I've gotten to know Davy Jones well since playing this game. Perhaps us pirates that spend more time on the sea floor than above the waves could be recognized with some sort of Davy Jones "ill-fated" sails or cosmetic. boats that have sunk many times more than actually lived to return to port.

I love the idea of adding rewards for ''failing'', in this case sinking and dying. This concept is used a lot in games where dying is a big part of the game, especially Rogue type games where you restart over and over, and die a lot inbetween, but unlockling things as you do. It makes faillure much less of a blow, and this is a big issue in SoT (surely one of the biggest contributors to newer players uninstalling or generally getting a sour mindset about the game). If they gathered loot for an hour and get sunk by a more experienced player, but are aware they still got something relatively significant out of it (commendation progress popups and rewards), setting sail again next time will be much more inviting.
Sure this is stuff more experienced players will simply cheese to completion if they want to, but it's purely an addition to retain newer or less skilled players.

Losing an hour's progress is indeed a very bitter experience

Perhaps if only large amounts of loot are lost before earning the cosmetic, the achievement can be earned more organically (As Wolfmanbush would say) and cannot be "cheesed" as easily
It would certainly make losing and sinking more palatable
I do actually like the idea of failure state rewards for a game like this, so having some cosmetics locked behind commendations that relate to that could be pretty good.
Sinking
Treasure Donated (Stolen)Both of those seem like areas where graded commendations with cosmetics behind them could be a boon. Go a step further, and once unlocked they have no further cost to obtain (since being failure state based we can give benefit of the doubt and assume they may not have the funds to further purchase what they unlocked).
Not opposed to this at all.
Ultimately the ill fated are those that challenge themselves in the situation they are in.
It's an honorable fate in a not-so honorable environment.
Sinking a lot is taking on a lot of challenges for the individual.
I don't see it as failure I see it as perseverance so the reward would be to those that try and I like when people try.
Go for it.
