Oh hi, new pirate here. After a few starts-and-stops over the years, I think I'm finally "into" Sea of Thieves. I plan to play solo and I'm enjoying the journey of discovery so far, except for the skeleton ships.
This is a quote taken directly from this website: "Leap aboard a Skeleton Galleon to plunder its treasures!" In my limited playtime, this seems impossible. I encountered a skeleton Brig (I think) in my white-sailed rental sloop, and after some cannon fire back and forth I ran aground, got rammed, and decided to jump aboard the skeleton ship. I marauded my way through the whole crew (the captain's down! Sweet!) only to discover that not only were the skeletons respawning, they were doing so at an alarming rate. The experience was the only real disappointment so far in playing SoT.
So, if you're still taking new input from new players in 2023, I'd suggest tweaking either, A) The spawn rate of skeletons on ships (why do they respawn at all?) or B) Your website. For instance, your website could instead say, "Leap aboard a Skeleton Galleon to plunder its treasures if you manage to do so with a gunpowder barrel and a bit of luck" because from the research I've done since the experience, this seems to be the only way for a player to scuttle or loot a skeleton ship. And for the record, I've been overwhelmed and murdered on other occasions along the way--I'm joining an unfamiliar MMO going into its fifth year as a solo player. I expect to be overwhelmed. But the skeleton ship thing was the only gameplay experience that felt unfair and not at all fun.
Skeleton ships for new players
First off you can’t even pick up treasure off a skelly ship until you sink it unless they just recently changed that. Second, just earlier today I soloed the skelly fleet world event, it’s not impossible and not actually that hard. once you play the game more you will get better and it will be more fun. For now maybe stick to simpler voyages or find a crew to help you out. I had the same experiences you did so I understand mate
IF they have loot spawned you can pick it up. Like sometimes you find out they had a keg on-board with a lucky shot 😂
@acadiascreech as a solo you want to stay on your ship vs skellies unless you're okay with sinking. If you're boarding a skelly ship, take food, a sword and find a hole you made before boarding and don't let the skellies repair it. Firebombs will keep them from repairing and on a sloop, from firing. At least skellies don't bail, right? (Get one in a storm 😁)
@pithyrumble Thanks for the tips! I'll NEVER be okay with sinking! I'll take this advice to heart. (I had read about them not bailing their ships.)
@wonderwaffle559 Yes, I'm probably being a little negative with my "impossible" comment. Thank you for the advice!
I read that the SoT community was supportive and that already seems true. I'm coming from 7 years of Overwatch, so it's very refreshing.@hiradc To be honest, the experience came first and the website came second. I quoted the website to be a little snarky, I guess, which isn't called for, I'll admit.
Trying to learn what I can, I thought I'd use the website and read up the old-fashioned way. I think the website design sort of encouraged that since Rare did such a lovely job designing it. Rather than the website's description, I was really basing it on a lot of years of gaming. The respawns (and respawn rate) was a surprise.@acadiascreech OK, it probably feels very harsh as a new player but honestly once you get more comfortable with naval and managing ship (which they're great practice for) you'll find them easy.
Skellies on ships can repair holes hut not bucket water, so the water level is cumulative. Approach the fight same as you would player battles. Try and kill the one on cannon to reduce incoming pressure then spread holes across the ship (if its the gally then you need to hit lower deck shots as mid decks won't let water in until its reached that level and pulls the Hull lower into water).
@hiradc maybe I just had a bug lol. The one time I tried it wouldn’t let me pick it up. Sorry my bad lol
@acadiascreech few things
- there are two skeleton ship types a Sloop and a Galleon and if your on a sloop only the sloop will spawn on you(roaming ships of both type can still attack)
- there can be loot aboard but you must sink them for the rest of the loot
- the skeletons respawn to make the ship less easy to sink trust me when I say once you learn how to deal with the skeleton ships they won't be a problem
4)just keep at it you'll get better at fighting learn from your loses don't give up - sot is a multiplayer game playing solo is hard mode but you can join Guilds or use Discord to find like minded crews maybe even some PLs to help teach you some useful tricks

This will only make the game more difficult.
#1 way sessions go south on a crew is when people can't take an L. Makes it less fun, makes it more stressful, makes it more unpleasant, real quick way to break up a crew in SoT
#1 reason sessions are much more frustrating as a solo than they need to be.
If you wanna make things a lot easier on yourself it's necessary to be alright with sinking.
This game is far too random and servers perform far too randomly to take sinking seriously. You are gonna face a lot of frustrations in this game and a lotta sinking. Frustrations are as much a part of the game when you hit 10k hours as when you hit 5 hours if you don't find a way to accept it being a part of the experience.
Lad, there is no problem n no need of "Tweaking". Ye just misunderstood the information.
"Leap aboard a Skeleton Galleon to plunder it's treasures if you manage to do so with a gunpowder barrel and a bit of luck", means that in order for ye to plunder it's riches, ye need to boarder 'eir vessel n blow up the keg. For such maneuver ye will need a bit of luck.
Also, so if ye try n do that, Blow it up at lower deck (3rd deck from top), then go back were ye've blowed it n kill as many skeletons as ye can. That will prevent 'em from repairing n sunk 'eir ship. Then ye need to return back to yer boat, bring it to place were ye sunk 'em n plunder 'eir treasure!
However, I would also focus on classic n sink 'em with yer cannons fire.@acadiascreech said in Skeleton ships for new players:

Second, bro I have been playing since April 1 2018 apparently and that fleet can overwhelm me. You get the anchor ball boys and it’s frustrating lol. I can imagine as a newer player this is a pain.
It would be rad and super funny to kill all the Skele’s and just watch that ship slam into a rock or island. I think we should at least be able to anchor them.
