Ship progression game mode

  • I know that SOT have always tried to keep an even playing field in the game. Everybody has access to the same ships, weapons and equipment etc etc. However, so many players have left because the game lacks individuality and progression. If I spend years playing (which I have) I’m no more ahead of a player that’s just joined other than the fact I look way more cooler than they do (and my boat).

Therefore I propose a different game mode, where players all start with the sandbox version of their chosen ship and as they level up, get to upgrade their ship with new features that suit their tactics better. For example: a sloop with 4 cannons but it’s slower than other sloops. Improved hull armour but the ship sits lower in the water. An extra sail to improve speed. This could also be applied to weapons: blunderbuss with a slug shell or an eye of reach with a scope that isn’t cracked. The possibilities for both ships and weaponry are ENDLESS!

Players need progression to keep coming back, can you imagine Call of Duty where everyone has the same loadout? My fear is when skull and bones is released, a lot of players from sea of thieves will flock to that game as it provides players with the element of progression we are crying for!

Keep the current high seas game mode for those wishing to play and let the players that want progression venture on their own servers knowing the risks of fighting people with different ship builds/ tactics to their own.

  • This sounds awful, no thanks.

Other than you asking to split the game into different modes which is definitely not necessary, I see your suggestion as a potential solution to the age old criticism of this game that the people doing the PvE take way more risk than players just doing PvP.

If there was session based progression such as player, weapon, ship upgrades that would require doing PvE to have access to them that would certainly help address the issues of really good players being able to server hop looking for the best PvE in the game to steal from players who are almost always way less skilled than they are because the crew doing the PvE fully invested into a session may have a slight advantage to their pirate, weapon or ship that the fresh spawn server hoppers will not have access to.

    Very interesting idea to ponder.

If session based upgrade trees were to be added for pirate, weapon and ship categories I would strongly advise making it a random chance selection of what upgrade you get and then give players the ability to choose to accept the upgrade or keep what they have that way players can’t just choose the absolute best upgrades every session it’s a game of chance what you get as you complete whatever PvE related challenges given to you to get the opportunity to speak to the upgrade npc and get a new upgrade. Leave the session and you lose your upgrades.

  • Too many game modes.
Adventure is the only mode, they learned last time managing two separate modes was to much work and strain on servers.

  • @pricey-punch No this wouldn't work at all. The whole idea of sea of thieves is that everyone is on an even playing field besides how skilled the other crew is at the game. While it would be nice to see stats to like this if the game is overhauled from the ground up in the future I don't see it happening anytime soon. Tools not rules.
