Okay hear me out..

  • Utilizing the zipline feature from Monkey Island..

...put a zipline harpoon in ship's masts

Definitely would make for interesting new emergant gameplay. Ide say balanced too; close range, one less person on cannons, additional boarders would have to ascend the mast to zip over...

  • Interesting idea, it would bring new features to the sandbox

  • @soulstinger2k20 but then we would need a Rubber chicken with a pulley in the middle TM

  • This would replace boarding on the ladder? Because the LAST thing we need is more boarding.

  • If they were to allow the ladder to be retracted, then a harpoon with a pulley would balance things out, if not then another method of boarding would just make it really easy for those who mostly use the boarding tactic in naval combat.
I've seen players in HG battles that all they do is launch themselves at you to board while sending their ship away without firing a single cannon and can be very frustrating as it can extend battles instead of a starightforward fight that ends quickly by whomever is the better player.

If you could retract ladders there would be no point in them launching themselves, forcing them in to naval combat unless they can land on your ship or if by chance you forgot to retract ladders.

  • Not gunna lie... This actually sounds super fun. Obviously it would be 'balanced' due to everyone having the ability to do so but imagine 4 sweat Lords on a gally all engaging in this fashion. I feel the skill gap would hurt newer players ambitions. Regardless though..you get my vote!

But remember those gally players (remember we tried to nix 'sweat lord' as a term here) would all be up in their mast and not bilging or on cannons, and it would be harpoon (or sliiiightly longer) range, so fairly close!

I do feel like this is likely as close to grappling lines like historical/modern cinema pirate boarding as we would probably get

I thought Sweat Legend was the new term? :)

To your point, the thing I would like about grappling hooks is the range. We can already snag a ship with the harpoon, but the mechanics make it only border line useful.

    The grappling hook:

    • Would be limited to throw range
    • Being a throwable could be used by multiple crew so that for example you can secure the ships at multiple points
    • A sword can cut the rope on the hook, that hook is used up, the "hook falls in the water"
    • As a supply I would think if they allow the ladder to be pulled up then the hooks need to be readily available
    • Being a throwable they don't have to add equipment to the ship
    • Being a throwable there is room for emergent play "If I grapple the back of a ship from my bow sprint can I be towed?"
    • Ships grappled side by side and pirates with kegs, Oh My :)

If it is just going to be a harpoon like feature then I would say just change the harpoon somehow.

  • I think such mechanic for pvp is unknown waters and some testing and thinking would be required before implementing

for PVE this would be amazing, especially on massive islands to shorten the distance, best example would be Belles Veil part, where the soulflame captain drops 3-4 pieces of loot + you get veil stone, if you happen to not have a chest, this means up to 5 tedious trips up and down to the top of Marauders Arch(as an an example)

  • @soulstinger2k20 sounds cool but I worry about the physics involved. All i would add is as long as it is only at angles that you could currently cannon board from, we don't want ways of boarding ships in front etc. I don't like runners but they should have the choice

  • I would argue if you are close enough to harpoon (very close) that would be a wonderful way to deal with runners!

  • @zig-zag-ltu but you wouldn’t be able to carry loot as both hands would be on the pulley :D

  • @lizalaroo On your back, just like rowing a boat with a keg or climbing a ladder :P
