Will Rare ever revisit Hourglass?

  • Matchmaking is getting ridiculous. I'm not sure how long it's been in the state it is now, but it seems to me like an endless cycle of new players who get stomped by top-tier players with their gold curses, causing them to leave, and the only players left are the same ones who curb-stomped them. I was just doing some casual HG trying to help out some new players, and after two fairly even matches (against the same players, mind you) we have an unfortunate encounter with triumphant sea dogs wearing their allegiance 1000 titles. Among my crew, our levels in the SoF were 3, 6, 20, and 175, myself. Our first match was an example of good matchmaking, the second I would argue not so much since we already beat them in the first round, and then the third.

Some changes that could be implemented to encourage players of all skill levels to join in could include daily rewards, even if it's something small like gold. Additionally, playing a certain number of matches each day could guarantee you one level for each day, even if you don't win all of them. I know this would encourage loss farming, but what matters is that some may be motivated to try and actually win so that they get the winning exp on top of the daily bonus exp. Smaller rewards between levels 1-100 could work too, but that ship has likely sailed. I just hope this mode doesn't end up being worked on for a season, and never touched again outside of bug fixes, because bug fixes aren't going to add longevity to this mode.

  • top-tier players with their gold curses

Im a newbie, and I stomped a Gold Curse player, they werent expecting to be bombed with wraith bombs, x20 ^_^
So this argument about players with Gold Curse are top tier, major players is very bad.

causing them to leave, and the only players left are the same ones who curb-stomped them.

Oh well? Let me ask, Why do you wanna play Hourglass. What is the purpose? Why do 'You' select the Hourglass, Dive and fight the single ship in front of you? Why?

You can get the same results if you sail around, pick out that same ship and fight each other. You win/lose.
Most the time, you could always lose against a white sheet sailing ship. :P

was just doing some casual HG trying to help out some new players

"Causal" Hourglass? What is that? new players should really stay away from Hourglass, it not good way to get into the game.

daily rewards, even if it's something small like gold.

This would be fine, but if they were "Wins" your looking at the same results. Players getting stomped.

playing a certain number of matches each day could guarantee you one level for each day

    Win or Lose? Same result.

Again, I ask. What is the purpose of you playing Hourglass? Have you confused it for Arena? Or fair fights?
Hourglass at it core was designed for one reason. To skip the sailing the seas looking for a fight. (Only to meet with players who didnt wanna battle)

  • At this point they should have a general population (opt-in) situation where regs can get matched all over the place. Imo

If I was an Hger I would rather have a variety of quicker fights with higher ping (and less fighting the same people/cheaters/etc) than the wait times and fighting the same people over and over.

It's fun to encounter/fight people from all over the place. Higher pvp performance is a mess in the game anyway so it's not like it's a huge sacrifice for more variety with encounters and quick matches being made.

  • like yeah a true elo rating with progress thats in line would be much better. it doenst make sense to get the same rep whoever u sink. but yeh queues are dead especially gally, its remarkable u got 2 even fights in the first place tbh.

Agree with this. I was actually thinking randomly (like a nerd) yesterday that a world-wide queue could benefit the game right now. I’m NA, specifically NA West, and the queue is healthy. I’d imagine that NA East has the healthiest queue and EU (dunno what server options there are in EU, let’s say central) is comparable. An opt-in queue would be great imo. Sure, the ping would vary greatly, but ships are large targets that can still be consistently hit with cannonballs even with higher ping. If there are regions out there with terrible queues (there are), then an opt-in feature could only help.

In a perfect world, those opting for worldwide queue would prioritize closer regions, but expand beyond once that’s slow. Much like our current system which prioritizes comparable streaks (or whatever it does) but expands to any available player once that’s slowed.

I think the biggest drawback to this would be the reaction by pirates who’ve never experienced ping above 100, 150, 200, 250, and so on. They’d have to accept a new reality, or just not opt-in. Loading cannons gets weird above about 160 😂. Based on my limited experience, though, I’d say that SoT players on average have more familiarity with playing in regions beyond their own than many other gaming communities.

  • @burnbacon

    Are you serious ???

    Troll anomaly detected

  • There are an absurd amount of players with HG golden curses who have obtained them using exploits and the old streak bug, that means nothing, they can be extremely bad at playing despite having those curses.

MM doesn't work because there aren't enough players for it to be accurate, so it matches the first thing it finds regardless of the skill level of both players.

Regarding servers - Southern Europe has no servers, at least it doesn't connect us to those servers, it sends us north, which means playing at a minimum of 100 ping.

When I play from Spain, it is impossible to play at less than that ping, however when I am in my new home in Norway, I usually play at 60-65 ping, which is much more acceptable.

The performance is still very poor, but at least I have a more decent ping.

  • Maybe there could be seasonal ranked tiers like other competitive games?
