to help these companies' cause.

So, I would say that these locations should be accessible to players level 100 in PVP or 500 in PVE... maybe level 300 would be enough if you don't want to demand so much, but in my opinion 500.

  • It does feel like too much.

I decided to try and grind it out a little because I want the curse and zoned into the same guy three times in a row. He was better than me and I lost three times in a row. If the population is so low that I get the same person over and over I think maybe something is wrong. If the only guy available for me to play against is good enough to farm me. How am I supposed to do it?

Get better, of course. But it would be nice if my matchmaking rating went down and I ended up playing against someone who was more my skill level.

  • @levsha4ka3536 We do not need every HG fight lasting 20 minutes. I think the way the "play until one sinks" model is fine. They should just make it so a fight is worth more the longer it lasts, like every 5 minutes it gets +50% value. That way a fight never seems "pointless"

Also your feedback on how long it takes to get to level 100 is kinda ignorant. Originally, PL took around that amount of time to unlock. They then made PL easier and added HG. The HG curses are meant to be super long term goals that take a long time to get. I wish they made defending a real way to play HG so you weren't basically restricted to playing HG tho. It'd be nice if PvP with PvE could get you the curses at a similar speed as just doing PvP. To be clear, I don't think there should be anyway to PvE the curse, just make it better to defend so you can be making active progress through the PvP stuff, while doing the PvE.

20-minute timer won't take away from any strategy I know of - so why not? Why should players waste time. Well, the problem with making the fight worth more as it goes might attract unwanted player behavior. Someone spawn camping for instance, if they have the ability... Or just prolonging it by running around.

I know how difficult it was to PL on realease. HG also used to have more players. And game used to have 3 trading companies. There's a lot of stuff in the game that takes a lot of time to unlock and the list just keeps getting bigger with each new update. My point is that HG is just a part of the game. Getting to PL you can do a lot of things, yet HG only has those 1v1 battles.
You actually hit the nail on the head with your comment about defending treasure.

I will point out that I don't propose to change curses in any way but other rewards! Spending example 100 hours in just 1 gamemode in order to get some ship parts or new location access seems overkill. Keep in mind you'll barely make any progress in the rest of the game.

  • I know how difficult it was to PL on realease. HG also used to have more players. And game used to have 3 trading companies.

What I meant was: there's a lot of stuff added to the game over the years and the game itself keeps changing. HG is not the same as in 2022 because it's seemingly low playercount (I'll admit, during weekends there are some people yet I prefer to go outside so I miss those :)) creates new probles for the gamemode, as an example.

  • @levsha4ka3536 20 minutes is a really long time to "commit" to for a fight. Also it'd basically require supping up before hand, beyond the captaincy stuff. To discourage spawn camping or running for "more rewards" you can just make it a linear or sqrt function. Linear means you would always get the same payout to time ratio (you prolly know what it looks like). Sqrt means that you will always get more rewards, but diminishing returns.
