Graphics Have Taken a Dive On My Windows 10 Machine

  • I have been playing Sea of Thieves for a few months, and it has been running "like butter" on the high end up until last week. Suddenly, load times have increased pretty dramatically, I get stutter during gameplay and distant objects are rendered very poorly. I can't think of anything I installed recently that would cause the slowdown, so I wonder if it is a Windows setting that has been inadvertently changed. I've tried reinstalling the game and it seems to come back to full strength for about 30 minutes but then starts dropping back off. SoT is using about 30% of my Nvidia GPU while Desktop Window Manager is using the integrated Intel GPU at 100%.

So my question is, does anyone have an idea what could be going on?

    Specs:
    Intel i7-1070H
    16 gb of RAM
    Nvidia GTX 1650 Ti

    Thank you in advance.

  • I'm having the same problem just started when season 2 came out. Can't find a reason for why the game is rendering so bad.

  • @elevenfriend79

    • Disable Game Bar

    • Toggle Game Mode <only benefits low end PC's

    • Disable Hardware Accelerated GPU scheduler

    • Disable all unneeded Notifications and Focus Assist

    • Review your Nvidia Control Panel 3D settings for both Global and Sea of Thieves for accuracy

    • Check preferred GPU apps like Chrome and Spotify and set to CPU only.

    • If you do a lot of server hopping, then I would suggest installing ISLC to clear your standby list because the client appears to have a memory leak. Instead of releasing memory upon exit, the game will incur around a 2000Mb charge to RAM with each server queue. When your RAM becomes more than half full the game will typically start to stutter and suffer from other performance issues.

Please note, you should not do all these at once, otherwise you won't have a reference to which setting may have worked or not. Pick those that apply and try one at a time, then check for improvement in performance.

  • @bizi-betiko thank you for your response. I ended up resetting my machine to factory settings which cleared it up (something which would have been a last resort in the past, but, surprisingly, Windows 10 has made it much less painful these days). Hopefully, your suggestions will help someone else. Happy sailing!
