Friendly fire switch: a simple way to solve spawn camping, satisfy TDM'ers and give everyone a chance to have fun with their friends!

  • Since Arena left the game, there have been two major problems: spawn camping has increased, and there's no easy way to TDM. Since the very day the game mode was removed, I've been thinking of ways to solve these problems without causing negative effects on any specific player base. After a long time of thinking, I have finally found a simple solution that doesn't take much time or effort nor does it require a huge budget, and it could be added to the game very quickly.

The solution is: A friendly fire switch.
To turn the friendly fire on, you would go to "my crew" and vote for it to activate. The switch would require four votes. This means everyone in the crew would have to agree on the decision. After the friendly fire is turned on, your crew mates will appear as if they are in an alliance with you. If, for some reason, people spawn camped or otherwise abused it, it would require only one person's vote to deactivate the friendly fire.

    This solution would:

    1. Eliminate spawn camping. The reason spawn camping exists is not because people are evil. It's because people love the gun game play of Sea of Thieves, which you can't get enough of in adventure or hourglass.
    2. Give everyone a chance to have fun with their friends. How many times have you played a game and wanted to see which of your friends would win in a fight but couldn't do so because you could only play as a team? The friendly fire switch would solve this problem.
How many times have you been bored at the sea and seen your friend AFK because there's a 20-minute trip to an island? The friendly fire switch would solve this problem.
    3. Give TDM'ers a chance to have fun in peace without harassing anyone who doesn't want to be involved. With the friendly fire switch, you could also revive your teammates, which would help people who want to TDM get the most out of their time without spending time on the ferry.

Thank you for reading this far! I personally don't think there are any downsides to this idea. It would be a very simple quality of life update that would make everyone satisfied.

  • A classic, novel idea that's been suggested several times.

Though, quite bold you propose it would fix the spawn camping issue. It isn't because people are evil yes, but most of the time, it's necessary to sink an enemy player as you can't let them repair holes or bail water out of the boat. This is a self-admitted flaw to the ship maintenance system the developers consistently mention when the topic of spawncamping comes in place.

However, spawncamping will still happen "heinously" for many reasons. Trash talking, slur slinging, and several other reasons for players to lock down a boat and prevent the crew from taking control of their vessel is still going to occur regardless, need to steal a boat and the crew won't join you? Well that boat is becoming yours whether they like it or not! Someone shouting slurs and need to be taught a lesson? Well, while it's never suggested or recommended (as you can still be punished by someone slinging slurs if they report you with some recorded proof), crews with a higher skill caliber than the other will take control of someone's vessel out of ego, domination, and in some cases, righteousness.

Friendly Fire seems like a fix to many issues, but might also lead to unwanted frustration in the middle of combat, as several weapons are going to have bullets flying everywhere, you don't want to get unfairly shot down by your team mate in a sudden PvP encounter. Especially if you manage to have friendly fire in open crew, which is already known to be a mess for many players. Additionally, it's very clear that this suggestion derives from someone that only enjoys the gun play regardless of playstyles, and as expected, there are gaps in logic and a lack of understanding why it doesn't seem like the developers want to encourage using multiple guns against players at the same time.

    Probably because-

In areas of intense action, players may find themselves firing shots or landing strikes that do not cause damage to their targets. While small improvements continue to be delivered during our regular updates, we are continuing to investigate and identify further improvements to the player combat experience.

Yeah, that. As fun as it would be to shoot your friends, I don't think the devs are looking for 200% more complaints about hit registration issues as they're actively working on it, as whatever data they can grab from retail isn't going to be enough to investigate the central cause to hit registration and improve on it, especially with other content (hopefully it's content) updates on the horizon and in need of work and polish before their release.

I'm not against this idea, I just don't think it's very necessary, or this being a graceful implementation for that matter.

  • Devs stated on wiki in early development that crews fighting each other became “horrible” and was not a good experience. Doubt it’ll come in if this was their reaction in testing.

  • What would be REALLY fun is adding a tdm mode to hourglass that you can vote on using the war map similar to voting to dive.

Your ship would still dive and use the same underwater tunnels when searching for a match.

The tdms could take place at sea forts, island forts, large islands, treasuries, shrines and even outposts if an adequate number of spawn points (at least 8 per battle area) are added.

There could be up to four crews, 16 players participating in a single match. All crews would be of equal size.

Just put up a 15 minute timer and the team with the most kills wins.

Arena style respawns that bypass the ferry. No revives.

All crews earn allegiance for participating but the first place crew gets the most allegiance and the last place crew gets the least allegiance.

Finally we would have a way to practice and enjoy cqc against other players on demand. How nice that would be.
