Shark Spawn Consistency

  • To preface this so you guys who enjoy giving members flak for their opinions, this is neither a demand or a complaint, it is a mere suggestion as well as feedback about what I’ve grasped about the game itself

Can we perhaps have more consistent shark spawns?

Like literally you could jump in the water to get onto an island you just docked near and not even five seconds later a shark is up in your face, or you could do a drive by to drop off an Athena’s and you didn’t realize how far the outpost actually was, and take about 4 minutes to get there and not a single shark spawns.

Not only does it defeat the purpose of keeping pirates out of the water for too long (I had heard from someone that that’s what the intentions of the shark being in the game were), but it provides unfair advantage to people who park their ships far from where another ship is docked, and swim to them with a keg in their hands (making them even slower and thus making them take more time in getting to the other ship), or even just swim to their ship just to kill them. (And no, I’m not talking about people who use rowboats - I’m talking people who literally don’t have one and just wanna wreak havoc and will literally swim for 5+ minutes just to keg someone)

I’ve been able to do this myself where I swim long long distances to keg a ship (only hostile ones who fired first mind you), and I’m realizing “.... where are the sharks?”

I’m unsure how many people will agree with me, but I feel that the shark spawns should become more consistent so then pirates actually have a reason to fear being in the water for too long of a time.

If u knew the timing things would be predictable. I like the randomness

  • I mean, I noticed that sharks are usually hanging around shipwrecks or whenever there is combat.
Not sure how much of this is actually real or if it's just my mind playing tricks.

I used to be a man of SCIENCE! But no more.

Maybe another dedicated person could do experiments or share their results ?

  • I don't know about consistency, necessarily, as I very much enjoy the randomness and chaos of these seas. However, I'd like to see an increase in shark population and shark appearances.

There was an amazing stretch (of two weeks, I think) right before the Hungering Deep update where they increased the shark spawns by an enormous amount. It was CRAZY and a bit overkill (intentionally), but I loved it, hehe. While, obviously, that amount of an increase wouldn't be right - I do think a bit more of danger within the water would do good things for the game, overall. We'd get plenty of complaints from PvP-focused players unhappy with having to consistently deal with so many sharks - but the game is multi-faceted and no single focus is safe. :D

    Fair enough!

  • @electricknights

Exactly!’ That’s an amazing way of looking at it!!

  • @ironuzuka

They’re around shipwrecks cuz you’re under the water a lot?

And it’s kinda cliche that sharks are where battles are, so they can feed on any poor pirate who is knocked off their ship... they hunger for blood.

Oh, yeah, that was awesome. All you had to do was tap the water, and three, four, five sharks came along - very hungry sharks.

I don't like the idea of making sharks predictable. They should remain accidental.

  • If i remember correctly Mike Chapman once mentioned that Shark spawns vary from Grid to Grid - meaning some regions in the Sea of Thieves have higher Shark populations and others have lower populations.

  • Maybe for random events upping the spawn but I like how it is now. It keeps you on your toes and surprised. I also like to swim from island to island and pull some sneaky maneuvers. Adding more would stop that.

  • @thor-von-blitz

    That actually explains a lot!!!

  • They shouldn’t be predictable, however there should be some areas with a higher population just as you’d expect in the real world.

But, fins. We don’t get fins and in a shark infested area we should.

I think sharks should only spawn when there is blood in the water, e.g. when a player is missing health, or during a meg attack. Sharks have been a great ally in defending my ship and also my worst enemies when trying to sneak onto a ship.
