Sloop Sail positioning

  • Hello All!

I've been solo slooping for 2 days now after not playing the game for quite some time. I used to sail with my brother but since he doesn't play anymore I gave solo slooping a go.

Now I'm still pretty noobish but just found out that I've been sailing the sloop all wrong the entire time.

So is it true that unless I can "catch" the wind from either the back or crosswind from the back I should just put the sail straight? Feels kinda strange going against the wind or a crosswind I can't "catch" with my sails just in front.

Off-topic, is kill on sight the standard now? Haven't encountered a friendly crew yet since I returned.

  • Yes the sails set to stupid is the fastest way to sail a sloop in the conditions you describe. No, I don't get it either. Works though.

If you're solo slooping, it's mostly KoS. Not always, but people think you're an easy mark when you're on your own. You don't look like a threat when you're solo, which is why it pays to make sure that you actually are a threat.

  • It's called: "Setting you sails to Stupid". Although I prefer to call it "Reverse". Since that's what should be happening with that trim.

And yes. It's totally become "kill on sight". Didn't used to be.

To counter others, it is not only a Kill on Sight mantra as many would like to paint it as for whatever agenda they want to promote. I solo primarily and while I will encounter such mentality from time to time, it is far from the norm. From my own adventures I'd say it is less than 50/50 - I regularly come across crews that are either friendly or just not interested in fighting (either adopting a "live and let live" attitude or simply avoiding others). That or maybe I am just that good at evading others....but I don't think so.

I think it all depends upon the session - some are loaded with bloodthirsty pirates, others quite peaceable, and others a mix (which have been the majority of the ones I've been on to be quite honest). That in itself is part of the beauty of the game, each session presents a different type of interactions making for varied gameplay.
