What is the future of The Sea of Thieves?

  • I have a question, which direction is the Sea of Thieves heading?

Let me explain, it’s literally been more than a year since the community chose to resurrect Flameheart. I have yet to see anything that suggests that he is returning!

The last of the Adventures focused on the Dark Brethren using Captain Brigsy to find the temple containing the curse and cure. Again this story has hit a wall. Apparently Brigsy is coming back to offer us the new PvP voyage but does this new skull progress the storyline? I’m assuming not.

The very last Adventure set up the new Monkey Island tall tales but this story literally does nothing to progress or even add anything to The Sea of Thieves. Yes it gives us something fun to do but it doesn’t advance the story that is Sea of Thieves. At least “The Pirate Life” tall tales gave us an new enemy by bringing all the abandoned or forsaken characters of the Sea of Thieves

This post isn’t about the current status of the Sea of Thieves. I often see posts claiming that the Sea of Thieves is dying. I don’t believe that is true. What I want to know is,

When will Rare continue the story of The Sea of Thieves?

I’m also curious how Rare plans to do this? Are Adventures returning or are Tall Tales returning?

When will Rare continue the story of The Sea of Thieves?

    When it's ready.

  • I think they said something about flameheart returning in 2024 but I am not sure. Would love to see the story expand and bring some new features to the sandbox as well. Imagine if flameheart got resurrected and Reaper hideout got the port Merrick treatment. A new revamped reaper fort would be awesome.

  • I'm not sure it is, with the intention to make future adventures replayable I wonder if this means less world based progression as the previous ones were all time locked to specific instances of the world.

  • @hiradc I think all Adventures will be repleyable.

  • There is a lot of Updates and Changes that are coming to Sea of Thieves. However, they require a lot of time & work. That's the reason why we don't see any lore related changes now.

  • I hope the future of the Sea of Thieves brings us brand new stuff for adventure mode.

I want updates and features that have a purpose, are replayable and fun.

    New weapons in the armory.

New ship variants in the emporium.

New sail shapes and cuts that can apply to any owned sail.

Choose between harpoon(s) or mini cannon(s) or one of each at the bow of the ship.

    New world events.

    New world events.

    New world events.

New Hunter’s Call emissary, voyages and beasts to hunt and new fish to catch.

New emergent sea monsters, skeleton brigantine, etc.

Improving the voyages for all the trading companies to make them more fun and interesting to do over and over again.

    Etc.

  • It'll be interesting to see where it goes.

This isn't necessarily the most popular take in feedback areas but I think they have really hit their stride recently with direction.

Yeah, I'm not into direction of guilds but a lot of solid feedback has ended up being implemented as qol for the daily adventure experience.

As far as overall direction goes (minus disagreements here or there) I think they will work in some of the feedback about lore and lore related content.

Sea of Thieves has long been a work in progress, there is some stuff that just really hits the mark and some stuff that just doesn't quite get there yet, then over time it all starts to combine together pretty well. Slow moving but I think 2024 will be a solid year for Sea of Thieves.

Hopefully soon. I do enjoy proprietary over popular IP. I will freely admit I'm in the age demographic that will throw money at Monkey Island content, and I did, but I too want to see where the Sea of Thieves plot is headed.

  • @lordqulex

I wish that the Monkey Island tall tales would have progressed the story that is Sea of Thieves. All LeChuck did was try to take the Pirate Lord’s place.

It would have been cool if The Sea of Thieves got the cooking mechanic or the zip lines for the tall islands. That at least would have added something to the Adventure Mode or High Seas mode.

I get it that development takes time and unfortunately Rare loves their secrets. Even insiders had no idea that the Pirate Life and the Money Island tall tales were coming. When I saw the reveal trailer, I thought it was a gag video and not an official announcement

I'm glad it didn't. I enjoy Dead by Daylight, but would enjoy it more if they had as many proprietary killers as popular ones. I like Pinhead, Freddy Krueger, Ghost Face, the Demogorgon, et al well enough, but I love the archetypal ones more: Trapper, Wraith, Doctor, Huntress, et cetera. I think for me that was one of the major drawing points to Cabin in the Woods for me: the villains all played to the horror theme more than any particular horror icon.

Rare mentioned they are spending time on including future tall tale mechanics into the core game, specifically calling out the zipline IIRC. I don't feel insult swordplay fits into the flow of the game, but I too would love to see more cooking than just a frying pan. But like you said, all these things take time and we need patience.

  • I could be wrong, but I remember someone said that the new siren skull will be something to introduce the adventure of Briggsy with Wanda inside the Ancient Temple in the sotd to look for the skeleton curse cure. Hopefully we will also get that sweet three headed monster (foreshadowed in the secret wild adventure and throught the fate of fortune set).

  • I just rewatched the 2023 visions of the orb that was released around Christmas time last year. Only one vision has yet to come true! The vision of the temple! Rare plans to reuse the Shores of Gold. Unfortunately, no new information or adventures have risen to tell us more.

The last 2 visions were about the Monkey Island tall tales. The imposter from the shadows was LeChuck and “the legend rotting in his prison” was clearly Guybrush trapped in his fantasy prison. The Burning Blade vision was about the 3rd Monkey Island tall tale where the Sword of Souls was reforged into the Burning Blade which literally brought the Pirate Lord to his knees

  • All I wanted is that at the end of the last Monkey Island story, instead of the pirate lord appearing just to be humiliated, the servant of the flame or Flameheart himself would appear to take the sword.

Actually seeing the servant and his reapers fighting Le Chuck would be fantastic.
