kraken tentacle placement

  • okay so I had a bit of a problem playing a tall tale earlier where the kraken showed up and sunk me. I saw allot of toxicity over this a la dark souls style "git gud!" on the forums but I thought this was a bit unfair. usually I have no problem with the kraken but this time it gripped the boat with it's tentacle right over the stairs to the lower deck of my brig. my friend and I physically couldn't do anything to repair/bail/or hide and then we both got sucked up by another tentacle. needless to say we sunk in seconds and lost the parts necessary to finish the damned tall tale. shouldn't the tentacle be unable to cover the only entrance to the lower deck? isn't that kind of BALDERDASH??

Not really. First, this is an intended thing the Kraken does. This is to give incentive for crews to remove the grapple post haste. Second, its quite easily countered. Whenever you face the Kraken have someone in a position to repair. If and when this type of grapple happens, they are sealed within, thus, being able to repair holes as soon as they pop up. Don't need to worry about bucketing, because if you are patching immediately when holes pop up, hardly any water should accumulate.

This still remains a case of, "Git Gud," but in the sense that its quite possible to deal with through player effort. Without the need to demand changes from the developer to make an already easy encounter more easy.

  • Anytime you sail with one less you are leaving yourself short handed. My regular crew is three and we sail on a brig. It is always someone's job to stay below decks and repair vs kraken, meg, or skellie ship. Reason being what you just stated above. We learned the hard way and now you can take that lesson and go forward. Video games aren't supposed to be super easy. Where is the fun in that?

What you call toxicity is just us being truthful to whoever makes posts like these.

    1. You tried to 2 man a brig because for some reason players love to believe you can 2 man a brig just as effectively as a 2man sloop. False but whatever.

    2. You and your crewmate were above deck. You are suppose to always have 1 on repair.

    3. Always have cannons in your inventory. You got 4 left? Run down and grab a full set. You attacked a tentacle and it went under dead/not dead, get run down and grab a full set. You aren't suppose to wait till you run out.

This game revolves around being observant of your surroundings and what is happening. You have to pay attention to everything and you have to understand what is about to happen or what is happening.

The funny thing is that you can go the WHOLE Kraken event without getting wrapped a SINGLE time if you do it right.

My crew and I do it all the time. Hell, I even take the Kraken out in less than a minute when I solo.

The kraken wrapping the stairs is not unfair. Its fair because you need to be scared of the kraken, you should be scared of the kraken. You either know what to do or you don't and should take a moment to look at everything that is happening when it attacks you. You know instead of freaking out, running around all over the place, shooting at everything and anything while screaming at each other.

SIDE NOTE I also want to point something out that honestly erked me. When they released the hunters call, I was SO FREAKING FRUSTRATED with the community. I solo a lot of the times and I run into the Kraken a lot of the times. Solo sloops used to have to kill 4 tentacles to kill the Kraken, OOOH NOOO the kraken is too hard though so they nerfed it to 2.

It took so much longer for me to finish that god awful Kraken Meat commendation just because they nerfed the Kraken. I could have gotten 4 peices of meat instead of this mediocre 2. Not to mention I used to get SO MUCH BETTER LOOT with 4 tentacles. A bunch of new and rookie players whined and cried about something that did not even need changing.

I'm sorry, I didn't know that my bad

  • @redrob96 I've always thought it was stupid that it can wrap the stairs but I'm in the minority.

It's easy to deal with if you are on a sloop & have a rowboat. Just detach the rowboat at the start of the fight and make sure your sails are up. You can jump overboard and use your rowboat to get below deck.

Best advice is to make sure that you have one person below deck and one above and you always keep enough cannonballs to clear a wrapped tentacle. If you have a cannon-ball crate, keep it above deck near the cannons and you don't have to worry about that as much.

  • @xultanis-dragon wow ya'll get mad quickly.

I'm not complaining I'm just asking so please calm down.

"The funny thing is that you can go the WHOLE Kraken event without getting wrapped a SINGLE time if you do it right." okay, how? you just kind of brushed over this can you inform me how I can avoid getting grabbed because I didn't know that you could.
and I'm not new or a rookie, I've been a pirate legend for a few months, I've had this game since launch. I'm not whining or crying, I'm just trying to figure out if this is something I can actively combat or avoid somehow

  • @redrob96 I think the basic strategy is to kill it before it does. That's the only way.

  • @xcalypt0x seems like it, I'm not usually the aggressive sort but I suppose I'll have to start being a little crueler to the krakens - poor beasts

    1. You and your crewmate were above deck. You are suppose to always have 1 on repair.

It is actually a good strategy. Be aggressive but avoid getting sucked off the ship. You want to target 1 tentacle at a time rain terror on it. If you take too long they start going under water and become hard to track.

