The pirate adventures of emilio salgari (writer) are amazing, its an itaian writer from the 19 century, so all his stories are on the public domain.
its a very well known autor, not just by the italians, it was very famous also on most latin america, South East Asia, and some other regions, (on my country used to be played as a radio theather, a novel that was performed without any visuals, by brodcasting it on the radio, it was a kids favorite back then when there was no tv, was done as a daily radio series 70 years ago on my country)
its sandokan character, "the malayan tiger"/"the tigers of mompracem" it is famous enough that has alread 7 movies spread from 1941 up to 1971, also there is one live action 6 episodes tv series from 1976, and one animated tv series that spans 78 episodes of 25 minutes each. that spread from 1998 up to 2006, was broadcasted by italian state tv (RAI) and also on disney channel (you already have licence deals with them for things like pirates of the caribean jack sparrow...
i know that even there is lots of materian on english most already produced is on its original italian, or translated to spanish. but but there is huge amount of material even diferent ship type that you can add if you wish.
so there is tons of visual content and stories already made that can be licenced. there is an animated series too.
those are not "caribean pirates" but indic/Sout East Asia Pirates. the diversity of their characters its amazing, .
there is europeans on the stories, good (even his best pal) and bad guys (the ones that tok over his legacy from him)
even if Sandokan is the main character, its not the sole protagonist on all the stories, they are on a shared universe, and later they can meet on diferent novels. this also adds value imho.
You can use his original stories/characters with adaptations or at least have them as insipiration for the setting, or story team. or even lots of cosmetic clothes, vanity items, etc,...
i mean, there were pirates other than from the "western mainstream" current english pirate folklore.
hope this helps creatives, or even others that casually find my post and enjoing pirate stories, go and read his amazing stories.
Kind Regards
As you can see my tag is "Sandokan Tigers" (refering to his crew) and my in game ship is "mompracem" (the ficticious location that features on some stories, yet, based on a real island that has a diferent name) that is featured on his stories, one of his main storiy is even called "the tigers of mompracem" published on the year 1900 (still technically XIX century.) so yes, i am a kind of fan. but i cant believe emilio salgari haven't been used at all by videogames. (that is also a good thing for you)
