Paints and dyes

  • We all know the drill with this one right.

We like our cosmetics but there is that little detail that you want to change... The colour is slightly off from what you wanted.. you know what I mean.

There has been pots of dye or paint outside the clothing shop since the day it was implemented and yet several years later we still haven't got the ability to use them.

For such a small quality of life change it could make a massive impact to allow us more creative liberty when customising both our player and our ship.

Dyes and patterns could be locked behind particular commendations so it's still not a free for all and any base cosmetic changes would still be locked the way they are eg those torn sails.

I hope something like this will one day make it into the game but honestly, does anyone have any objections to this?

  • Personally I prefer the system of recolors of things to add that variety as it poses more of a potential Gold Sink overall. Plus less chance of someone recreating a color scheme that is essentially meant to be exclusive.

Really, you honestly prefer the hands tied limitations to a catalogue of open possibilities? Huh, each to their own I suppose.

In terms of reskins, simply have the paint or dyes for that reskin locked behind the same exclusively.

  • @laughsmaniacaly indeed I do, sometimes limitations aren't the worst thing in the world to be honest, and this is a place where I am mostly fine with the idea.

Alternately, I could see Dyes working as a "one time use" kind of thing where you have to pay each time you want to make a change as opposed to permanently unlocking them to use as you like. You go to the appropriate Shop and instead of viewing Inventory you would view Modifications and pay to make swaps in this Mode. You would of course need to lock off certain options to keep various cosmetics exclusive still, but this could work and become something of a Gold Sink process (I wouldn't lock it to Ancient Coins, like the Pirate Appearance, but to either Gold or Doubloons).

To make sure the aesthetics of sets are kept, I think that most "main" sets should be uncolorable. I don't want to see a white Black Dog set. But the basic stuff like the dresses/jackets should be able to be dyed to the extreme. Or even color swaps for a few things. Maybe you want your Silent Barnacle clothing to be in the "Green" variant because we aren't getting the recolor.

I think sets with a recolor shouldn't be able to be dyed however you like. Is it a Rogue Sea Dog jacket, or a Sea Dog jacket dyed white? I like being able to look at someone and know exactly what they'd been through and what they're proud of doing. Dyes would slow this down while I'm wondering whether it's a Sea Dog jacket dyed blue or a Rogue Sea Dog Jacket dyed blue.

The basic stuff should definitely be possible to dye, but with all the recolors in the game you'd never be able to keep track of what's what if everything was dyeable.

  • If you're worried about exclusivity to certain sails and so forth, as I said initially, those would all be locked behind their respective requirements.

So for example you would be able to pick your sail base colour with a pattern to colour on top.
For example, say kraken hunter sails were unlocked via X amount of killed Kraken's, this would now unlock the potential dye and pattern, you could then keep the preset arrangement or adapt it with your own colour choices.

Same for outfits, You get the colours and outfits as separate parts and are free to vary those at your own discretion, more prestigious outfits would have particular dyes for them to be unlocked or maybe even have a slight variation to them (I'm told they're not directly a reskin if the same outfit tho it looks it to me).

The idea opens a huge amount of greater customisation without sacrificing gameplay.
