Diving = Game feels empty = Idea's how to fix?

  • I know, it's been said before.
The servers feel EMPTY. Especially palpable lately. No players on the horizon. No players close enough to have any sort of interaction. Boo !
I feel it's becoming more common to experience a whole session without seeing another player boat. Boo !

Interactions with other crews is what made this game loved.
    How to address this?

    My Idea?
Any mission you could dive to, purposefully puts you closer to the middle of the map, rather than the edge.
Think of it like a risk-vs-reward.
You can still dive straight to an island, fort etc., but you won't be sent to the edge of the map, rather you'll be significantly closer to the middle.
There could be exceptions like Tall Tales, but diving to an island will only allow the crew to dive to those islands closer to the middle.
Crews who want to avoid other boats can still skirt the edge of the map, players who want action know where to patrol.

Benefits of this might flow on to address some complaints.
E.g. Sailing to a world event on the edge of the map would no longer be at risk of not giving you the intended loot pool reward.

Another idea could be to simply keep players on the server for longer. Bring back multi-island missions.

    Thoughts?

  • So far, the only cannon fires I often hear are from the Flameheart Fort World Event. and nobody does those anymore...

ou can still dive straight to an island, fort etc., but you won't be sent to the edge of the map,

so...any of those edge islands wont be used? Making them an empty island with no benefits? What of Shrines? Treasuries? There a few near the edge.

Not only was diving created for hourglass, it also shortens the sailing time for players, since many were complaining about how long it took to get to their destination and couldn't play for long hours. Sea forts and diving helped these players significantly. By only allowing players to dive to the middle of the map (so, around Reapers Hideout?) it creates an area anyone can camp and get the jump on you before you can adjust sails, turn, and fire back, essentially a form of hourglass. Also, this company probably put a lot of money and development time into creating this feature, and by making it intentionally worse for the player, wastes the time and money spent developing it. The genie is going to be difficult to put back in the lamp here.

The only way I can see them trying to prevent diving, is to either give an incentive to stay (the details around that are beyond me), or another rumor I've heard, where you lose your grade 5 status and are back at lvl 1. The jury is still out on that however. But forcing players to spawn in one area on the map, and then wasting development time to worsen the feature, I don't think are the answers here.

Won't be used? Sure they will.
I'm proposing a higher probability you'd dive closer to the middle of the map, creating a greater possibility for encountering another crew.
    Risk VS Reward.
So Diving already has a chance of seeing another boat on the horizon, I'm simply asking for that chance to be higher.
    The seas feel so empty.

I'm not saying every diver is going to spawn into M13. Just less likely to be near the edge of the map.

Maybe having diving missions (those applicable) could be multi-mission?

Surely there's more idea's out there to help the servers feel alive again.

  • I think diving is really useful. Saves a lot of time of boring sailing for a million squares against the wind and it's super useful for commendation hunters. The sad reality is:

    1. The vast majority of players are pve / chill players who just want to do their own activities in peace in solo or with their friends and don't want to be bothered.
    2. Very low player count, especially on controller only servers (we all know the reasons).
    3. Those who were eager to do pvp found in HG their happy place
    4. Those players who just want to play the game as it should be (pvevp) are basically cooked, and it seems the only way to enjoy that old playstyle is by joining a discord server / community that organise specific themed events.
  • @Smuntface I disagree about servers being empty. Literally last 5 times I played I have seen 3 Grade 5ers and been attacked by about 10 toxic players/hackers in the last 2 weeks

  • based off the developer update video with drew he mentioned something about server merging rules and it appears they try not to merge you too close to other players. obviously this is conditional. as our players spawn on the ship when we log into the game i think a freshly spawned ship either at an outpost at setting sail or at an island after sinking i dont think that ship is technically considered active until you raise anchor? because i have surfaced at outposts many times when diving to a tall tale to get a better starting location.

so that being said with this whole season being focused in the roar and its a much smaller portion of the map. think of it like why the kraken would always stop spawning with updates and why for the longest time megs werent spawning. those events need a battle area. so the game looks for a radius around your ship that is free of obstructions, rocks, islands, sea forts. and over time they have flooded the ocean with rocks for some reason. either to prevent us from sailing in a straight line while doom scrolling on twitter like we all did in year1. or because they thought it would cool for sneaky pirates to have more stuff to hide behind? pirates life made this much worse as they wanted all outposts to be a launching point for that tall tale. it didnt have to be this way. at the start yea it was the new update. everyone was doing it. but now its so rarely done that choosing monkey island or pirates life from the main menu could put you at a specific outpost and cut down on the number of stone arches. we only had 1 arch at the launch of this game and im fairly certain that got scaled up massively and became the arena tavern? now theres 6 old school arches near each out post for no purpose other than 1 off tall tales. so because there was no clear enough area for pve encounters to spawn they would just get stuck or not spawn. the fix for this was them shrinking the battle area. took years to do though.

so i think right now the devils roar is too congested. they might even have a merge rule of "if 2 ships are in the region dont allow another ship to merge here" as the world has 4 regions this seems like a reasonable restriction to have. until you force the whole community to only play in one region.

so basically the seas feel empty because new ships arent being allowed to spawn at morrows if theres 2 other ships in the roar, ships cant merge out of the roar onto another server if theres already 2 people on every server in the roar as well. so if anything it might merge you off to a new server or would merge you to a server with only 1 other ship in the roar. same problem if there were other ships they would be on the west side of the map then not in the roar so it would feel empty.

just add this to the list of conflicting game design concepts. usually if you are out in the roar hiding from the rest of the server they would merge you off the server because you were alone. they want you to be near other players so the pvpers can come sink you. they prioritize pvp fun over pve fun. but then they have limiters like this so you arent out doing the molten sands fortress for example and all of a sudden 3 ships recently merged into the server in the same reason. good luck selling your loot!

  • @smuntface

    Two very simple changes.

    1. Diving to HG takes you to HG only servers vs other players diving to HG. No world events, NPCs voyages or loot. This would give HG players more stable servers as the number of assets would be at a minium. HG players can still be 3rd partied by other crews who finish there HG match fast enough. To return requires sailing to a portal in the middle of the map. Aventure players would not have 33% of the ship slots taken up by HG players hence more interactions.

    2. HG players stacking can not be in an alliance. When its time for an invasion, if they are on a server with the max number or crewsmm they, or another crew are server merged out to make room for an invasion. This will happen more regulary.
