Welp, it finally happened...

  • I have sailed the Sea of Thieves since before the beginning, have amassed a fortune, survived many adventures, cast away the lives of numerous others, and completed everyth...

Well, that is until now. You see, I have prided myself on completing every single time-limited event and commendation. That ended today.

And you know what? I have you to blame. No, not Rare; you - the community. You call yourselves pirates, yet you couldn't bring yourself to steal my gifts or even take them from me when I offered them freely. When you did take them, you refused to turn them in, despite being worth dubloons. I sat for hours each day with a Reaper's Mark and even braved the Reaper's Chest to entice you to come to the Reaper's Hideout, but you did not come. Even with a treasure trove to go along with it, I was still left to my lonesome.

Pirates? Please... You're not even worth being called thieves!

    You have disappointed me. Greatly.

If you are unlucky enough to have a gift-giver tattoo and are not a member of my crew, I will vanquish you on the spot simply out of spite for what you have and that which I do not.

    You have been warned.

    Happy sailing! 😈

  • @galactic-geek lifes a beach

  • I'm feeling this. I will help hunt those with the mark.

  • opens vanity chest puts away giver of gifts title 👀🏃‍♂️

Honestly never thought this would be so difficult to achieve.. I just put them all on a rowboat and did a drive by and dropped it off right infornt of ships 🤣

  • I don't think that the gift update was well received.

I found it difficult to find people to turn the gifts in too. I've had 3-4 hour play sessions where the first thing I did was drop off gifts for people to turn in. People didn't care.

I did get the achievement, but I guess I was lucky enough to find the right people at the right time.

Another hard commendation that was like this one is the Arena commendation for getting players to raise a grog in the hot tub and play an instrument on the stage. It was painful to actually get these ones done as most people were either AFK or they just didn't care..

  • @galactic-geek

Yea...I turned all mine in lol but gifting to others? Nope...I tried...I dropped off rowboats, left them on the table, physically handed them to people...nope. either I didnt get credit or they never turned em in. Either way I'm in the same boat!

  • Ye'h... I only had one person came up to me and give me gifts to turn in for him and I did. It sucks. Trying to find someone to turn them in... Personally, I found a trick around the problem and made some progress. Obvious doesn't matter now but what I did once to get some progress was do a Fort with a bunch of people and get into the treasure room. While everyone else is picking up chests, I picked up all of the gifts and put them outside in front and ask "Hey, someone wants to take the gifts? I'll be taking the emeralds over to the Hunter's for all of us, so someone else has to take the gifts." (we were all in an Alliance).

Safe to say... I got progress because I was the first pirate to pick up the gifts, so they counted as mine.

  • Yup.
But you can also blame Rare for the lack of "Marketing" the event. A lot, A LOT of pirates didnt even know what the event was or gifts were for. Finding them on outposts laying near tents or just floating where a ship sunk.

I can tell you, me and my crewmate only got our week before the event ended, we tried every trick in the book. Reapers Mark flag, fish on reapers hideout, travel to nearby pirate ships and speak with them.

One day we were lucky enough to "borrow" a random pirates ship as they left and have one crew mate join it. Thus...it was easy.

But yeah...community wasn't good on this. If the reward was better.

Hey, man. If you ever want to sail with us, let me know. We grinded out gifts and we're pretty awesome at getting stuff done. We seem to agree on most stuff around here.

  • Wait. Did I miss something? What tattoo, @Galactic-Geek?

  • Clearly I need to wear my “Giver of Gifts” title until I manage to get the Shrouded Ghost one. It’s obviously almost as rare.

I got lucky, including getting into a multi-ship alliance that took over a server early on. But it was hard work to get finished.

  • I did it a little differently. I collected the gifts until I had enough to get the comendation, went to Reaper's Hideout, accessed the xbox menu where I see recent players and sent MP to each one saying that I had gifts to sell and I wanted the comendaion. It didn't take more than 15 minutes to a player to come to me, form an alliance, sell gifts and we both won.

  • @galactic-geek Wasn't it just the title "Giver of Gifts"that was time limited? (i still see it in the reputation tab currently)

You can obtain "The Gift Givers Tattoo" from Umbra now, at least i think so as i have it but never even got close to having any of the past gift commendations done.

I did this too and all I got in response were crickets...

  • @galactic-geek I'm sorry sir. This one was a debacle to say the least.

well if I can join ye on the seas (I've added you on Xbox) and I still have my gift voyages to help you with

  • @galactic-geek Try again... right next to the masked stranger (why are we still calling her that?) It's double doubloons for gifts for the next month and people will definitely be going to the hideout to turn in loot.

  • @galactic-geek I tried finding others to trade with and if I had found some I would have contacted you, but I too could not find anyone that wanted the gifts, they just wanted to kos.

As for this update, I did get it done, but only because I was highly active the first 3 days. It seems that these kinds of updates where cooperation between crews is required only lasts a week at most before pirates go back to what they were doing before the update.

I don't need the doubloons, but if someone approached me and asked me to turn them in, I tried to help out, knowing how difficult it was to get someone to help.

I do think that a lot of people got burned out quickly with this one. Each item had little perceived value, and were only worth while when you had large quantities. But large quantities are a pain in the but to turn in at reapers hideout. Heck, large quantities to turn in are a pain no matter where you go.

well sir we still don't know her name or it's Wanda and the devs don't want us to know that

  • @closinghare208 If it's not Wanda, I'll eat my hat - it's getting incredibly easy to get ahead of the lore right now. It's like a bad B-Movie at the moment.

