Sloop Caught my Sloop - Wind was blowing against

  • Can someone explain how another sloop was able to catch me when their sales were perpendicular to the wind (which we were both sailing into) and my sails were parallel to the wind? I am 100% confident that I was sailing INTO the wind and not with it.

I did not think this was possible and now I am wonder if the wind is different for each ship/crew, because that is the only reason that explains how this other sloop caught up to me.

Really comes down to how they man the ship. My buddy and I can catch any sloop that chooses to shoot at us.

  • @captainkashus He had better sails/angle into the wind.

I've had some instances where I was at full sail, maximum angle, and the other ship somehow dusted me, so kind of wonder the same. I dunno. I always assumed the water had nothing to do with it, but maybe the other ship had a better angle on the waves and that's somehow relevant?

  • Neither of these answers explains how this was possible.

They did not have a better angle on the wind. We were both going into the wind (IE against). Their sales were perpendicular to the wind, which is the worst thing you can do to gain speed. That is the equivalent of saying that it is easier to roll up hill than down. It makes no sense. The wind was blowing directly against both ships.

I am wondering if there is some weird wind mechanic in this game that I am unaware of.

  • Well, what if it doesn't matter what you do with your sails when you're against the wind? It's not like anyone has ever scientifically measured these things. Most of what we know about this stuff is largely assumed.

  • If you are going straight into the wind, the game mechanics actually favor the sails in the "fresh new ship" position for some reason.

When trying to outrun galleons into the wind in a sloop, if im going straight into the wind and i turn my sail all the way left or right the galleon will slowly catch me. If i put it in the center i will slowly pull away.

I think the game mechanics look at it like this, if there is no wind to catch at all, then depending on the sail angle there is a default push to the angle of the sail.

Also were you watching the chasing ship? there is a technique in sailing called tacking which you can use to catch a ship going into the wind.

This is what I needed. Thank you for providing this answer. Thumbs up!

  • I can say three things about the wind with absolute certainty:

    1. you go faster with your sail at full billow.
    2. you go faster the more you lower your sail.
    3. you go faster with the wind than against. I timed sailing across the map both directions. But for all I know, the difference could simply be due to billow.

After all the time I've put into the game I couldn't tell you much more than that. There's a lot of conjecture about these things, like the theory that sloops are faster against the wind than galleons and stuff like that.

Tacking doesn't work. I've tried it. It's actually slower.

  • @lucid-stew Really? Ive never been in a situation to try it, but heard others say it works, as long as the angle isnt to steep and you dont do it that quickly. Ive had galleons keep up with me pretty well, when i see them use slight angles to catch a little wind, but its rare a crew does that.

This is essentially what I'm saying though. It really could go either way. No one has endeavored to test this things. It would also be very difficult to test because you'd need set conditions and the wind shifts slowly over time. you'd also need 2 crews co-operating to test it.

  • @lucid-stew true. I only know about the sail being in the default position to go faster into the wind from experiencing it myself.
I tested the sloop when it came out. Found out the hard way that galleons were faster and would catch me. Until one pioneer session a little later a sloop outran our good galleon crew into the wind. He was never close to us, but was heading to an outpost into the wind. He had his sail in default position(was probably a newer player). This was when i learned that the sloop was faster into the wind. I also believe i was the first to ever mention this tip in these forums when players complained sloops could never get away when it was new to testing.

So later on when soloing a galleon came for me. I knew right away, go into the wind which i did, they had momentum to get close to me from the angle of their approach, but soon was right behind me into the wind. Was funny because I stood on the back of the sloop using the wave emote and i could see them about 20m behind me on the deck. I noticed then that they were very slowly gaining on me when they changed their angle to catch a little wind. I then remembered how that one sloop ran away from us so quickly in the past and thought id try to put my sail in the center position(i had it all the way to the side). Once i did i pulled away much faster, when they tried to angle into the wind again the next time, it didn't make a difference and they gave up chase.
