Merchant mission/world event

  • The generation of loot bugs me a bit. It would have been nice to have an island that had a sugar plantation on it, another one with a mine for ore, etc. to have somewhere in-game to explain where stuff comes from. However, implementing such just for cosmetic consistency would be difficult with little payoff outside of emersion.

A better explanation and possible world event/merchant mission would be a series of merchant's vessels flying an escort flag that works similar to the alliance flag. The ships arrive through one portal and travel across the sea thieves to another portal. The in-game explanation is that the sea of thieves is a risky shortcut. Players could attack this ship to get the loot or accept the escort mission via their own flag box to sail along with it to protect it. Occasional skelly ships would spawn to attack, prioritizing escort players. The reward is straight gold and rep based on how long you stayed within 1 square of the ship. You have to be with the ship for over 75% of the voyage for it to count for commendations.

Attacking ships would get loot once the ship sinks and commendations. With extra commendations for sinking the escort player ships. Separate accommodations for sloops, brig, and galley.

  • In my opinion the game doesn't needs a pve version of a merchant ship when the pvp possibility is still there. Attacking merchant emmisary ships still gets you the goods (if you are lucky).

As for the bodyguard convoy, that is what alliances are there for.

  • @metal-ravage

You could say the same for the skeleton fleet, forts etc. Also, this is not strictly PvE. Ship A is defending the ships for gold & rep, Ship B is attacking the NPC ship, and Ship A for the items and rep.

  • I think the explanation for merchant crates and the like already exists. The crates are shipped in from beyond the shroud.
The Sea of Thieves has no sugar plantations because the Sea of Thieves is not self sustaining.
    There are no farms.
Sure there’s fish and meat. But that’s it.
Those silks and sugars, they’re all imported. That’s the explanation.

  • @mostexpendable

    Imported and sold to who?
There are no towns full of NPC to support the economy that is there. I understand why Rare has not invested in this side of things, this is not WoW, the engine and mechanics do not lend themselves to such a large world. So do not look behind the curtain. The important thing is if the game is fun to play, we are all here so yes.

  • @miserenz Wild Henry needs his silks man, I don’t know what else to tell you.

  • The lore reasons for the trade goods already exists.

The Grand Maritime Union sent in a Merchant representative.

You are working for the GMU by doing Merchant Missions.

They are importing those goods through the shroud. Everyone knows how to get in now because others have done it. That's how they got into the Sea of Thieves in the first place.

The Lost Shipment voyages are another reason those crates are in the seas and washing up everywhere.
