Mic bugging ONLY in Sea of Thieves

  • So I'm a PC player and used to have a cheap gaming headset that sucked in Discord but was alright in SOT. Recently, I just bought a newer one and it is SO much better on ALL of my games and Discord....except for Sea of Thieves. Every time I try to talk in Sea of Thieves, everyone says it's super bugged out and describes it as sounding like I'm in a hurricane only when I talk and it makes my voice distorted. Because of it, most often I've had to avoid using VC in-game, which sucks because it's the most effective communication!

I've checked in-game settings and toggled through the different ways to chat (like push to talk, hold to talk, and always on) and that did nothing. I've checked all my mic settings on my computer and don't have any issues that I can see. My Discord friends say it sounds perfectly fine and way better than my last headset. Other people in other games say the same when I ask about it. I've checked that Sea of Thieves has Mic app permissions, I've checked to make sure it's the default device, and also checked to make sure it is showing that it's working well in the sound control panel and even did the auto diagnostic and went into the game and tested it out then had it diagnose while I used VC in-game. It said everything was fine? (Lies XD) Lastly, I even uninstalled and reinstalled the game and it did nothing to help. I even went into the advanced settings of my microphone properties and switched it to 97000 Hz and all it did was make the weird sound turn into a train sound or if I'm doing something in the background all the time and makes my voice quieter.

Any suggestions? I'd like to be able to talk in-game XD

  • @bladeryn just on the off chance you haven't tried this:

Yep, that will be the solution. Gotta love how Beardly takes the old long route through the Windows Settings to get there though, you can just right click on the speaker icon on your taskbar and go to "Sounds" to bring up that sound control panel nowadays. But, after that, the steps are right.

It wasn't that an update switched everyone's setting, it's that the Season 8 update broke support for 44.1KHz audio inputs and you have to use 48KHz (if your device doesn't support 48KHz, you should be able to upsample it using Nvidia Broadcast, Voicemeeter Banana, or similar).

I'm hoping Rare fix it, because (1) Windows still supports it, and (2) a lot of folks out there are having this issue.

  • @RealStyli and @triheadedmonkey Thank you guys for the responses and suggestions! I did try switching it to 48KHz, 16-bit, and even rebooted my computer afterward (just in case). It didn't really solve the problem but it did make it sound more like a vacuum when I talk. So it isn't as annoying but it is still a constant sound when I use my mic. We also verified that it is like that whether I put it on hold to talk, push to talk, or just constant open mic.
