Hit Reg 2018 - 2024

  • So last year they quietly solved one of the biggest problem the game ever faced. The hit reg problem had become mostly resolved. We didn't talk about it much but we noticed how huge it was because the complaints suddenly stopped flowing in from every angle. They deserve credit for that. But, I am curious. What solved it? Was it a simple formula or line of code? Or was it a massive undertaking that was highly complicated?

  • I think the option to see server confirmed hit markers was a literal game changer and I love it. Slight delay? Yes. Worth it knowing you’ve actually hit your target? Absolutely.

  • Hit reg very much still exists

What changed is that people moved their energy and focus over from hit reg to cheating/sus accusations/ and general sot drama.

2024 was a big year for the sot drams.

The main topics are far more what a select few decide they are rather than what a lot of individuals are experiencing in their sessions.

It was so bad 50% of my pistol shots on pve and pvp were regged and now I'd say 90% plus of them actually register. No doubt in my mind huge improvement and same for the sniper rifle. We can't deny it was improved massively can we?

I'm fortunate, I don't hit shots, I don't blame hit reg for my losses, and in my mind this is a game that will have some of those issues no matter what they do. So for me nothing changed.

But I see a lot of pvp footage that includes very accurate shooters and it's clear that at the higher performance levels it still struggles. That's not a criticism because I just think that's to be expected in a game that's full of detailed water and all kinds of things going on.

Also naval reg is pretty horrible compared to how great it used to be.

  • They didn't solve hit registration.

They solved hit confirmation. Arguably, more important, but different nonetheless.

To demonstrate exactly what I mean, go hop on a small island with pigs or chickens and try to sword them. You will get multiple hit registrations (as indicated by the sounds and flinching), but the animal remains alive.

This happens to players and skeletons all the time with every weapon...where a hit clearly happened, but no damage was done.

Again, what they solved was hit confirmations, which allows you to make the more appropriate follow through actions depending on whether you get the confirmation or not.

It's been a tremendous change for the better...but it has certainly highlighted just how bad the delays between server side and client side really are. Before, it was masked by "hit registration"...now it's just "wow these servers and/or this game are in rough shape."

  • I noticed it. Swording animals on island is still horrible. Good observations. But still I'm happy I can shoot phantoms and not see the ripple on their chest from a bullet hole and it actually counts. Odd to me I'm the only one noticing improvement. Phantoms, skeletons, human pirates pistol has been massively improved (at least from what I saw last year until now)

The thing about hit reg is that they did all kinds of work on it and tried different things, said they considered changing it around completely.

Whatever we have is definitely not from a lack of effort on their part. My view is that they likely over focused on it for a while because they were criticized so much from content creators and feedback regs.

I think they have a good record on effort with hit reg, imo.

  • @wolfmanbush Certainly they've made a lot of effort on it, but it's largely been negated (and made worse) by all the content they've simultaneously added.

Hit registration is as good as it's going to get until dramatic host side improvements are made.

Massive credit to Rare for the hit confirmations, though. That has made a world of difference as far as combat goes.

Animals have misplaced hitbox. It is like 50% moved to the front, sticking half way outside. You can see it when pigs run under the water, the bubbles are in front of the pig. This is where hitbox's front is. It is very weird that hitbox for the sound and animation is correct, while hitbox for the dmg is not, but it is what it is. Aim a bit at the front of the animal and "hitreg" will disappear.

Whether the hitbox is wrong on animals or not, it still serves as a great example of what I mean. You "hit" it...it flinches, it squeals or shoots feathers out, but it's not taking damage. That was just the easiest example to visualize to people.

It also happens to skeletons ALL THE TIME. Go do a skull fort and use sword swings only. Count the number of times that it takes more than 3 swipes to kill a Skeleton. It's WAY more than 0 times. Not exaggerating, it's probably 20% of the time or more. It happens to players as well, but it's harder to get a good sample size of.

Hit confirmations are far more reliable and consistent. I can't think of any times since authoritative hit markers were implemented where I got a false hit confirmation.

  • @karkona Uhmmmm, there's literally hit reg on swords now where hits on skeletons don't register, not to mention FULL BLUNDER hit reg. Blunder to the face? oh no you don't. So i'm struggling to realize what you are talking about? XDDD Oh yeah i forgot to mention, food reg being a thing now aswell.

  • @cannarbic
Yeah its a phenomenon around here. Not long ago I made a thread about server performance being bad and most of the community explained they didn't understand what I was talking about. Same for this. I'm always playing a different game I guess. But its good to see how we all see different things and get to put it all together and share the different experiences.