  • @xcalypt0x is there a way to stop yourself from being sucked off the ship?
(other than hiding below decks as well.. you know)

  • @redrob96 People claim you can shoot the tentacle that's sucking to stop it. I have had this work a few times but have also still been sucked off the ship. If I am solo, I just hide below. If I have people in my crew I will try it.

  • @xcalypt0x good a suggestion as any, thank you. you're a gentleman and a scholar, and I appreciate the advice, I'll try it next time too.

This works for me, however I want to emphasize that you have to hit the offending tentacle directly in the face-mouth. 3 direct shots has always stopped it from sucking when I faced it. hitting anywhere else does damage, but will not stop it from sucking.

  • @redrob96 said in kraken tentacle placement:

this time it gripped the boat with it's tentacle right over the stairs to the lower deck of my brig.

When a tentacle wraps around your boat, the face-mouth will hang out very closeby. as soon as it wraps, watch for a tentacle to surface very close to the boat. This is the tentacle that's wrapping you up. Hit it once with a cannonball and it'll submerge, then pop up on the other side. Then hit it twice with cannonballs and it'll submerge and fully let go of your ship.

  • @redrob96 The brig is the quickest to sink. As stated earlier, as soon as you realize the Kraken is attacked no, one of you needs to stay below deck and repair, this will buy you a lot more time. When it wraps, DO NOT START HACKING AWAY AT THE TENTACLE. There will be a different looking tentacle very close to one side or the other poking out of the sea. Hit that one a couple of times with cannons and it will let go very quickly. They have already nerfed the heck out of this thing. Let’s not encourage it further.

EDIT: @BactaTankBill beat me to it or I didn’t read far enough down to see their post.

Does it have to be with cannon or do guns work as well?

Killer migraine, wheening off caffeine so I'll make this quick.

    For you and @xCALYPT0x

Guns and swords don't really work anymore.

To stop the Kraken from wrapping you, you have to shoot the tentacle before it wraps you.

Basically there is a tentacle that appears right next to your boat, it roars at you, then goes under water, then wraps you.

You have to hit this tentacle at least once. If you hit it, no tentacle wrap.

@xCALYPT0x I could have sworn you made a how to video like I did so I'm surprised you didn't know this....I could be thinking of someone else.

    @RedRob96

Also wasn't angry. Just direct with you. I'm not going to be gentle with you because 1, you didnt ask for advice, 2 you made a ranty post, 3 at the end of the post you wanted the kraken changed because it was too hard for you.

You want to make a ranty post thats fine. We've all been there and we all need to vent from time to time.

Instead of asking for a nerf on the Kraken you could have done a search for guides or videos. There have been tons of posts about the Kraken. Lots of youtube vids on how to.

You say you aren't a rookie but you obviously play like one. Learn to observe what happens around you when you encounter a boss. With your supposed game time, I'm surprised you never realized any of the nuances from the Kraken. You must have ran into her a lot, so you either just ran way from the get go, or just never really paid attention to what was going on.

Pay attention. Best advice I could give.

  • @redrob96 Why should there never be a danger of loosing. You can kill the beast, you can run away, you can learn how to handle it. Meanwhile, you may get sunk, here and then. What gives, this is a dangerous sea. At least it should be.

  • The same happened to me a few weeks ago. On a bigger issue when will the game get fixed so I don't spend an 3 hours trying to log on on Xbox

  • @redrob96 there’s a tactic. Raise sail. Do a full 180 turn. Sail out. It’s on YouTube. With this tactic you can get out without taking any damage. Every now and then if you don’t execute it properly you get wrapped or attacked.

  • @redrob96 Annoying as it is, we've all had this sort of @£$% happen to us but I bet you won't leave no-one downstair again... Personally I do agree that any scenario that ends up in a no option sink is a bit flawed, there should always be a way out.

Something me crew and I were discussing would be the ability to open the extra deck hatch on all ships and be able to drop through. It would open up more options for boarders and scenarios like kraken wraps and would generally be kinda cool.

  • If you're caught beneath the tentacle as it wraps over the stairs and traps you, you can still make repairs like normal and bail water THROUGH the tentacle.

If you're trapped on the top deck and can't get below, simply shoot the tentacle nearest to the boat to get the kraken to remove its slimy grip. If any tentacle is trying to swallow you up, SHOOT THAT ONE FIRST since you might not be able to do anything once swallowed. If you do get swallowed, you can either shoot or slash the tentacle holding you, or have your friend harpoon you back to the ship - not easy, but definitely doable.

Between the 2 of you (should've been 3 if you were on a brig - I'm a big proponent of playing to your ship-size), you should have had plenty of cannonballs and bullets to deal with this.

As they say, "better luck next time."

