Attaching a ALLIANCE Flag to JOIN after sinking them?

  • My Idea;

     **Sink a ship in an Alliance = Alliance Flag floats up. Attach this Flag to your boat, *"joining"* the Alliance.**

    The Alliance will continue to operate as per normal;
    So all boats in the alliance will be seen on alliance boat map tables. Selling treasure will result in other alliance crews receiving 50% gold.
    Progress in any alliance-shared commendations will include your boat too.

    Firstly, the boats in the alliance may still get paid 50% for their treasure if they sink to us, should we opt in to the alliance before we sell.
    Assuming the identity of a sunken alliance boat introduces us to a new line of play & strategy.

  • Interesting in theory

    what I'm not into about it is that it literally only negatively affects the least experienced organic alliances.

    alliance servers all talk
    experienced players maintain communication in parties

    this is just another way to mess with inexperienced players when implemented.

    I'm all for people messing with coordinated alliances if that is their thing, experienced alliances. Messing with the most inexperienced alliances only isn't a feature that I find appealing for the game.

    Maybe. But with the possibility that a crew stealing the Alliance flag and then selling loot, then contributes 50% gold to the ship they sunk, I think this may balance that somewhat.

    Potentially. But then noobs usually shoot first and don't know what the alliance flag is or how it works.
    Many aggressive crews are averse to Reaper Emissary, as they'd prefer not to show on the map.

    Opening up any new line of play will always present opportunity. Giving players new strategies was my thought here.

    My original thought was to make it easier for alliances to be formed, which I think this could accomplish. Whether a crew stays in the Alliance may depend on whether they think it's a risk to have their ship position marked on the map for other ships to see. Given this is always true of any organic alliance formed, I'm not sure it actually changes much at all.

    But how are the other crews to know how they got into an alliance ? The ship that sunk might think they'll get half of the value of the loot they gathered and stay in the alliance. Other crews don't have the knowledge, they might want to leave the alliance if they knew the new ship got into it by sinking the crew they allied with and are a ( very ) potential future opponent and not a crew that the sunken crew trusted enough to join the alliance.

    Exactly. :) The alliance now has another ship. Unless you witnessed what happened via line-of-sight, the map table or in a chat group, you've now got reason to be suspicious.

  • The streamer Pace22 would do this....sink a ship, form an alliance, which would allow the losing pirate 50% stake of their treasure instead of going home empty handed. I always liked that he offered that option to the loser.

    I think I like the idea of being able to switch a flag if you have taken another crew's flag. Take it a step further. If you have another crew's flag, instead of turning it in, you have the option of flying it, thus switching emissary choice mid-journey.

  • I like it. It adds a layer to a pretty boring mechanic. It would at least add a slight encouragement to keep your allies close and maybe, I dunno, work together.

    As it stands, most (organic) alliances are formed in passing with no words spoken and not a care in the world for what happens to the other ship(s) in the alliance.

    Alliances generally don't form organically at all, with not even an event with rewards being enough to encourage players to do anything besides just sink every player ship they see. The Alliance system is currently fundamentally flawed because there is no incentive to not betray every Alliance you get in (there's not even any incentive to not attack every single player you see), and why would anyone settle with getting only 50% cut on the loot when they can betray the other crews and get the full value?

    I think the only way the Alliance system could get some new life brought into it is if the risks and rewards for forming Alliances and breaking them were somehow completely overhauled. Currently, the Alliance system is just a completely pointless mechanic because it simply doesn't fit the way most people play the game.

    I'm lucky enough to form alliances regularly enough. But I agree with you, the current Alliance system is lacking for casual interactions.
