Distinctions feel pointless

  • I remember when getting to 50 in three companies got pirate legend..... now getting these distinctions only get you some rings....

I feel like there should be voyages and stuff locked behind distinctions to make them worth going for I got distinction 5 across the board and it feels kind of unrewarding.

  • That's what I like about it for the game.

It gives people that daily boost of "getting something done" without having any reason to rush it and cheese it for most players of the game.

"I got a little something done" without the overwhelming "I need to get this done" is a pretty big win for SoT, compared to other grinds in the game.

  • Rings that nobody is gonna even look at. (Who stops to look at another pirates rings?)

I much prefer more standout stuff. Maybe as said more voyages, harder voyages to be correct.
Heck I like to unlock something that actually shows :p

  • @wolfmanbush yea but you don't feel rewarded for accomplishing any of it.. . That's my issue at least hitting 50 you had this pirate legend moment....getting 100 and getting your curses in hourglass felt rewarding.....distinctions feels like nothing....even guild distinctions felt like a bust but guilds already felt pointless to do anything with

the thing about the faction levels is that there is little style sacrifice.

whether someone pves, pvps, both, only steals, etc it all contributes to their leveling.

that's what I think the reward is.

I've done a lot of grinds in this game but I haven't grinded the faction levels at all. It's going very slow and it's all good because I am playing how I want to play and any time I turn something in I get a bit of a reward through that, having something count for something.

People often look entirely at the reward and that's just not what adventure is. Adventure is the journey, the little things, mood boosters, sense of accomplishment and progress along the way.

The best work the devs do is when they create something that supports the organic experience and I think they did that with this. In many cases it will be years of a lil' boost for people.

In a game with a lot of style altering grinds I think it's good to have a nice chill leveling grind that supports all styles and long amounts of play time.

It's also exactly what people asked for, they wanted levels to go up and they got that.

  • Distinctions are pointless just like they are pointless in every other game that has this sort of prestige thing. It's a treadmill built on top of content you already completed.

Personally I was fine with the level cap system that only went up when there were new activities to do for that trading company, but there was an overwhelming number of people who wanted this so this is what we got.

  • I really like a couple of the rings and will use them when i get to distinction 5 but they do feel pointless. Practically no one really cares about distinction rings 1, 2, 3 and 4, it's all about the 5th one, ironically the rewards aren't all that distinctive enough to even notice if someone has them outside of maybe the order of souls distinct 5 glow.

For me they should have been curses or outfits that progressed more extravagantly with each distinction, like let's say the reapers for an example:

Distinct 1 gets you a curse where your body is developing the skeleton curse, one of your hands is now bone
Distinct 2 sees it progress to where your entire arm is now bone
Distinct 3 sees it progress to the other hand
Distinct 4 sees it progress to both arms are entirely bones
Distinct 5 sees your legs turn to bone too
It's only the limbs so it's not the same as the hourglass one and it doesn't have any of the customisation the hourglass one does, it would merely block out wearing gloves and boots, you could instantly know that person has a reapers distinction and you could immediately tell the difference between an hourglass skeleton and a reapers bones distinction. If the clothing was actually an issue you could even have it that the distinction also gave a specific outfit that had to be used while displaying the curse at each stage or even just recolours at each distinction.

Gold hoarders could see a curse that could be similar but with jewels encrusted into the skin or acted like the midas touch where everything they held/interacted with was gold while holding/interacting with it

Order of souls could see a curse that had runes etched into the skin maybe some light black smoke emanating from them

Merchants could see a curse that was different, it's hard to give a thematical curse to merchants but you could have a "useful" curse where a clock with the time and date etched into their arm that functions like a real pocket watch, a functional compass etched into their backs and stuff, basically all useful navigational stuff literally etched into your body but you can't really make use of it since you can't see it, cursed to be another crewmates navigational tools. Could even have it just be completely opposite of what is true time / direction, north was south on compass 12 was 6 on clock etc

Athenas could see a curse identical to the reapers only it's ghosts instead of bone

Hunters call could see a curse that develops scales over the body

Or you could have had more jewellery like say an amulet that grew more impressive with each distinction, or scars and tattoos that were clearly tied to certain factions, pretty much any cosmetic could work really.
Stuff that would actually stand out and you could look at someone with a quick glance and say, they have x distinction, instead of practically never noticing someone wearing some rings.
