What is fun about this game?

  • I bought sea of thieves a long time ago because I thought it was nice.

I played a little bit, forgot about it and now I logged back in because I bought an Xbox.

Spawned in, got in my boat. Got killed within 2 minutes. Spawned back, killed within 3 minutes.

I had no quest, no loot, nothing.

Spawned back in for killed again.

What I am doing wrong here?

I think I am going to uninstall again.

  • It's different for everyone

to some it's more fun, to some it's more rewarding, to some it's about their involvement in the community.

to some it's about the adventure, to some about the stealing, to some about creating content, to some about role playing, to some it's an escape

sometimes it takes a while to take hold, someone might not find their way for a while, sail around a bit aimlessly, then one day it makes more sense because they find what is right for them

If it doesn't work out, that's alright
you're not wrong for not enjoying something
just give yourself a chance, you owe that to yourself
you're not wrong if it doesn't end up compatible

This sometimes happens - change server and you're probably on a server where no other ships are that close and will sink you only when you have some loot on board.

  • @starburgernl sounds like you're playing solo. I would recommend sailing with an experienced crew until you really understand how to play. Unfortunately this game is set up as a social game and you need to interact with people in order to enjoy it fully. If someone starts chasing you down, try using white flares and negotiate your surrender.

There are looking for group posts on Xbox that you can use to join people, and guilds you can join in order to find a good crew.

Finally, in December you will have access to safer seas where you can sail on an empty server until you learn how to play.

  • @starburgernl

Go into your options and find the one for console/controller preferred.

The system will put you in a server with other xbox Pirates, typically they are calmer than PC cross-platform

  • If your ship wasnt sinking while that was happening, that was people trying to spawn camp you, which is a bannable action. That is not standard, and is fairly uncommon, especially since people can be banned for it.

I would give things a try again since its an uncommon occurrence.

  • I find it very hard to believe you were killed so quickly, within minutes, 3 times in a row. That just never happens. Ever.

So if it actually did happen to you, then you just had a bad day. The rest should be fine.

Seriously, I can go for an hour and not see a single ship. I usually don't get in trouble unless I seek it out. And I only get attacked by other players, like a 1 in 20 chance.

  • “What is fun about this game”

Create your own fun. Dwelling on the negative experience only makes it worse.

Like many online games that is open world.

  • I don't know if I enjoy this game because it's "fun". There are things in it that are fun.

But I think where I find myself enjoying the game most often is in the tedium. I like to manage the sails, I like to plot a course, I like to plan, I like to cook and organize the ship and the goods in it.

Fishing is fun, fighting is fun. But those are just moments between the work. I derive satisfaction from sailing the ship. It's not so much that it's fun as it is that it's just... so right.

I tried playing earlier today. It's a bad month for me. I'm having a hard time enjoying anything. But when I left the tavern and saw the sea and I saw my ship out at the dock on it, I felt at peace for a moment. Those moments are the moments I play for.

If you end up not uninstalling and something I said here resonated with you, maybe we could sail together sometime. Maybe I could help you find something here that brings you the same comfort.
