The Devils Roar. Should it get a update

  • Oh the Devils roar. What a forgotten Area it is.

In case for those that are not aware the Devils roar is a firey. Wasteland like region of the Map located to the southeast of the map. Added with the Forsaken Shores update. While it presents a higher challenge to crews due to volcanos. It comes with the added benefits of providing better loot.....At least that was what the Roar was Originally for.

Though in recent times the whole point of the land has been in my opinion rendered moot. A big example you can go to is the Molten Sands fortress. Possibly the original Mega fort before the FOTD and the FOF. Located near the edge of the map. It took a good bit to be implemented. But once you complete it your reward is...Basically the same loot as a regular vault with ashen loot. Keep in mind that you still have to worry about a active Volcano during it as well. And while I am not sure if you can get a FOF at Molten sands. Last I've heard loot is the same. So you don't even get a Ashen Athena.

Some other examples I can go to are how only vault voyages are affected by the roar. Meaning you can't get say. Ashen Ghost ship voyages. Or Ashen lost shipment voyages. And with the current world events like Flameheart. Ashen winds and The FOTD giving a grand amount of gold. The whole point of the Roar is null and mute. Unless you want to do Ashen Athena voyages. Ashen vaults. A tall tale. Or if you really want to get the remaining Forsaken ashes cosmetics. There is no point in going to the Roar anymore. Which is a same since the Roar is a interesting looking set of islands all things considered.

However. However. I am curious With the issues listed with the Roar. What would you do to improve on it? If anything I think at the very least adding Ashen versions of the Ghost ship and lost shipment voyages with Ashen versions of Ghost loot and Ashen lost shipment would make it. At least serviceable since at the very least you are not restricted to the old crummy voyages. But that's just me. Feel free to toss around ideas for what would you do to expand the Devils Roar

  • gameplay wise a big issue would be the volcanoes either taking out things like fleets/events and such making it too easy too often or having it not harm them which is just weird design

You already can finish a fleet without firing a shot with patience add a volcano on top of that and it's easier and more valuable. I like the idea of more roar options but it doesn't seem like it works out well in application.

Sure we like that geysers wreck skellies/bosses but is that really a good balance? not really imo

Overall I think it works for what it is right now. I'm not really seeing appeal in trying to get people over there just leave it for those that are into it and keep it an occasional spot to check out.

  • @jg13-gamer The Roar needs attention as much as Arena does. They've nearly abandoned it, it hasn't gotten 2/3 of the new voyages, 3/3 of the new world events, and is generally devoid of content. I want this whole game to have something to offer no matter where you go.

  • Moot. Mute is a setting your TV has to make no sound. Moot is a point that is no longer relevant.

That said I am 100% in favor of anything adding more to the experience in the Roar. I love the volcanoes. I love the whole thing, and I agree there should be more there.

  • @cptphteven Thanks for compensating for my grammar.

But yeah. I think arguably the only issue with expanding the Roar is. How many players would want to go through the risk of volcanos for. A little bit extra loot.

Best case scenario could be to increase the amount of gold ashen loot gives even further. Having Ghost ship and Lost shipment voyages be affected if you buy them in the Roar. And maybe even allowing say. Molten sands fortress give ashen fortress loot. Or a skeleton fleet give you Ashen Skeleton ship loot?

I think if we're trying to be reasonable without suggesting say. Reworking the Roar itself.

  • @jg13-gamer

Honestly, everything that spawns in the roar (skeletons ship loot, meg loot, etc.) should have the Ashen modifier.

Or, possibly better yet - just give a (small) percentage chance for any loot to be the Athena variant.

  • Personally... I like the roar as it is. But that is probably because I am a solo slooper and as long as you aren't running emissary... you can sail the roar all day long without being bothered by larger crews. Nobody goes out there and that is fine by me. It's as close to a PVE server as you can find.

