Revised: thoughts on private servers

  • I have no problem against private servers nor is this a post saying they shouldn’t add them. I also never said they weren’t going to add them one day, but I hope they would be very considerate of their entire player base when they do. Not only would people jump on a private server by themselves just to avoid people they would exploit it to advance their progression or make it easier. My biggest worry is that it will kill adventure mode. Seas will be even emptier forcing player to try and get into a private server or play alone with no threats of enemies. If someone were to get on a private server it wouldn’t play the same if you killed someone and stole treasure you would never be invited again.

I believe some of these points can help keep people in adventure mode and would be a good balance with private lobbies.

    1. name it sea of friends under the menu selection. It’s a funny inside joke and quite literally it would be a sea of friends on a private server.

    2. make all player names pink brown or any other color so there is no confusion if video or screen cap what version they are playing edit: a visual representation on screen that it is not adventure mode. With people streaming and creating content we wouldn’t want people lying what mode they are playing trying to make it look like adventure mode.

    3. any cosmetic obtained in Private lobby should not be transferable to adventure or arena, no monthly events unless they don’t count towards adventure, and finally no progression. everything can be exploited due to private server grinding.

    4. One other cool suggestion would be the option for mods on private server only.

going into private lobby’s on first person shooters doesn’t effect your online level/ rank why should it on here.

    please note any other suggestion

Edit: Entire post has been edited in a more serious manor since the jokes before were taken as saltiness or trolling. Note I did not eliminate all the jokes.

  • @piratecraggy i did say any other color lol

    Aye.. yet Pink is mentioned...lol

  • @piratecraggy how about brown? i like brown better lol

  • @andyxxpanda1290

Brown is cool... nothing wrong with Brown :)

    edit:
equally I'm not saying anything is wrong with pink :)

  • @andyxxpanda1290 I'm all for this. Adventure retains it's risk/reward value and those who would rather have an easier/calmer/sillier session will have a mode to do that undisturbed.

    Everyone's a winner.

  • Anything that can contribute to Pirate movies magic.

lol... it's important to sort out the small things first... then the rest just falls into place. Kudos!

  • I think the names should be in yellow.

  • @inboundbomb any color works :) lol

  • @andyxxpanda1290 Canary yellow then? Just to be specific.

  • @inboundbomb ;)

A Little bit brighter. Gotta see those names across the map at night.

  • Why not JUST make it tied to a character that can only play the mode you chose for it? I don't see why white names or events should be a problem if you'll never be able to transfer anything to adventure and naming it sea of friends really just makes you sound salty imo because thats the name people usually use to cry on forums about it.

  • @andyxxpanda1290
I'd say don't call it sea of friends, and don't have any progression at all. No tall tales or events either. They could then make world edit tools for that mode(they probably wouldn't though sadly).

  • I hadn’t realised Rare needed player permission to do stuff.

OK, Rare you can do what you want re private servers and I really don’t care how much gold or XP people can earn on them.

It makes no difference to me.

  • @dadiodude didn’t say they needed my permission. Rare has already stated in a dev upstream they want that risk of player interaction. I back rates statement.

In my opinion based off everything that has been said there probably will be a private server. Also based off of everything that has been said there probably won’t be progression. Edit: or some way to abuse full alliance grinding.

  • @konkydonk the sea of friends was mainly a joke but it would honestly work for private server. Not salty at all lol. As far as the coloring of gamertag it’s mainly to distinguish between adventure and private server for purpose of making screen caps or videos. Some players make share content stating its adventure when it’s not.

It's not salty, it's just replacing thieves with friends as it is more accurate. There's no thieving in private servers.

  • @andyxxpanda1290
They stated that they do want private servers to mess around in in the future. They also said they don't like the idea of grind servers

  • @blazedrake100 that’s what I said wasn’t it? Maybe I worded it wrong. The big issue is the grind servers for sure. No element of danger. No challenge.

I thought that was what those Twitch servers were showing in Arena. Lol

Makes sense I guess and again it just made it seem like salt because so many people naming it SoF really sound like they are personally offended by the pure thought of private servers lol

  • @konkydonk I think Sea of Friends fits, if that gamemode ever comes..
Dead By Daylight has "Survive with Friends"/"Kill Your Friends". Which is similiar.

And there wouldn't be much thieving going on over at the Sea of Friends.. So it fits and describes what it is.

If they add progression in the private server everyone will be doing missions there risk free, adventure mode will be only filled with grieffers killing new players convincing them to go in private mode. Effectively killing the spirit of the game...

Elite dangerous has that system and no one goes in open anymore, devs are removing activities from the private mode to force people back into open. It's a huge issue in that game having private servers.

  • If people want to pay for server hosting to be able to play by themselves or with a group of friends, then I don't think it matters if they can progress or not.

I just think that a lot of people that want to have a single player or PvE experience are also the same people who are not going to want to pay what it will cost to rent an Azure instance for casual play.

There could be thieving in private servers. Many here do not understand what private server alternative to games are or could be. No reason a private server could not be played exactly like the game is now.

By the way what trolling with the original post and lots of these replies. Not to mention belittling and making fun of other players and how they play and the types of requests they make.

My post was rather tongue in cheek as I’m sure you realise.

But you raise a very interesting and extremely important point. If you are sure there’ll be a mass exodus from Adventure in favour of servers running essentially exactly the same game but without PvP then doesn’t Rare have one doozey of a problem.

It would mean that the overwhelming majority of players just don’t like the game as it is and much prefer a more conventional co-op experience.

Now, if you’re correct and this genuinely affects the majority to the point where all Adventure is left with are the griefers then patently something needs done.

On a purely commercial level Rare would be obliged to follow the dollars, they’re a business, they just have to.

So, if you’re right, what’s to be done?
Do the masses get their PvE servers or, does Rare try to rework the game to broaden appeal by improving the PvP experience and remove the constant cry for an alternate game mode.

It all depends on what a private server would look like. Same game run privately like Conan Exiles, Ark, Day Z, etc. is what I think private server would be for Sea of Thieves. Sea of Thieves performance issues may have an impact of such instances.

  • Sea of Adventure Time!!!!

  • Play on a alliance server and you will have the same experience!

Umm yes let me just play with my friends and steal their 2h worth of grind cus I'm a PiRaTe. Like, no it really wouldn't work in a private server. Sea of Friends not thieves, simple nothing less nothing more.
