Sloop vs Brigantine + General sloop problems - Issues and feedback.

  • I played since launch, took a few breaks came back for all the major releases, I've always been a advocate of PVP.

TLDR, the Brigantine is OP, the Sloop int he current environment is too disadvantaged especially in a SOLO scenario.

Not even factoring in all the "PVE" "emergent" threats..

The power disparity between the Sloop vs the Brig in an equal competency situation is insane.

The Brig is faster (except for directly into the wind), has 3 players, turns better, accelerates faster and is stronger.

A sloop has zero advantages over a Brig except for literally facing the wind and running away.

A sloop has the manoeuvrability to get shots on a Galleon, not vs a competent Brig crew.

The larger of the two ships Big advantage of crew numbers should be offset by it's ability to sail when said crew members are boarding. This is the case for the Galleon, if 2 members are off boarding, the ship is significantly disadvantaged in it's capabilities.

The Brig however, can essentially be solo sailed to 90% efficiency. This is a problem.

I suggest a couple of simple fixes - Optionally, on either the Brig OR the Sloop:

    Brigantine

    1. Slow the Brig down when under full wind, It's current top speed is so fast that unless you sail into the wind on a sloop it will catch you at such a fast pace.
    2. Reduce the time to top speed, currently the Brig reaches top speed extremely fast.
    3. 10% speed decrease in all aspects of Brig tailing - Turning the wheel, adjusting sales, raising anchor etc.

OR Instead of Brig changes, adjust the loop as follows

    Sloop

    • Slightly increase the " full wind " speed of the sloop so that a Brig cannot catch it so fast AND Smaller turning circle, allow the sloop to turn quicker.

    Or

    • Rear facing cannon - Sloops inherently get chased, give them some kind of defence when in the chase and force other ships to change their angle. Give this cannon a very small arch of fire, reduce it's capabilities to only allowing small holes.

Sloop gameplay is miserable at the moment, especially solo. As a competent player I can never be sunk, ill put that out there. I guarantee I can sail (run) until the game crashes or I get bored and go to sleep.. But, I can't take the fight to a competent Brig crew no way.

  • I agree with increasing sloop top speed, but would offset with also making them sink slightly faster as they are pretty invincible with both crewmates alive.

I have posted many times hitting on a lot of the same issues in power disparity, but the community just isn't interested in balancing changes. Some even think sloop is best.

I'm with you though, sloop is very underwhelming, with the only benefit being they are very convenient (and sink slow if duo crewed).

  • @calicorsaircat Yep, i'd agree to an extent. making them sink faster would exacerbate the "PVE" issues that they have in a solo setting however. Like getting knocked off your ship by a skeleton cannon ball, getting put to sleep etc by Skele ships.

  • @gianni001 Yep, that is a pretty annoying scenario. One of my first posts was even removing knockback from cannonballs which just makes the game frustrating, and replacing with limp.

I hope Rare does eventually recognize the great deficiencies of the sloop, and the value having a smaller, faster ship would have on improving the game as a whole. I'd honestly like to see more PVP sloops with hit and run play styles, making the sea a more dangerous place. I'm tired of brigs being the go-to ship for everyone, myself included. But I default to it even solo because the speed is worth so much more to me.

  • I personally almost always run sloop. I like it the best. With another legend or good player I almost never lose in PvP. Brig or gall. Not saying your wrong persay. Just that I pwn almost everything I see on a sloop constantly.

  • Biggest reason I like sloop is because unless you have perfect crew more people often make things harder if they can't work as a team. I would rather have one person with me that I can trust. I think that factors in somewhere. And we all know how hard it is to find a crew that works well together

  • Brigantine has basically the speed of Galleon while one person can manage it. It's better ship than Sloop and much better ship than Galleon. Some kind of balancing, starting with the sailing speed is needed.

  • Yup. Other than idiotic interior layout, where to check the map you have to run all the way from the back to the front (while it could and should have been placed right where bed is), brig has no real problems, when you get used to it after the sloop. Just as fast when going into the wind, and way better in all other situations. I'm not going to try manning it solo, but when there are two of us, brig is an obviously better choice.