  • I wouldn't mind more 'Ashen-ifying' everything, including the voyages, but I'd kind of like more 'xx of Rage' items. Ashen items sell for more simply because they GLOOOOOOOOOOW, but you can find them anywhere in the world. Wouldn't mind some flaming ashes or unstable nitro barrels that sell for a trove of coins to the merchants, and so on.

risk / reward, risk your ship catching fire and exploding into the stratosphere / make bank.

  • The Roar is why I finally bought the game. The Stitcher Jim trailer captured my imagination.
Since then, the Roar has been toned down and has lost its edge.
I want it to be dangerous again and with a sense of urgency.

  • No it should be deleted if anything 😀

  • Yes the roar needs an update, i remember when it first came and i was so amazed....i still love it but people are rarely there because of the volcanos.
I on the other hand still love it, nice visually and with higher stakes and even higher the profits.

  • @jg13-gamer Especially now that we're back to 6 ship servers, they need to turn off the volcano at Morrow's and make it a spawn point; albeit a lower chance spawn.

Add (fire impervious) animals to the islands and it is suddenly as viable an environment as any other.

  • @jg13-gamer said in The Devils Roar. Should it get a update:

What would you do to improve on it?

No more lava. Now the lava flows are hot fudge and the volcanoes shoot scoops of ice cream!

Add some marshmallow trees and honey graham rocks, then change the name to "The Devil's S'more".

  • Make the volcanic rocks do less damage or scale with ship size, and not target players and ships, make them truly random.

Volcano eruptions aren't a challenge, they're a binary toggle that turns the fun off. If one is erupting near you, there isn't a thought of "But if I do this, I can overcome the situation", you have to babysit your ship and leave as soon as possible. I've had pvp battles come to a total halt by an eruption, with both of our ships being hit and going minutes in cannon range without firing a shot because we're both stuck managing our ships.

Put the challenge elsewhere, have Ashen Skeletons immune to fire damage and move faster when burning, igniting themselves when on an erupting island or something. Currently if you need to go to an island that's erupting, it might as well have a "Fun's Closed" sign on it.

  • I'd like to see an island adapted or added that's akin to Thieves Haven - where I can safely hide my ship IN a volcano.

As the one known “safe spot” from volcanoes, it could be a hotly contended spot.

It could operate as a haven out of which to run Ashen Athena missions.

You could also increase the probably of the box of wonderous secrets or give us some more lore around that...

  • I think it was the first ashen key and ashen chest voyages gathering tomes on and between tiny islands in the roar that we liked a lot.
We played it over and over again those where nice short voyages with fun loot to hoard.

If there are fun voyages on small island we love to go there.

  • It definitely should at least be updated with the new voyages and events. It’s such a cool area with a lot of potential. I wish they’d use it more

  • Make the volcanoes op again lol.

You can get Salvage and GHVaults from Morrow's Peak. There is not currently a ghost fleet OoS DR variation. I don't think Flameheart, the new lords or the new Super Fort spawn in the Roar either.

  • It's good as the harder PvE area.
The volcanoes are totally avoidable if you keep your guard up for rumbles and smoke and keep the ship prepped for a quick getaway.
Instead of being on the lookout for sails you are watching for the volcanoes.

I wish it was nicer on the eyes though. Nicer water and more clear sky. Feels a bit depressing.

  • @joelmuzz

    It's spoopy

  • I'll throw my hat in and say the Devil's Roar (and The Wild while we're at it) should stay as is.

There's nothing wrong with the environment or the voyages, and the lack of activity in this area is only because of the major influx of gold elsewhere.

And it's only because other gold-earning-activities and the like that the roar is emptier now than it's ever been.

On the topic of changing the geography, we really could start with the deletion of all these triangular tall-tale monoliths that are littered everywhere and have now confused many navigators who were able to easily move around the sea of thieves by simple sight navigation before.

If there were possibly too many rocks coming out of the water before, there are certainly too many now.
