Megalodon Spawning

  • So I've spent an embarrassing amount of hours hunting the shrouded ghost ever since it was released in shrouded spoils and I can't help but wonder sometimes about the actual mechanics of how megalodons spawn in general. What we know according to the sea of thieves wiki is as follows: they spawn randomly in open water, they'll spawn to attack you if you're idle for too long, they have a higher chance to appear if you have loot on board, and the deeper the water, the better. During my time shark hunting, I've used several different methods which include sailing island to island in deep open areas, sailing a loop around the entire perimeter of the old world in a square, and finding one spot to sit and wait. I've seen the most results with the latter. I'll sit and wait in a deep, wide open corner of the map, far from any islands or rocks, and store up loot from killing encounters. Then I'll stay idle for as long as it takes until something appears. Here are my findings: it appears, at least through the time I've spent doing this, that the quality and/or quantity of loot aboard does affect the likelihood of an encounter. When an encounter does appear, another is much more likely to appear either during or quickly afterwards. And lastly, the majority of the encounters have been crested queens. Now, who knows if these are actually representative of any real statistics or if it's simply how the dice rolls, but it's what I've recorded thus far. The encounter string I do believe has some mechanical truth to it however, because nearly everytime I've gotten and encounter, another follows immediately after, and sometimes another after that. The crested queens, I'm not sure. According to the sea of thieves wiki, any shark can appear anywhere, but I'm recording more crested queens than hungering ones even and they're a lower rarity (these encounters have largely been recorded in B20 on the map, at the bottom left hand corner). I started to question if the megalodons didn't have preferred regions for spawning but I haven't found any evidence of that and the wiki itself, as I said, denies it. If anyone has any input on your own experiences and possible theories of these mechanics, I'd be glad to hear them. At the time of writing this, I'm sitting in my shark hunting spot waiting for more encounters and I've already clocked in 6 more hours today for this hunt.

The Shrouded Ghost spawned for me and a buddy (6 months ago) on a sloop doing TT3. We had just left Lone Cove heading south and had no loot aboard. We did have TT items, 2 X keys.

  • My guess is Hungering One and Crested Queen are the same rarity. I very seriously doubt Megs notice or are concerned with loot. Rather it's just a consequence of the fact that there's a timer between when you first start sailing, and how long before one notices you. And if you kill one the timer is reset. If you didn't kill the megolodon and it goes away because you went near an island, or crossed regions, the same one will often stay on your trail and attack again.

Oh and all types of megs have been spotted in all regions for sure.

  • They should let you buy a bottle of pirate blood in game, that you pour into the sea to attract a Meg.
Attracting megs this way should have consequences though. Like Megs attracted by blood should be at least 2x more aggressive than the regular ones attacking the boat more often and swimming faster.

  • My numbers confirm what @Dekeita said. Hungering one and Crested queen have the same odds. 2/3rd of the megs are one of those.
There's definitely a link between loot onboard and the chances of one spawning. Especially with TT stuff. Each time I did the shores of gold I had a meg spawning on my way back. Pretty sure it was the same with Briggsy.
Good luck finding that white meg.

  • Ghost Meg is just that...a ghost.

I'm a top 100 player in terms of klicks sailed.

    Never seen one.

  • I honestly hope to see it one day soon.. :)

  • @drayman86 Ehhhhhh, maybe top 10,000 ;)

  • I hope to god that one day they make it more “common” but still be rare

I am curious where you obtained this information. Not doubting that you have sailed a great deal, but outside of looking at where you are in comparison to those on your friends list, I have not been able to find a list of top 100 players in any category. I would be a little curious to see where I am at as well. Can you point me to where you obtained this information?

ps. The shrouded ghost is just a place holder in the Bilge Rats and Legendary achievements with chains on it. It doesn't exist. It is a lie.

  • @cptkerman Shores of Gold is the perfect example of why it's just time based. You go spend an hour or two over there. And then bam as soon as your in the open ocean again Meg every time.