  • @xultanis-dragon Yep, I did. That's just one tid bit I did not know.

Don't listen to the hate, I agree with you, getting caught in a unlucky tactic that the kraken doesn't always do is not a 'git gud' mechanic, it's a BS mechanic that should be fixed. You're average SOT player would not know you can throw water out of a solid object and having to stay below deck full time for something that "might" happen keeping you from helping your crew or you lose your ship is a stupid game play mechanic.

  • @zormis There has been no hate in this thread. Just advice and disagreement. It is not a no win situation. There is a solution when it occurs. Reread the advice in this thread to know what to do.

  • @zormis

Lets talk about a the Kraken.

Everything the Kraken does is not a BS mechanic. Its the responsibility of the player to learn the game and the mechanics of the game. It is also the responsibility of the player to pay attention to their surroundings and how mobs and boss' react.

Just observing you know that the skeletons who have guns will either run to the side or towards you when you break their line of site.

Same thing with the Kraken. Except no one takes the time to pay attention.

Kraken spawns and immediately most crews freak out, "KRAKEN, GET READY FOR HARD ANCHOR TURN!!" or "KRAKEN LETS GET OUT OF HERE!!"

For the ones who actually FIGHT the kraken they go through the motions.

Everyone gets on cannons and starts shooting and anything they have an angle too. Ignoring that they could shoot the SAME tentacle and kill it in 10 seconds. Most crews I've worked with shoot different tentacles, its mind boggling.

When the Kraken hits a ship and creates a hole, sometimes no one goes to repair because they think someone else is going to handle it. Sometimes you actually get someone that runs down to repair. However then and ONLY then do you have someone on repairs. If you fought the Kraken and were "gud" at it, you would have had someone on repairs before it popped holes on your ship.

Again lots of this you would learn just from taking a moment and freaking out the Kraken when you run into her instead of just freaking out over your loot that you may or may not lose.

We are all gamers. We've all been through this song and dance. Learn the tells of the boss for when they are about to do certain attacks and learn the pattern. We've all seem to forget how to do that in this game.

    Average SoT crew -

Panic - runs around - shoots cannons - doesn't know who is on repair - barely any communications

You aforementioned "git gud" crew -

Captain called out orders - Someone is already below deck handling holes the INSTANT they happen - Everyone communicates - Crew targets the same tentacle - If a tentacle is sucking someone up they change targets to that tentacle while the person getting sucked up goes below deck.

SIDE NOTE When my crew run into a Kraken. We actually have players OFF the boat getting the loot while the Kraken is attacking us. The Kraken is so easy its silly. Yes even on a Brig.

This is me trying to solo a kraken in a brig. I almost killed it, 1 more tentacle and it would have died. If I could do this good SOLO, you shouldn't have any problems with a crew.

I forgot to mention I'm talking to a friend on party chat. I never realized I didn't mention that in the description lol. I look like some crazy guy talking to myself. But there was a friend.....THERE WAS.

I disagree. There shouldn't be a random mechanic that pretty much causes you to sink without anyway of fixing your situation. If someone is on repairs and they pop out just for a second and in that second you get wrapped and unable to get back down and repair in time, it is not a skilled situation. It's a dumb luck silly mechanic situation.

The kraken in the old days you could smack the tentacle down and without noticed the mechanic was changed. It rarely happens on the galleon, it can't happen on the sloop but it tends to happen on the brig a lot, that in itself is silly.

I never argued the karken was hard, I am Athena 10 and killed it more times than I can count, pointing out a bs mechanic does not mean it's hard it means it's a poor design. As someone who has played MMOs for over 20 years and in top raid guilds I know bad mechanics when I see them.

So you make a mistake and the game is at fault for it??

If you go to the top deck and you get locked out of the stairs then make sure you get it to unwrap before you sink.

I just showed linked you a video of me solo'ing the Kraken. I got the tentacle off before I sank.

I'm sorry buts its not a silly mechanic. Its a mechanic that punishes people who can kill the Kraken.

I've also played MMO's for over twenty years. So what? You call it a bad mechanic, I call it a good one.

There are ways to get the tentacle off the boat. You get sunk its your own fault.

The game doesn't have to hold your hand so you can get out of every situation you put yourself in. Theres a way to win. Make the right choices and you win.

Leave the bottom deck for no reason at all and get locked out, well better make sure you have some cannon balls on hand to get the tentacle off the boat, if you didn't guess what, you made another mistake.

  • @xultanis-dragon Again, one simple mistake shouldn't cause you to get in a situation that causes you to sink as you stand helplessly around. That's a bad mechanic, especially for newer players. If they made it so you can slice the tentacle off that would fix the problem.

Sorry we will just disagree, and it shouldn't be more prone to happen 1 out of 3 vessels.