Goes to vanity chest and thinksbiver to change from Hunter of the Shrouded Ghost to Giver of Gifts 🤔

A FotD crew we sunk in the end helped us to get the last gifts selled.
We made several Alliances and asked others before and during xmas and all went good.
    I feel for you.

Me missing some bosses and 40 FotD to have all completed since day 1.

But i can assure you i will miss the entire July this year for travel and festival Business.
I will get over it - eventually 😂

  • I’ll chime in and say this was the least exciting event to me. I also barely played due to my job during the entire month of December. I really hope their next event for the holidays is better than this.

And bring back the holiday themed music in the tavern!!!

Dude I was heading to the RH the other day because a reapers ship was just sitting there. I was hoping someone like you were there with gifts. On the way there the reaper ship just disappeared! I was sad. I'm not kidding!

  • It sure was a grind but I'm glad I managed to get it done.

Only really bad day I had was the one where I spent two and a half hours on RH waiting for someone to come by. After about an hour I nearly sailed away but then remembered the server merges. In hindsight, I should have just loaded them back on the ship. Eventually, I gave up, sold them all (despite not needing to) and went to North Star to sell some fish I had caught while waiting. I looked back at the island and... yep... there was a ship had just arrived. facepalm

  • We found what appeared to be new players, enticed them with free loot and doubloons. Worked twice. But we all were exhausted with this update. I still need two stolen rag and bones. Found two randomly on beaches and hoped they would count but they don't. Still have 2 bones voyages sitting in my inventory for when that special moment happens.

  • IMO Rare did not really think this one through.

As many have already stated on this post, I suffered the same frustration. You couldn't even give gifts away, the only thing you got was blunder to the face and the gifts would just sit.

I was able to complete the self turn-in commendations, but not the 'give a gift'. So frustrating!!!

  • @lord-szarvas said in Welp, it finally happened...:

I don't think that the gift update was well received.

I found it difficult to find people to turn the gifts in too. I've had 3-4 hour play sessions where the first thing I did was drop off gifts for people to turn in. People didn't care.

Any commendation that requires other people to get done is going to be extremely difficult to complete after the first few days which is why I cringe when people suggest events that "require the whole server to complete". Please god no.

I got lucky and was able to find another crew to turn a large bulk of mine in (and they had no idea about the event or what to do so I walked them through it and explained), and a few got turned in after being left at her feet randomly while I did other things.

  • Yea this gift giving event was a total nightmare I didn't finish it all until the last week and I had to park island and wait hours just to have someone show up to hand in the gifts while trying to kill me at the same time.
I knew right from the start that it was going to be a hair puller of an event.

Well I'm off to get my tattoo set 😁

  • For me it was the same thing. I've tried in many ways to get cooperation to get the commendation and title, but after the first week was over it seemed like no one was interested in this anymore. I checked again one week later and it still was silent at the RH. After that I quickly went back to the regular stuff I do as a pirate. Sailing, fishing and looting :)

  • @galactic-geek

We forced people to sell ours...
We came to people (who didn't welcome us) and we responded to their attacks, killing them and hijacking their ships to Reaper's Hiddout. Most of the time they realized we only wanted to offer Doubloons mid-way there.... It was fun tho.

    However,
I felt the same lack of knowledge around the event and how to do it.

It's not that Rare is doing something wrong, players simple don't care about knowing about stuff... They login, they play for a bit and left. It's a casual gaming sessions. Most people do not drop them selves in the medias and communities to get news about monthly events.

We do, but we Love and live the game and the community, this one.

I also play another games that I don't care about community and dive into news and stuff...

  • @nunoazuldimeter
That's how I gave a lot of my gifts as well. :D We really had to force the issue.
I will say this - we never had a session where we had gifts and didn't get anyone to turn them in.
I sailed in a galleon, tracked down other ships, and offered our gifts. Most of the time, we found new, unexperienced players, and escorted them to the Reaper's Hideout - one way or the other.

It was definitely something not worth doing passively. It was more like door-to-door sales, lol - Pirate style. "Arrr, would ya be interested in FREE GIFTS worth DOUBLOONS!! Aye, we not be aceptin NO as an answerr, so just be on yer way with us to the hideout, or we be forcin ya to do so. Happy Festival of Givin'!!! Yarrr!" :oP

In the end, each and every crew we did this with grew to enjoy the experience and had fun with us though.

Also, @Galactic-Geek while these pirates may not have taken your free loot... they robbed yee of the real treasure you were seeking. :/

Yeah, I don't know how I would have done with this commendation if I was solo slooping (which I used to do all the time). Doing this with a galleon crew was definitely easier. Most sloops are rather glad when we pull up to them (or board and anchor them) only to find out we don't want to sink them and actually are glad to give them stuff (and an alliance for all our other treasure, if they're nice enough).

  • We had a few instances where we had to force people to take our gifts and turn them in.

After trying to be diplomatic in every instance, even offering loot as payment, we were often met with zero communication and either hostility or cowardice. We were left with no alternatives but to take control of their ships and get them to respond in some way or another view GameChat, Messages, or Hop Up/Down for Yes/No. The other crews, being our captives, were left with 2 choices: turn in our gifts and be left in peace with their ship and loot, or we strip their ship of everything and sink them.

It got the job done pretty quick, but I know this isn't an option for everyone.
