Something missing from the game.

  • For Developers to please notate, for the next version of this game.

Something you see in ALL pirate and even most pre 1820's sea movies (when ships only had sails). You always see someone using their spyglass to try to see the other ships "colors" or "flag." They are often trying to find out if the person is, for lack of a better word "friend or foe;" perhaps Ally or Enemy. At no time in this game, do you ever look at someone's flag through your spyglass, and feel relief.

Just a thought, what if emissaries (with exception to reapers, which are akin to the Pirate's Skull and Crossbones' flag) lost 2k in gold, for sinking an emissary of the same colors. Like, if a Gold hoarder sees another Gold Holder emissary, they get a warm and fuzzy, because it would be like a ship from Spain in the 1600's seeing another Spanish flag. AND what if you also get gold, for coming to the assistance of another ship flying the same emissary as yourself, when they are under attack?

I understand that with us being forced to allow for the slower systems, like the old XBOX and PS2's, that their is a 5/6 ship limit to the servers, but this is really missing from the sailing experience, so please put something of this nature in the next version, once we get servers with many more ships on them.

  • big no from me.

  • Pass on this idea however if you could name your ship and players can see the name of your ship when you spyglass in on them like any island prompt than that would be cool if you ask me.

  • @nitroxien would be cool, can confirm

  • This is somthing that can be achieved by player action. Communication with other players leads to great interactions. Sure, there are alot of players out there that fall into the murder hobo trap common in pen and paper rpg's, but the only way to change that is players communicating more regularly.

  • Tbh i would happily lose 2k gold for sinking someone.

I could probably earn double that without even leaving the outpost.

But no, let people kill whoever.

  • Much like in the context you are talking about, deception was also in play with flag use in this period and heavily recorded. So, for a game equivalent, we have the Alliance Flags and in particular the Offer Alliance Flag. So you can still get that same sense in the game when you look through your spyglass and see a potentially friendly flag on the horizon. But, you should still be on your guard, cause it could very well be a deception ploy as well.

You even get a bonus for defending them, cause you prevent them from losing their loot so that they can cash in and you get your Alliance Bonus.

So everything you are asking for is already there.

  • @admiralcorporal so a big no for me on the flags. The trading companies reward those who bring them the loot, they dont really care how you get it to them.

And about old/slower hardware. The servers dont care if you are on an OG Xbox One or on a 5k+ pc. To the server they are the same. The ship limitation is because of water. Also the lowest powered device that is allowed to play Sea of Thieves is pc and not xbox.

  • PS2?!? how old is sea of thieves lol.

What makes you think that emissaries from the same trading companies are allies ? E.g. you want skulls, they might have skulls ... they're more like competitors. How you deal with competitors (or they with you), is all up to you and them and might be influenced by the amount of loot they carry, but a penalty or bonus for how you treat them, doesn't make sense.

    👆 This. Exactly. 👆

I honestly hope this game doesn't get a sequel that could potentially take away from this 1 - I just hope that this game continues to grow and evolve over time (new gameplay features, cosmetics, stories, graphics, performance upgrades, and map/ship/pirate/environmental expansion/improvements, etc.); similar to how World of Warcraft has no sequel, but is still played today.

  • @lem0n-curry
Well, can you think of another way to look through your spyglass to see if they are from the same 'country/side/an ally' as you (if you're not a reaper/pirate ship)? I just feel like this is the one thing missing from the experience, and if it were there, then it would feel 100%.

I really like what Nitroxien said, this would be a GREAT new feature.

Want an ally ? Raise the alliance flag !
With 5 crews on a server, how many times will there be another crew that may be the "same side as you" ?

You will have more chance with Reapers though, as most of them are just there for getting the 2.5 multiplier with PvE.

BTW we're all pirates ... just some are more bloodthirsty than others.

You're all right, not just the guy I am quoting. That is why I said for next version. I didn't think it would be in this version of SOT, but I was hoping the next one would allow for 32+ ships on a server where the map may be a bit larger than this one. I think it would be nice if we had some people in the Bahama's area, some doing shipments from Europe to the Bahamas and back, and some pirating those ships. Much larger maps, many more ships, and a chance that the ship on the horizon is flying the same colors. I am not saying it NEEDS this, but it feels to me, in my own opinion, that this is one of the only things missing.

  • @admiralcorporal this game has a planned 10+ year life. we are just celebrating the 4th anniversary. Im not worried about the next version.
