Sid meier's like upgrade slots (one session only)

  • Hey guys,

Thinking back to Sid meier's pirates. I was wondering if perhaps we could get some inspiration from that game (and others) to implement that would improve the game. And i thought about the following. Like the emissary flag, you could go to an outpost and select an upgrade to your ship (which would cost a fair amount of gold each time you want to use it for that session) (the game has alot of people with just excessive amounts of gold so, i feel like that would help that bloat a bit aswell)

Upgrades (that session only, not permanent) COULD be like the following:

Hammocks: That session only, add an extra crew slot to the ship you're using.

    Cotton sails: Speed increase

    Copper plating: Increase turn rate

Iron Scantling: Increased durability (either by having your ship "ignore" one thing that would make a hole every X amount of time) (could be something different but i feel like smarter people then me can think of something better)

Grape-shot: Allows players to use special crew killing (wounding) rounds for cannons. (or somesuch)

Fine-grain powder: increases range of cannons (or makes them fire straighter) whichever seems the least open to abuse of some sort.

Just a thought i had today that i felt like sharing. Perhaps its a terrible idea, but could inspire other players or devs.

    Have a nice day!

  • I feel that would break the balance of the game, its awesome because rich pirates and poor pirates alike all have the same items and it really comes down to skill and knowledge on how to win battles.

  • Technically, if we really want to deep dive into it, an "upgrade system" that is session based which could be put in place while still maintaining the spirit of the game, but it wouldn't be what most people want when they talk about that system.

It couldn't use Gold (or any other currency) for it as that would favor players with more time and coin on their accounts already. They would just have to be options that you can select in session, which anyone else can also select if they want to.

In a way this could be treated like our Weapon Loadouts, where we have limited slots but we all have access to the same options, it is just a matter of what combination we decide to put in place.

It was also need to be mandated, similar to how you don't have a choice but to carry two primary weapons at all times, you'd have to have Upgrades running at all times, the only difference being which ones you've selected for this play session.

They would also need to be able to be changed easily mid session, just like Weapons. This means we will be limited in the kinds of things these upgrades could do (for instance, no Hammock as that is hard to manage mid session without a major potential for exploiting or trolling).

So, as much as it pains me to say it, it would be in theory possible to have some kind of system like this. It pains me because I don't really think it is the best idea in the world, but in the interest of this potentially being a constructive conversation in regards to the topic it seems pertinent to bring these kinds of things up so that it isn't just another thread of ideas that end up with no place in the game.

Rare has admittedly set themselves a difficult task in designing a game that is heavily engaging while holding true to a certain core philosophy. As such, it would honestly behove us as a community to try and keep suggestions in that vein. Unless we just want to have a generic conversation about how some kind of feature could be cool if done in the appropriate type of game, but that doesn't feel like the point of the Feedback and Suggestions.

So, with a bit more thought into the idea I believe you could present something viable that is in the vein of what you want, but for me I'd rather see new interesting activities, and fleshing out things we already have a bit more where possible.

    Happy discussion!
